“It’s an old hospital. Very small, but it’s where the Volturi would NEVER go.” Jane says.
“A hospital?” asks Edward. I can see the concern in his eyes.
“Yes, the small family of vampires that are their enemies live there. They founded the hospital 1932 and took the basement as their house because of the great depression. The hospital eventually closed, but the town’s people don’t really know because no one went to it anyway.” She doesn’t take her eyes off the road.
Edward eyes are still concerned but the bit of news calms him. He sits back and puts his arm around me, for my sake or for his, I’m not entirely sure.
“Where is she leading us?” and how did I end up with Emmett and Alice and Jasper? They’re sitting in back paying no attention to anything but themselves. Stupid leeches.
“From the looks of it, we’re going to the old hospital.” Says the old cab driver and we take a sharp left down and narrow, dark, lane.
“Hospital?” asks Alice, suddenly concerned about something other than herself. But why?
“It’s not very busy now that there’s a newer one closer to town. It might even be closed.” Alice and Emmett both seem to let out a sigh of relief, but Jasper’s is by far the biggest sigh and maybe the most relief. Why do they care? Ooooh. A hospital filled with sick, dying people, bleeding people. That’s the last place on earth that a ‘vegetarian’ vampire would like to be. Even if it’s closed I’m sure it still smells like blood. Ha, sucks for them.
As we come to the end of the scary lane we see a small brick building rise before us. It’s old and kind of creepy, and it doesn’t look anything like a hospital. Everyone climbs out of the cars and we pay the drivers and they drive off. None of us move except Julia. She walks forward, slowly. And then she turns around and waves us over.
We catch up and walk in through the big doorway. We enter and it’s so dark I can’t see anything, not at all like hospitals should be. Edward’s grip on my hand tightens.
“Why is it so dark in here?” Jasper whispers.
“Sorry about that folks but the building was built without electricity and we aren’t big fans of the sunlight.” says an all too familiar voice.
A match lights and we see his face. Aro. I shiver. Edward let’s go of my hand and gently pushes me behind him. He stands taller shielding me.
“What is going on here?” Carlisle asks.
“Sorry but I’m afraid you’re all going to have to wait for the answer to that one. Before we get this show on the road I need to get back my right hand man. Or should I say woman?” asks Aro as he takes the lighted match and lights a lantern filling the room with enough light to see everyone, but not enough to know our surroundings. “Jane?” he asks.
Julia/Jane takes three steps forward and turns. She’s siding with him. But she said she was good. Edward said we could trust her. What’s going on?
“What’s going on you ask?” She says speaking directly to Carlisle. Her voice is no longer the sweet and innocent one I imprinted on. No, it’s a mean and harsh voice. One that I know will haunt me for the rest of my life. “Well, Jacob why don’t you tell them?”
“You knew she was on the other side?! You idiot dog!” Emmett says lunging for me. Carlisle, Esme, and Jasper stop him. Alice stares blankly at them. Then her head lurches back. She had a vision. I want to tell everyone. I want to ask her what she saw but I’m too busy being shocked by the fact that everyone now thinks that I’m the evil liar.
“No!” I say, “I didn’t know she was on the other side. She told me the same thing as you.”
“Yes,” answers Jane, “But I gave you all the signs. It’s not my fault you’re a stupid dog and can’t figure that out.”
“Signs?! What signs?!” I say trying as best I can to control my temper.
“Oh come on. I let you find me out. I told you that entire thing, if you were smart you would have seen right through it, but you’re not and you bought every word.”
“What?!” I yell, unable to do anything else.
“You thought I could actually do those things? I could actually make people fall in love with me? Please. We were lucky enough that you actually fell for me.” She scoffs. “You know I told them they were wrong. I told them that they wouldn’t be able to fool you. That you were too smart, that you had common sense. I. Was. Wrong.”
“You bitch.” I whisper. I take a few steps back and the crowd parts. I scream letting out all my anger. I run and close my eyes. When I open them, I’m the werewolf I was meant to be.
Jake growls at her feet. Edward takes a few steps back, gently guiding me behind him, away from Jane, away from danger. Suddenly Jacob stops growling, instead he howls in pain. No! Jane’s hurting him! Jacob falls over and starts twitching.
“Stop!” I yell before I can stop myself. Everyone turns to me shocked that I’m barking out orders. Jane even stops hurting Jacob.
“Bella,” Edward whispers begging me to stop. That’s when I realize something. Edward wasn’t protecting me from Jane. He’s trying to get as close to the door as possible. So we can run. But now I’ve brought attention to us. Oops.
“Don’t tell me you guys were trying to run!” Aro says chuckling. “Even if you did find the door there’s no way I would let you leave without saying goodbye first.”
He crouches down into his vampire stance, hissing, ready to kill…gulp…me. Jasper, Emmett, Alice, Esme and Carlisle form a wall in between Aro and Edward and me. The all bend over and start hissing back. Jacob gets up and joins in.
“What you’re not going to fight, Edward?” Jane says leaning down into her stance. She hisses not taking her eyes off of Edward.
“You don’t want me fighting. You’re already outnumbered, 6 to 2. I don’t want to make it unfair.” Edward grins but it’s not the crooked grin I fell in love with, no this is much more…scary.
Aro lunges forward taking Esme with him. The punches and clawing are to fast for me to see them. Then they stop and Esme falls to the ground.
“There. Now it’s only 5 to 2.” Aro says grinning, his eyes twinkle with…evil-ness?
Edward turns to me and kisses me on the cheek then he pushes my gently back into the shadows. ‘I love you.’ He pushes the hair out of my face. ‘Stay.’ He says as he turns away.
Emmett and Carlisle are beside Esme. They gently move her to the side, next to me. Their eyes tell me to watch her, make sure she’s alright. Edward crouches down and makes sure Esme’s alright before returning to his stance and hissing. The noise shakes the entire room. I close my eyes. I’m not sure I want to see this. My eyes shoot open. I can’t bear not to watch.
