I spun around in time to see someone bursting into a giant ball of russet colored fur. It was someone I vaguely knew from long ago. The giant wolf barreled into me, but I was too shocked to fight back. Suddenly, the realization hit me.

“Jacob?” I managed to gasp. The wolf stopped in surprise, seeming to realize that we knew each other. I struggled to my feet.

“Jacob?” I asked again. This time, the wolf sprinted away, coming back moments later as the human that I had met so long ago.

“How do you know my name?” Jacob asked suspiciously.

I didn’t answer, just stared at him. How could he still be alive? Wouldn’t he be in his seventies? Why does he look like he is twenty? The only differences were that he was huge and that he had cut his hair. I'd liked it better long.

“Who are you?” he demanded.

“Bella,” I whispered.

“Bella?” he asked, his eyes widening, “but you disappeared when the Cullens left. They changed you. They broke the –“

“No,” I cut him off. “It’s not like that. Victoria bit me. I moved here a little while ago and ran into the Cullens. We’re not together anymore.” I didn’t say his name, but Jacob knew who I meant.

“Why aren’t you dead?” I demanded. “Why did you turn into a wolf? How did you know that I’m a vampire?”

“Wow, there’s so much that you don’t know.” He said, staring at me. “I’ll try to explain. I’m a werewolf. We, like vampires, don’t age. We are the mortal enemy of vampires. Wolves made a treaty with the Cullens long before you were even born. We wouldn’t kill them if they didn’t bite anyone. The reason I know you’re a vampire is because you absolutely reek.”

“You stink too.” I said smugly. “Besides, you can’t kill us. We’re too strong.”

“Oh yes we can!” Jacob said, looking pleased. “Get out of here before the rest of the pack comes.”

I noticed that the nasty smell was getting stronger and I did a quick 360 to find that I was surrounded by wolves emerging from the trees. The only way out was past Jacob.

“I’ll let you off this time,” he muttered, stepping to the side. I dashed past him, running until I reached the Cullen’s house.

The Cullens and the Whites were all outside, looking worried. I slowed to a stop in front of Heather.

“Where were you and why do you reek?” she demanded. I saw Edward standing behind her, looking like he wanted to know the same thing.

“Well,” I began, “I went running and ran into a huge smelly wolf. It tried to kill me, but I escaped and came back here.” Jacob knows. Edward will too, if he listens in to the pack's thoughts.

“Can we leave now?” I asked loudly. I rushed over to Edward and said “I need to speak with Edward for a minute, and then we can go.”

We ran into the woods and I pushed him onto a tree stump. I glared at him threateningly. He returned my gaze, looking confused.

“What did you hear?” I demanded.

“What do you mean ‘hear’?” he asked, playing dumb.

“You know!” I cried. “You can hear thoughts. What did you hear?” I stared into his eyes, trying to find an answer, but they were as bottomless as ever. He stared steadily back, looking for the right words.

“I can’t hear your thoughts,” he muttered. “The only other was – Bella!” he cried hopefully. I wanted to tell the truth, but I couldn’t give in. I was like an abused animal. Wanting to be able to trust someone and go back to the love of my life, but afraid to be hurt again.

“No,” I said. “Bella’s dead. I’m Abi.” And it was true. She disappeared sixty years ago, I was Abigail White. Edward looked at me glumly and nodded. Wow, he must really be depressed. He actually believed me…

Since he apparently hadn’t heard anything important, all I had to do was keep him away from the wolves for the rest of his existence. By now, probably all of the wolves knew my identity. I could tell that Jacob wasn’t good at keeping secrets. I walked quietly towards the Cullen house, ready to gather up my family and leave.

“Michael? Heather? Drew? Kimmy? Can we go home now?” I called in the front yard. Kimmy came running out and stopped a few feet in front of me.

“Alice, Rosalie and I were about to go shopping!” she complained.

I sighed, “At 10 o’clock?”

“Some stores in Port Angeles are open at night.” Alice persisted, suddenly behind me.

“Oh, all right. You can go, but only if I can come with you.” I said sternly.

“I thought you hated shopping.” Kimmy reminded me. I did, but I would go shopping if it meant getting away from Edward. I needed to spend time with Alice where Edward couldn’t hear her thoughts.

“Let’s go shopping!” I said, trying to sound enthusiastic. I sounded like a kid trying to pretend that they liked their birthday present, even though they didn’t, though I knew that the girls were too excited to tell.
