I quickly brushed my teeth and pulled the elastic from my hair.
“Well”, I thought, looking in the mirror, “not as good as any vampire, but it will do.” I rushed to my room, smiling with anticipation at the thought of Edward waiting for me, but my smile slid from my face as I scanned the room – no Edward.
I wondered if he was hiding and softly whispered “Edward?” to the room. No answer. I waited, but still, nothing. “Edward”, I said again, “this really isn’t funny.” I was starting to get frustrated.
There was still no answer. Discouraged, I got into bed and turned out the light, all the while, thinking of Edward.
After about 15 minutes I realized that I just wasn’t going to get to sleep without Edward being there. I pulled out my cope of Sense and Sensibility and began to read.
I must have fallen asleep at some stage but I couldn’t be exactly sure. Edward and Jacob flitted in and out of my dreams, but always blurred, like they were moving when a photo was taken.
The birds woke me up - too early for my liking. I turned away from my wall, which I had fallen asleep facing, sat up and stretched. It took me a few seconds to comprehend that there was someone sitting on my rocking chair.
“Edward?” I asked.
There was a soft laugh and as I rubbed at my eyes I saw that it wasn’t Edward on the chair he so frequently occupied, but Alice.
“Silly Bella”, she trilled in her sing-song voice, “you humans take ages to wake up in the morning don’t you?” She smiled as she said this but stopped when she saw me looking at her. “Are you alright Bella?”
“Where’s Edward?” I asked.
“He went hunting”. Alice said it with complete confidence and sincerity, but my experience with vampires was enough to tell me her words weren’t 100% true.
“What aren’t you telling me Alice?” She looked at me as though to gauge whether she could tell me. She seemed to decide I could.
“Victoria was in Forks last night Bella. Edward went with Carlisle and Emmett to…” she seemed to be on the verge of saying something, “…stop her”, she continued after awhile.
I gasped and threw my hands over my mouth in horror. Alice seemed to regret telling me but was immediately by my side and putting her arm consolingly around my shoulders.
“Bella, you don’t need to worry, everything will be fine.”Even with her abilities to see the future, I couldn’t help but to not trust her at the time. She seemed to notice. “Trust me Bella”, she said.
She stiffened in her seat. “Charlie”, she warned, “I’ll be back later”. Then she was gone, leaving me to worry about Edward and the others.
I would have gone into a frenzy had it not been for a soft knock on the door. “Bella?” Charlie’s voice did nothing to calm my frazzled nerves but I responded the best I could.
“Yeah?” so much for a great response, but I couldn’t be bothered by that right now.
“Good, you’re up; I was worried I might wake you. I’m going fishing with some mates from work, did you want to come?”
“Thanks dad, but I think I’ll pass”, sitting on a boat with your work friends and being surrounded by smelly fish isn’t my idea of fun, I refrained from adding.
“Ok, didn’t expect you to come anyway. I’ll be back at 4. See you then.” I waited until Charlie was well and truly gone before I did anything. I didn’t know exactly what that would be yet but decided I may as well get changed.
I was just in the middle of doing my hair when Alice appeared at my side. Her facial expression left me no time to be surprised by her sudden arrival.
“Bella”, she said. Her voice sounded strained as she led me back to my room, “why don’t you sit down?” I sat cautiously on the end of my bed and looked up into her pained face.
She was still so beautiful even when she appeared pained, but I barely registered this, I was focused on what she was about to say…
