I knocked frantically on Jacob’s door and shot a few glances over my shoulder. I’d been able to avoid all the wolves on my way here, but it was only a matter of time before they noticed my scent. When I turned back around the door was open and Jacob was standing there, staring at me.

I pushed past him, into his living room and started pacing.

“Bella?” he asked, confused.

I turned to face him. “Okay, first of all, WHY WERE YOU EAVESDROPPING AT PROM?!?!” I shouted.

HE backed up, holding his hands out in front of him, ready to defend himself. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I just wanted to see how things were going with you two. I was worried about you.”

I deflated, anger turning back to misery. “And now he knows who I am…” I sighed.

“What? He does?? Did I- Oh shoot! He read my mind? I’m so sorry Bella!”

“It’s okay, you didn’t mean to.” I looked up at him. “And now I’m here to say goodbye.”

His eyes widened. “You’re leaving…” his voice trailed off. “You don’t have to! You can stay here!”

“No, we’d get too sick of each other’s smell,” I joked feebly.

He smiled slightly. “So this is goodbye?” he asked quietly, becoming serious again.

I nodded and looked up at him, “So do you want to hug or should we skip the mushy stuff?”

Jacob smiled, wrinkled his nose, and strode over to give me a big bear hug. His skin was burning where it touched mine. I wrinkled me nose too. He stepped back and laughed when he saw the look on my face.

I smiled back at him and then flopped down on his couch. “I don’t want to leave,” I mumbled into a pillow.

“You can’t just forget him?” Jacob asked, sitting down next to me.

“Not only do I have to forget him again, I have to forget his whole family. And my whole family.”

“Your family? Why?” he asked.

“They’re moving in with the Cullens.” I curled into a small ball on the couch and tried to disappear into the cushions.

“Did you tell them the desperation of the situation?” Jacob asked. That rhymed!

“No. It I did they would try to get me and Edward back together.” I felt a jolt of pain at the mention of his name. With a wave of horror, I realized I was sinking back into the old way I had been. Bit by bit, my happiness was leaving me. I realized that I was sobbing tearlessly.

“I don’t want this pain again! I lived through it for 60 years!” I cried, “I- I just can’t do it!”

Jacob rubbed my back rhythmically as I sobbed. Finally, I sat back and looked up at him.

“Thanks. I really needed that,” I told him.

“Always here to help,” he said, smiling. I looked at him for a moment.

“Hey, why do you even care? Aren’t we supposed to be mortal enemies?” I asked.

He rolled his eyes. “Bella, I don’t think I could ever hate you. We were friends before you were changed and we’re still friends after,” He paused and averted his eyes. “And to tell you the truth, I used to have a huge crush on you,” he muttered.

I thought back to that day at the beach so long ago. I looked at Jacob guiltily. “I’m sorry. I’m not really the best person to have a crush on.”

Jacob only laughed then we sat in silence. It wasn’t rally awkward, just that we didn’t really have anything to say. I sighed happily and relaxed for the first time in a very long time.

After a while, I noticed Jacob was snoring lightly. I stood up and reality came rushing back to me. Now would be the easiest time to leave. I left a note stuck to the door that read “Thanks. For everything. And I’m sorry. For everything.”

Then, I started running toward a place that had an overpopulation of mountain lions.
