I stomped inside, slamming the door behind me.

“Don’t destroy the house!” Heather called out warningly.

I ran up the stairs to my bedroom and slammed that door too. The smell of wet paint greeted me. Staring at my freshly painted lavender walls I thought what am I doing falling in love again? I know I shouldn’t, but I am. He is just… Edward. He was my life and I can’t shut him out any longer.

I entered my bathroom and looked in the mirror. My hair was a mess, my face was dirty and my make up smeared, and my expression was wrong. It was too pained, not very “Abi.” I’m a mess, I thought.

A few minutes later, I stepped into the shower. My wet hair plastered itself to the back of my neck. I scrubbed it with too much shampoo for my shoulder-length hair, then used double the amount of conditioner. Once I had relaxed, I grabbed my towel and walked to the mirror. I look better, I thought. Then, I pulled on the clothes from the first day of school, put on make up, and took off.

When I stopped, I was in front of an unfamiliar house. It was a large brick house, constructed to look old. I glared at it with hatred. It was in the place of Charlie’s old house, my home. No, I thought, I have a home .This is where… this is a place that holds only bad memories. I have a home, and this isn’t it.

After I’d convinced myself that I have a home, I decided that I owed the Cullens an apology.

I turned, and found Jacob staring at me.

“Don’t call me Bella! Call me Abi!” I looked around, “And if you have to talk to me, then do it in private.”

“Will you come to my house then?”

As we walked, Jacob started asking my questions.

“What happened to you?”

I started to answer simple. “I became a vampire,” but I found myself spilling out my whole life story, starting with Edward leaving. When we reached Jacob’s house, he simply showed me to the couch and told me to continue. I got all the way to seeing him now and finished with “And now I’m telling you everything and you’re probably bored to death and don’t really care, so I should probably just leave you alone and-”

“Okay, stop,” Jacob said. “I’m not bored and I do care. I’m guessing you don’t want Cullen to know who you are, so I can’t get anywhere near him, right?”

“Yes. Did you tell anyone else, like your wolf friends?”

“I didn’t tell them directly, but they know.”

“Okay, so they can never go anywhere near Edward either.” I decided to ignore his strange answer.

“What exactly are you planning to do about this situation?”

“Well, I could just leave, but everyone would want to know why.”

So tell them.”

“But Edward would find out.”

“So? Run away before that. Tell your family that you can’t be with him. They’d help you, wouldn’t they?”

“Yeah, maybe that could work.”

“So leave tomorrow.”

“Ugh,” I sighed. “I can’t. I’m supposed to go with Edward to prom.”

“So? Don’t go.”

“But I promised! I don’t want to abandon him!” Like he did to me…

“Fine,” Jacob decided. “Leave right after.”

“Okay then,” I stood up to leave.

“You don’t want to stay here and catch up?” He asked hopefully.

“And scare everyone at home? Okay.” I sat back down.

We talked about meaningless old things like my truck and the day at the beach so long ago. After an hour I stood up.

“Thanks,” I told him.

As I was walking out the door, Jacob asked one last question.

“Abi, before you leave will you come and say goodbye?”

It took me a second to realize that he meant when I left permanently.

“Okay,” I whispered as I walked out the door.
