Chapter 13

I sighed sadly as I drove home from work. Life just hadn’t been good since we left Bella all those months ago. Emmett didn’t joke as much, Jasper kept making everyone feel guilty, Alice lost her best friend while Esme lost a daughter, and Edward lost his true love. Rosalie was the only one who didn’t seem different on the surface, but I knew that she was upset inside. It hurt her to see her family in pain.

The last time anyone in our family seemed somewhat driven to anything was when I had been searching for Bella when she had disappeared. It had only taken a few days for her to come back, all on her own. She had been with three other humans, and she had seemed healthy. Whatever had happened to her, I was glad for.

Alice and Jasper both had been angry at me for not letting them help look for her. I didn’t want Edward to find out, and become even more separated from out family. At the time, he had been out of town. He still hadn’t come back. All Alice said was that he was looking for something to keep him going.

Esme and I both had tried to convince him to go back, but he had vehemently refused every time. He was so convinced that he was protecting her by leaving. Even if he was, he was hurting himself and her. I didn’t know how she was now, but the nurses all said she had had a severe case of depression before she disappeared.

I pulled up into the driveway, and was caught by the usual wave of guilt and depression. I looked at Jasper, who shrugged. He didn’t even bother to try and lift it anymore.

I walked to my office, trying to ignore the sadness of my family. I put my briefcase down, and finished writing some reports that I hadn’t managed to finish at work.

A knock came at the door. I looked up and called out, “Come in.” Alice quietly came in, followed by Esme.

“Carlisle, I really think we should let Alice just check on Bella, just to see if she is alright,” Esme said in worry. I knew she saw Bella as her daughter, just like I did. But I also knew that we had to follow Edward’s wishes, since he was her mate.

I sighed and shook my head. “We can’t go against Edward’s wishes. Bella falls under his rule, not mine. If he says it is best we leave her alone, we have to respect that. Even though I disagree, I have to listen. He is an adult in age,” I said, sounding as old as I really was.

Esme frowned, but Alice perked up. “He doesn’t have to know…just one little peek, please,” she pleaded. I shook my head. She nodded in understanding. “I knew you would say that,” she said sadly. “I just hoped you wouldn’t.” With that, she and Esme left the room.

The only reason I had said no was because I didn’t want Alice to get in trouble next time Edward came home. I really would have liked to say yes.

I looked out the window, where dark clouds covered whatever little sun came here. It seemed to describe my family’s situation perfectly. I only hoped that soon, the clouds would blow away, and we would be whole once more.
