She drifted away after the other three members of the Volturi, fading away into the darkness of the night. She didn’t look back, didn’t even slow down. She went away with them, away from me.

“Edward…” Jasper said quietly, feeling the pain coming up in me. “I know this is hard for you, but you know she doesn’t have a choice. She isn’t allowed the freedom we have.”

I turned to him, frowning. “What do you mean by that?” I demanded immediately, unsure of what he meant. I had derived Jane’s power from the two male’s minds, but was sure that wasn’t what held Bella back.

Jasper shook his head, and his thoughts displayed his amusement that I didn’t know. “I’m going to guess you’ve never even met the Volturi before, have you?” I shook my head. He hid his thoughts from me, so he could explain to everyone instead of having me learn it first. “When the Volturi takes you into their guard, you belong to them. You’re like a slave. If you disobey or go against them, it’s either severe punishment or death. Bella knew that if she did anything other than stand there quietly, she would have been hurt.”

Rage swelled within me, but it was drowned by confusion. “Why would she stay with them? Carlisle said Aro gave her the choice to leave if she wanted. I heard him promise it on the phone.”

Now Alice spoke up. “Because she believes she has no where else to go. And she probably feels indebted to them for saving her life and changing her.”

Emmett frowned, while agony lashed at me. She actually believed me when I said she was no good for me, I thought painfully. And now she’s stuck with the Volturi.

Emmett didn’t know what I had told her though. “Why wouldn’t she have come to us? We would have taken her in without a problem. Carlisle offered when she called him.”

Alice’s eyes narrowed and she fixed her murderous gaze on me. “Why don’t you tell them all what you said to Bella right before we left? I’m pretty sure that played a larger role than any fear of getting in trouble for her.”

Now the gazes of my two brothers were on me, intense and unwavering. I knew I would have to answer their questions, and their thoughts weren’t making it any easier. They were both suspicious and curious, and didn’t plan on letting me leave without answering.

“I told Bella that I didn’t want her to come with us,” I whispered, my voice almost inaudible even to us. I kept my face blank, my voice unwavering. The look on Alice’s face made me go on. “I told her…I told her I didn’t want her at all.” I closed my eyes, waves of pain trying to bring me down.

"What?" Emmett growled. How could you do that to her? She loved you, no matter how unbelievable that is. And you told her you didn't love her? He was definetly much angrier than Jasper.

"I can understand why you did it I guess, but that doesn't make it right. And now Bella's working for the Volturi because that's porbably the only place she feels she can go," Jasper said, his quiet voice drifting on the wind. But you should have felt the pain and confusion coming from her Edward. It's almost as if she's subconsciously aware that you lied to her, but she hasn't accepted it yet.

I stared at him. Before I could say anything, however, Alice was pulled into a strong vision. I watched it all play out in her head, horror mounting through me. She looked at me with fearful eyes.

"We need to go now," she whispered in a hard yet afraid voice. I nodded, looking through the trees. Traces of Bella's scent still lingered in the air. I would use them to find her.

I had to before it was too late.
