Alice's POV

The music started to play. A soft, tender waltz floated out over the dance floor. The bride and groom walked to the middle of the floor, and started to dance. I noticed with amusement how her feet were on top of his, guiding her as they twirled across the room.

Gradually, as their confidence increased, other couples took to the floor. The music changed to a more upbeat tempo. The dancers responded, energetically swinging across the room.

My eyes roamed the room, searching for someone, or something to watch.

My gaze settled on Jacob Black, standing cautiously on the outskirts of the crowd. His gaze was fixated on Edward and Bella, and although his stance was casual, his face betrayed his true feelings. Pain, jealousy and even anger flickered across his face, until it seemed like it was all too much for him.

He turned away from them, his hands shaking. He closed his eyes, and I could see he was fighting for control.

Interesting how similarities can exist, even between the most polar opposites of species. I would have to speak to Carlisle about it. Maybe after I'd gone shopping.

Jacob's eyes flickered open again, distracting me from my train of thought. I noticed that I wasn't the only one observing Jacob. My eyes sought those of Jasper, who was concentrating on Jacob's face.

Of course. The emotions that Jacob must have been feeling would have attracted Jasper to him like a moth to a lamp. It must have seemed like Jacob was shouting, so intense were his emotions.

I could see that Jasper was calming Jacob down, and his shakes lessened.

Jacob blinked.

When he opened his eyes, all hell broke loose.

The first thing I noticed was that Jasper disappeared.

Not literally, of course, but the part of my brain that was always connected to Jasper and his future was suddenly gone.

My eyes flickered to Jacob. His eyes had changed, and he was looking at Jasper with what seemed like... longing.

As I watched, Bella walked over to Jacob and engaged him in a meaningless conversation.

I looked at Jasper. He seemed confused, as if Jacob's feelings made no sense to him.

Jacob turned away from Bella, and walked over to the rows of seats, where Jasper was sitting, lost in his thoughts.

To my surprise, Jacob sat only a few seats along from Jasper, seeminly unrepulsed.

As casually as I could manage, I walked over to the seats, and sat a row behind Jasper and Jacob.

Leaning my head against the seat, I closed my eyes and concentrated on seeing Jasper. To my frustration, all I could see was a black void, much like the one I saw when the werewolves decided to mingle their fate with ours.

It hit me then, like a bolt of lightning

Jacob.

And Jasper.

A fight?

Or something worse?

"Alice?" It was Edward, his voice low and urgent

"Yes?"

"We need to talk to Carlisle. Fast."

I looked across at Carlisle, engaged in conversation with Charlie.

"Carlisle?" I called, my voice carrying easily over the heads of the noisy crowd. He turned, said a hasty goodbye to Charlie, and was sitting next to me in an instant.

"What is it?"

I looked sideways at Edward, staring off into the distance, his eyes unfocussed.

"Something is going to happen with Jasper and Jacob. A fight, maybe."

"His future disappeared?"

"Yes"

"I'm sure it's nothing, but even so... we should tell Jasper"

I nodded. To my surprise, Edward spoke, his voice almost incredulous.

"It's more than that. I think... I think Jacob imprinted on Jasper"

"WHAT?!" I yelled, my voice earning glances from the other guests.

I lowered my voice, and tried again.

"How is that even possible? Carlisle?"

"I... I don't know. It's possible, yes, but how did it even happen? Surely the revulsion alone would prevent such a... connection between them. Maybe the vampires and the werewolves have more in common than we think. I will have to do more research. In the meantime, someone must tell Jasper"

He looked at me

"Alice...?"

"I imagine he already knows", murmured Edward.

"Of course. The emotions Jacob must be feeling... would be overwhelming to Jasper" pointed out Carlisle

"He knows?"

"Maybe. In any case, you should go and talk to -"

"Fine" I interrupted. "I will"

I hopped over the seats and was beside Jasper in an instant.

"We need to talk"

I shot a sideways glance at Jacob, sitting a few seats down, and trying very hard to pretend he wasn’t eavesdropping.

"In private"

Without visually acknowledging my words, Jasper rose and casually walked over to a secluded spot on the edge of the crowd.

He looked at me, expectantly.

"Jasper...." I began

"What's wrong?" he asked, his brow furrowed in concern. "You're worried"

"Jasper... Jacob imprinted... on you.

"What?!"

It was Bella, standing in her white dress, with a shocked expression on her face.

Oh dear.
