“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

We stood there gazing into each other’s eyes, dreading the time when I would have to go home. After what seemed like forever, we silently got into his car and he pulled out of the parking lot. He drove like a maniac. His justification was that he loved speed. What vampire didn’t love speed, anyway? Ignoring all laws of the state, he pushed 100 miles per hour. That broke my limit.

“David! This is a small road! Slow down!” I screeched. He rolled his eyes and pressed on the brakes. We were then going 50 in a 25 mile zone. A fair trade. Before we could round the corner to my house, though, he abruptly stopped the car, making the seat belt catch me before I smashed up against the dash board.

“David, what the-” He suddenly turned the car around and speeded down the road at way more then 100 miles per hour. “DAVID!”

“No time to explain, Reese!” He pressed on the gas pedal even more and the car shot forward at an even greater speed. I gripped the edges of the seat and leaned back, closing my eyes so that I wouldn’t have to see the trees flying by at impossible speeds.

“Da-vid! I-I-” I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself enough to get my words out. “PULL OVER RIGHT NOW OR TELL ME WHAT’S HAPPENING!” He looked shocked at my outburst, but kept on driving at an insane rate. “Fine then. I’ll get out of the car my self.” My grabbed the door handle. I really hoped he wouldn’t make me go through with it.

“My God, Reese! Calm down! I’ll explain things to you when you are out of danger!” He looked at me pleadingly, trying to make me understand.

“How am I in danger?”

“Reese…Let me get us as far away from that town as possible before I try to explain anything. Even with my fast reflexes I would probably crash this car if I tried to search for the right words!”

I didn’t want to let it drop, but I knew if was most likely for the best.

For the next few hours he continued to drive. He still wouldn’t tell me what was going on and I was getting mightily frustrated. Vampire be damned! If he didn’t tell me soon I would have to knock some sense into his marble body. But I was too tired to try to get any information out of him. I sunk into a restless sleep.

When I woke up it was early morning and the moon was still present. The moonlight highlighted his brown hair and perfect features. I bet that I just looked like a zombie with my messed up red hair and bags under my eyes. He saw that I was awake and gave me a dazzling smile.

“David?” His name felt like sugar on my tongue. All anger I had last night evaporated when he smiled.

“Yes, love?”

“Where are we?” I looked out the window. The scenery flashed by quickly, but it still looked unfamiliar.

“We’re in Washington.”

“Washington?! We came from Montana! How could we get here so fast?”

“I drive fast.” Oh yah…

“Will you now tell me what happened last night?” I asked pleadingly. He sighed and leaned back in his seat.

“Did I ever tell you about my ‘friends’?”

“Well, before I moved to Montana, I was in a coven somewhere in Vermont. They didn’t really like that I just dissociated myself with them so quickly and I guess they never got over that grudge. I was after all a good addition to their group.” I rolled my eyes at him. He was proud of his power. He could create illusions. But he never liked to use them. He always liked being truthful.

“And…?” I prompted him.

“They in time found out about you and wanted revenge for me leaving. They don’t take disloyalty lightly.”

“And they were at my house last night? Is that why you wouldn’t go there?” He nodded. “Now what?”

“Uh…I know some other vampires in Forks. I’m hoping that they would help us out a little.”

“Oh.” I wanted to ask a question, but I didn’t know how he would respond. “Do they feed of humans? Or animals like you?”

“Animals.” I sighed in relief. Red eyes always creep me out.

“How many?”

“How many what?”

“How many are there?” He took in a deep breath.

“Oh.” I yawned. I didn’t get a lot of sleep and I was deathly tired.

“Sleep,” he commanded me.

“I don’t know if I can.” He started to rub my back and hum a lullaby. I fell asleep within minutes.
