Bella’s POV

I stood, watching Jacob walk away. What was wrong with him? Surely it was more than just the pain of seeing me in Edward's arms. He had seen that many times. I was surprised he even came, to the reception at least. It would have been more then he could bear to see the ceremony.

I was interrupted from my thoughts as Renee rushed over, gushing about my dress, the flowers, everything. I nodded mutely, absentmindedly agreeing with what she was saying.

Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Alice and Edward having hushed discussion, their mouths moving to fast to see. As I watched, Alice called Carlisle over, and he seemed just as concerned as them. What was going on? Had Alice seen something? Remembering Edward's promise, I tried to extricate myself from the conversation with Renee.

By the time I escaped, the group had disbanded. Alice had left, and was now walking across to Jasper. Knowing I had a better chance of getting the truth from Alice or Jasper, I walked over to where they were speaking, on the outskirts of the crowd.

I only heard the last part of the conversation.

"Jasper... Jacob imprinted... on you."

"What?!" I yelled at Alice, completely forgetting that we were at a wedding, surrounded by people.

Her eyes widened with shock upon noticing me, and she shot an anxious glance at Jasper.

"Just now. Right before you were talking to him."

"What? I didn't really notice..." I drew in a short gasp, as I realised why Jacob had been acting strangely.

I was then that the full weight of Alice’s words crashed down on me.

He imprinted.

On Jasper

I had made my choice. I stood here, in my wedding dress, with a diamond on my finger. His diamond. I was his. So why did I feel like I was losing Jacob? Why did I care about him? Of course I wanted him to be happy. I wanted so desperately for Jacob to find happiness.

But of all the people to imprint on! Jasper! A vampire. A man.

And what's more, one that happened to be completely and utterly devoted to my best friend.

Jacob was going to get hurt. Badly. In more ways than one.

I smiled, in spite of myself, imagining Jacob's reaction. My smile twisted as I realised what would happen.

Of course, knowing Jacob, he would rebel against this. Rebel hard.

In the end though, he wouldn’t be able to resist it. As Jacob had once said, "Gravity moves"

And what of Jasper?

I looked across at him. He was staring at Alice, unmistakable pain in his eyes.

Just by the look in his eyes, I knew I was intruding on a deeply personal moment.

"Sorry" I muttered, and walked over to the seats. I sat down and leaned my head on the side of the seat, closing my eyes. I was suddenly so... tired

I felt smooth ice brush my cheek for a fraction of a second.

"Bella" he whispered

I sat up.

"I have to speak to Jacob"

"Bella..." he trailed off, leaving the threat hanging in mid-air.

"I have to. I can only imagine what he's feeling right now"

"Go then. But be back as quick as you can"

I smiled, glad that he was finally mine.

I stood up, and walked over to where Jacob sat, now alone.

"Jacob" I said, cautiously

"Bella" he replied, his voice flat, indifferent

"I know" I began, "About you... and Jasper"

He locked his eyes with mine, and in that moment I could see the wolf in his eyes.

"I don't know what to do, what to say... I can't help it. I want him. I need him. But I also still want you, Bella. It's like there are two people in my mind, fighting for control. One side, the one I know so well, is repulsed by the very idea of a bloodsucker. It recoils at the very thought of you with one of them. But this other side, this new side... It's pushy. It won't rest until it gets what it wants. But I know where that path will lead. He could never want me, never need me the way I do him. It’s madness, Bella!" I don't know what to do."

The pain registered in his eyes clearly, and I reached over and pulled Jacob into my arms, soothing him.

"It will be alright. We will figure out something. Is there any chance you can fight it?"

"No, Bella. You know that. When you see that person... it’s like the whole world dissolves and it's just you two. I'd do anything, be anyone for him, Bella.

"And..." he paused, his voice coming out in a hoarse whisper. "I'm not sure if I really want to fight it"

I pulled away from him, and sighed

"Jacob... what are we going to do?"

A soft, musical voice floated over the crowd, easily reaching where we sat.

"Yes Jacob... what are you going to do?"

I looked up, my heart frozen in my chest, as terror stole across my body like a virus.

Of course, he was already at my side, a low growl rumbling from his throat.

Edward looked across the crowd, and spoke two words. Yet those words were so twisted, so laden with hate and contempt that I could hardly believe who they came from.

"Hello, Jane"
