Chapter 1: The Drive
As Edward drove down the dark, straight road through the misting rain in silence, our hands intwined, I began to realize what I had just decided. The more I thought about what I had agreed to do in just a few short months, the more I feared where we were driving; what we were about to do.
I could imagine it now: a purple-faced Charlie, jumping from his usual place on the couch and running across the room to strangle my love. After a few failed attempts to stop my fiancé from breathing, an even angrier Charlie would run from the room, returning seconds later with his 92’ revolver. After a shot had been fired without even injuring the love of my life, Charlie would begin asking questions. It would all go down the tubes after that.
With each prediction of Charlie’s reaction and my future family’s demise, I became more and more tense. Edward seemed to notice. He gazed into my eyes, taking his focus off of the never-ending road. I hate it when he does that.
“Bella. You seem worried. Your heart is beating so fast and loud I can’t hear myself think, and I’m only holding your hand! Please, tell me what’s wrong.”
“I’m just thinking.” I replied, my voice cracking, I was still having visions of murder attempts to my future husband in my head.
“I really wish I could read your mind, love. But you know that I can’t. Please tell me what’s wrong; I hate seeing you in pain, and the expression on your face is driving me crazy with confusion. Is this about Jacob?”
I laughed at that. How could this be about Jacob? I had made my decision, and I had chosen Edward. After last night, I was finally ready to move on. I was ready to start my life with the man that I loved. Never again would my sweet fiancé see me thinking about any other man, even though I still loved Jacob like a brother.
“Please, tell me, Bella.” he begged, his lower lip quivering slightly as he looked at me with pleading golden eyes.
“I'm just thinking about how Charlie is going to react when we tell him, and each time I think about it, it leads to Charlie attempting to shoot you and then eventually finding out your family’s identity.” I said, looking down at my feet, embarrassed.
“You mean our family’s identify?” he corrected, smiling. He placed a finger under my chin, pulling me into his gaze. I stared back, dazzled by his gorgeous, sparkling, honey-gold eyes. He leaned down and kissed me lightly on the lips. It was gentle, yet at the same time passionate and overjoyed. As much as I didn’t want to, I unhooked my arms from around his neck and pushed against his chest gently, hoping he would get the message.
He pulled back from our embrace, a confused expression on his face.
“It just makes me nervous, to do that while you are driving.” I explained, hoping that he would understand.
He laughed, wholeheartedly and joyously. It sounded like the chorus of a thousand angels, and it made my heart flutter. “What?” I asked, extremely confused why this would be funny; he knew that it made me uncomfortable when he didn’t pay attention to the road.
“We aren’t moving, love. Look out the window.”
I turned slowly, fearing what I would see. And, sure enough, there it was; my house. I could only imagine what was going to happen within a matter of minutes. Uh oh, here come the visions again...
Then Edward broke my train of thought with another kiss, but this one was deeper, full of passion and desire. Suddenly, he broke away. I looked at him sadly, panting, a pouty look on my face.
“We should go inside,” he said, holding me close in a tight embrace, letting me catch my breath. Suddenly, he smirked, my favorite crooked smile playing on his lips, “Charlie is starting to worry about when we are coming back, and what we could possibly be doing that is keeping us out so long.”
We laughed lightly for a moment, taking in the humor---in spite of what was about to happen. Then he was at my door, holding out his hand, helping me effortlessly out of the car.
Then, we walked silently towards my house, to tell my father the news of our engagement. God, I really hope Edward is sure that he is bulletproof.
