“Hey, Bella,” Said Edward, “You told me that you ate dirt once. Mind telling that story to me?”

I grimaced. I wondered if it would be all right if I told him the story of brave Bella, the dirt eater. I tried my best to remember everything from that day.

“ I dare you to Jump off the 3rd grade swing!” I said.

He yelled back a determined, “Fine!”

He snuck into the third graders recess yard, looking around carefully. We weren’t allowed in there, because the slides, swings, and jungle gyms were too dangerous for us 1st graders.

They were all a beautiful shiny metal. They sat glinting red in the Arizona sun. The swing was the most beautiful of them all, because it was new.

He walked carefully to the swing, and climbed onto it. His feet dangled about a foot or two off the ground. He got it going, somehow, and not before long he was going very fast.

Taking a deep breath he jumped off in a beautiful arch. His hair was rustling with the fall. His face was filled with a giant smile of glee. He landed on his legs, looking triumphant.

“Okay Bella Swan,” He said, “I dare you to eat a handful of dirt!”

“Why would I do that? “ I snapped back at him.

“I double dog dare you,” He said, “unless you’re just a chicken.”

The children all laughed. I felt so embarrassed. Besides, no one ever said no to a double dog dare.

“Okay,” I agreed.

I walked over to a little patch of mud, and knelt down. Slowly, I reached out and grabbed a fistful of dirt. I sat looking at it for a long time, or so it seemed. It was reddish brown, and had bits of grass in it.

I knew I had to eat it or I would be a chicken. I quickly shoved it all into my mouth and started to swallow it. It tasted like sandy Styrofoam bits. Though the taste of the dirt, overall, was not that horrible.

“HA!” I yelled in his face, “Bella Swan isn’t afraid of anything!”

I had just come back to reality.

“No,” I told him, “I’m just going to keep it to myself, so you don’t laugh at me.”

He looked at me, his eyes smoldering. I knew I couldn’t hold out for much longer when he was dazzling me like this.

“Please,” He begged, “please tell me, I promise not to tell anyone.”

“No.” I stated

“Please?” He stared at me with those eyes again.

“Fine, but you’ve got to promise me you’re not going to laugh.” I said.

He nodded, and I went told him about that, trying to cut off the finer points and details. Halfway through the story he was shaking, and looked like he was about to burst.

After I finished, though, I heard lots of giggling and a loud, booming laugh from down the hall. I ripped the door open, and stared down the hall.

Emmett, Jasper, and Alice were sitting there, laughing. I was furious. Jasper seemed to notice at once, because he shut up. Alice followed his example. Emmett didn’t shut up though.

“What?” He laughed, “It was a funny story.”
