He held her in his arms and kissed her. She knew he was thirsty and weak from self-deprivation, but that did not fully explain the desperation with which his lips met hers. She wondered if the love she felt was entirely her own, or if some of it came from him.
“Alice, may I ask you something?” he whispered, pulling partially away.
“Of course,” she said, confused. She had not seen this coming.
He slipped further away, and dropped to one knee. Both her foresight and her conscious mind exploded in realization, but she pushed the vision away. She did not want to anticipate what had to happen here.
“Alice, I know you probably see this coming, but I still hope I kept this choice from my thoughts enough to surprise you. You love surprises, and I love you. It was hard, though, because you’re on my mind every minute. You are the light of my life, the sun in the dark. I want you by my side forever. Will you marry me?”
And she wanted to say the answer that would bring joy, but she could not. “Jazz… I’m so sorry. I can’t…”
His eyes darkened in hurt and rage, and she felt the hopeful joy in the air and in herself shift. He looked as though he would have cried. Even kneeling, he was almost as tall as the petite woman, but there was something so fragile, so vulnerable, so open, about his supplicative posture that she found it even harder than she would have expected.
“Why not? I thought we were meant to be together, forever.”
She casts her eyes down. “I’m not sure about that.”
“Don’t leave! Please, Alice. I know I am not as pure and good as you are, that I am a killer a thousand times over, but please, please don’t leave me. I love you so much.”
“I’m not leaving.”
He catches the intonation. “What have you seen?” Then, almost brusquely, a confident promise, “I won’t leave you.”
“Don’t promise me something you can’t deliver.” She is almost angry, trying to hide the natural vivacity that makes her so open and so easily hurt.
“Alice, what have you seen?” His calm is so forceful she cannot brush him off. She could never do that to him.
“I’m going to be part of a family, Jazz. We’re going to find the Cullens soon. I don’t want you to feel bound to them, to me. It’s too much to ask of you, and I don’t want you to feel like you’re making me choose between my husband and my family.”
“You aren’t the only one who’s joining them.”
“What if it’s too much, too hard? What if you slip and they send you away? What if…”
He can see through her. He always could. “This isn’t the real reason and you know it. Tell me.” And his eyes, still blood-red from his latest “slip”, a mistake that cost a six-year-old child her lifeblood, bore into hers with an unstoppable intensity.
She sighs and tells the truth. “The Cullens have a daughter. She’s twenty-one and her name is Rosalie. She was supposed to be Edward’s mate, but it never worked out. I’m afraid…”
He laughs. “You think I’ll leave you for someone I don’t know? I loveyou, Alice, not this Cullen girl.”
“You don’t understand! You can control feelings. I can see the future. She is… beautiful. That’s her power, her ability. She is beautiful. I don’t want you to be bound to me when we are headed straight towards this unbelievably perfect goddess who is looking for love.”
He sighs and gently takes her hand. He is still on one knee. “I have an unbelievably perfect goddess, right in front of me. Alice, I will never love anyone else. Never. You are the only one who will matter to me. I will do anything, anything, for you. Do you understand? You are beautiful. More importantly, you are kind, intelligent, talented. You are the loveliest creature I have ever seen. You are the one I’m meant to be with. I’ve been waiting for you forever.”
She smiles at the reference, a cautious smile, but she trusts him. Abruptly, her eyes focus on something in the distance, and she lets out a tiny “oh.”
“I saw something.” She smiles. He does not need to know her embarrassing and
sudden realization. There is a fifth member of the Cullen family. The previously unknown and gigantic man holds Rosalie’s hand. She wonders how she missed him before. She wonders how she ever could have doubted when she knows that her Jazz was made for her.
He is curious, but his impending questioning is interrupted by her soft voice.
“Jasper, I will marry you. I love you.”
He stands, shocked, jubilant, and answers her with a kiss.
They know they will be happy. The love he is giving off is so strong that it could be felt miles away. Through the glee, he registers her relief. He knows what she’s seen, and he holds her closer. He knows her and loves her. They are perfect for one another.
The tiny, beautiful woman sees tomorrow in his dreams.
The tall, handsome man sees forever in her eyes.
