Edward's POV

Poor Bella. I could see she was upset about the whole 'incident' with Jacob, and I was distressed from seeing her like that.

From where I was sitting, I could see that she had pulled Jacob into her arms, comforting him. I flinched, and averted my eyes away from them. I scanned the crowd. Everyone seemed to be having a good time, completely unaware to the fact that a crisis was raging.

My eyes reached the edge of the crowd, and what I saw made my blood run cold. Metaphorically, of course.

In the edge of the crowd, just metres away from Bella, stood a small, slight figure, wearing a dark, hooded cloak

I sprang out of my seat and in a fraction of a second; I was by her side, standing between her and the intruder

They lifted up their head, so I could see their face.

A low rumble slipped from my throat, and my body tensed, fighting the urge to spring forward and demolish her.

I ripped two words from my throat, coming out in a guttural snarl

"Hello, Jane"

She lifted her hood, and smiled at me, a beautiful, malevolent simper.

I was on the ground before I even knew it, pain rippling through my skull. A soft, tinkling laugh reached my ears, as she turned away from me.

"Well Bella. Isn't that a nice dress! how come nobody thought to invite me to the wedding? How rude" she frowned, the ugly expression ruining her perfect face.

I snarled, glaring at Jane.

"Now now Edward, don't be so hostile. Let us not forget, we are at a wedding, with so many ample refreshments..." Her voice trailed off, leaving the unpleasant threat hanging in the air.

I shuddered as images of a mangled Charlie drifted through my head

"You wouldn't dare"

"Oh, I would. Ah, Carlisle! So nice for you to join us"

I looked around, and saw that the other members of my family had converged behind me, their expressions mimicking my own.

Carlisle’s voice was low and soothing, as he tried to diffuse the situation.

"Jane - to what do I owe this visit?"

"Oh, I just came for a friendly chat. You see, I am quite surprised to find Bella here human. I had hoped that my last visit would have... spurred on the... proceedings"

What does he see in her? She is just a human! Sure, maybe he is her singer, but why can’t he just be normal and kill her, already? Why can't they all be normal?

I glared at Jane, daring her to continue her thoughts

"Carlisle, get her out of here! We can't risk this." I said in a low mutter, hoping that Jane would not hear

"Of course. Jane, why don't we discuss this at my house? I would be happy to provide accommodation for you, should you require it"

"Fine. But Edward..." Her face broke into a smile, as an image of Bella, dead flashed across my mind.

“This isn't over. I would advise you to... keep

watch over your precious human tonight"

I lunged towards her, but something stopped me. I looked back, to see Emmett, effortlessly holding me back.

By the time I got free, Carlisle was already leading her away, her sick thoughts fading from my mind.

Bella's POV

"Edward, NO! I will not let you do that!"

"Bella, everything is going to be fine. We are simply going to... talk with Jane. There is no reason for you to be worried"

"Edward, do you remember the last time we 'talked' with the Volturi? We barely escaped with our lives, and now we're under obligation to change me!"

"It's not, going to be like that, I promise."

"Why can't I come with you?"

"Bella, I will not have you near that... thing"

"Fine. I’ll be waiting. And when you get back, you are going to tell me everything"

He looked at me, an exasperated look on his face.

"Alright. Goodbye, love"

His lips pressed against my forehead, and he smiled his crooked smile.

"Be Safe"

And then he was out the door. I sat down, feeling useless. There was nothing to distract me now from the dismal hours that lay ahead. I walked into the kitchen, and got an apple put of the fridge. Seizing my copy of 'Wuthering Heights', I sat down on the couch and tried to relax.

It was no use. I switched on the television, but there was nothing on, only home shopping adverts and daytime soaps. My mind wandering, I soon drifted off to sleep

I was in a cold, round circular room, one that I immediately recognised as the tower room in Volterra.

The room was empty except for me and another person, curled into a ball in the corner.

I walked over to them, reaching a hand out to help

The person snarled, and Alice turned towards me, her eyes a shocking burgundy. She lunged at me, and the room dissolved into darkness

A cold breeze blew over my face, and I snuggled back under the covers, not fully awake.

"Good morning"

My eyes fluttered open.

"Edward! What happened?"

He chuckled.

"I was hoping to prolong this conversation... but I guess I did promise."

"Yes, you did!"

He fixed my with a long, cool stare.

"Bella... Jane... well, the Volturi... have some demands"
