Chapter 18

After running for about ten minutes, Jane stopped, halting us also. We looked around, confused as to why we all had stopped. There was nothing here except trees and darkness.

“Why are they following us?” she hissed, glaring behind us. We all turned, and could smell the Cullens coming. I stiffened, knowing that now Jane was going to lose her temper.

“Maybe they need to go this way to get to wherever they’re going,” I offered unhelpfully, knowing that it wasn’t the truth. Jane just rolled her eyes at me.

“Whatever the reason, I told them to stay out of our way. Now I’ll have no choice but to—“

I dove into her, quickly pulling her down. Over us, a dark shape dove into the ground, snarling viciously. He jumped back up, glaring at us with glowing red eyes, much like mine when I had first been changed.

Jane didn’t give him another chance to attack. As soon as she stood, he was on the ground, writhing in agony. His eyes were closed tightly in pain, his short brown hair shuddering as he shook. I watched passively, no showing my distaste for her ability.

Suddenly, I was aware of more shapes coming towards us. I snarled fiercely, grabbing another newborn—this one a blonde female—by the arm and quickly yanking it off. She screamed in pain, but I silenced her by grabbing her neck and pulling. Her head went flying off her shoulders, and I quickly finished dismembering her.

Felix and Demetri were also taking apart newborns, their faces void of any emotion. I knew that I shouldn’t care that I was killing people, since they would be dead if they hadn’t been changed. But I still felt a small tug in my stomach.

Jane was finishing tearing apart her victim, and she threw something at me quickly. I caught it, and recognized that it was a lighter. I piled all of the remains into a pile, got some dry wood and lit it on fire.

This was apart of the plan Aro had given us. Since I was still a newborn, I still had trouble going against my instincts so I just had to try and get rid of the vampires killed, though I still had to fight.

So, with a bright fire burning behind me, I quickly grabbed another vampire and started fighting him. He looked about my age, and had long blond hair and vivid red eyes, though not as bright as many of the other newborns. I guessed that he was a little over a year old.

I growled in frustration as he blocked all of my attacks. He snapped at me in response, and I took the opportunity carefully. Grabbing his exposed neck, I tugged hard.

His head came off, and I threw it into the fire, soon followed by the rest of his body. As I glanced around, I noticed a single tormented face. It was a girl younger than the rest, with short dark hair. She was maybe fifteen. She was staring at the fire in horror, and I realized she had cared for the person I just destroyed.

She finally met my gaze, and my power told me she was furious before it even showed on her face. With an enraged howl, she dove at me and tried to rip me apart. I grabbed her wrists in a restraining way, holding her away from me.

“You…you killed him!” she screeched. “You killed Riley! You killed him!” I could see she was close to breaking down, so I did nothing. Finally, she started to dry sob, still muttering about Riley.

“Was he your leader?” I asked gently, still holding her back. She shook her head slightly, too grief stricken to really answer. “Can you tell me who your master is then?”

She sniffed. “None of us know. All Riley said was that he was carrying out her orders, and that she would follow us after we came here to get a human girl.”

I let go of her, and she did nothing. I knew that she was too spent to fight now, so I turned my back to her and gazed into the dark trees, searching for the shape I now knew was coming.

There. A flash of red in the trees. I glanced back at the others, and saw they were still fighting and destroying the newborns, multiple at a time. I could tell Jane was truly enjoying herself. None of them would notice if I vanished. Not yet, anyway.

I carefully stepped into the dark trees, scanning the space around me carefully with wary eyes, watching for the flash of red fire that would alert me to Victoria’s presence.

A faint footstep was made a few feet to my left, and I spun around to see Victoria standing in front of me, smiling menacingly at me. She looked as I remembered from my hazy human memories; a distinct feline quality that was proved with her every movement.

“So Bella Swan, how did you like my little accident a few weeks ago? I am sorry about your father though. You were the only one who was supposed to die,” she teased. I stiffened at her voice. It was high pitched, like the whiny girls on TV.

Without giving me a chance to reply, she dove at me, pushing me hard into the ground.
