Chapter 2

I felt myself starting to slowly drift back into consciousness. I could hear a steady beating sound, and realized I was in a hospital.

I slowly opened my eyes to see a bright light shining down on me. I looked away, and saw I was in a plain white room with a small window with the curtains drawn over it. No light was coming through, so I assumed it was nighttime.

There were a lot of tubes sticking out of me. I felt myself starting to choke as I tried to breathe, and felt something in the way. A man came in, but I didn’t notice who he was. I was choking too much.

I felt him ease the tube out of my mouth, and I could suddenly breathe again. I took in large gulps of air before looking at the doctor. My eyes went wide. It was one of the most handsome people I had ever seen. He had short black hair. His skin was pale, yet with a tan, as if he hadn’t gone out in the sun in years. He smiled at me, revealing perfect white teeth. His crimson eyes twinkled as he looked at my shock.

Fear coursed through me. This wasn’t a vegetarian like they were, this was a true monster. A vampire that drank human blood. He seemed to notice my fear, and he chuckled.

“Don’t worry, Bella, I’m not going to hurt you. My job is just to take you to my masters. My name is Demetri, by the way.” He grinned.

“Who are your masters?” I whispered. I felt feel stabbing through me. The car accident had been dangerous, but this…

I gasped. “The car accident! What happened to everyone?”

Demetri’s smile faded. “I’m sorry, Bella, you are the only survivor. None of your peers were hurt, though,” he told me quietly. I gasped, tears forming in my eyes.

Oh no, Charlie, and those EMS workers. All they had been trying to do was help me, and now they were gone.

“For your first question, though…” he trailed off before looking at me intently. “Have you ever heard of the Volturi?”

His words brought back painful memories of one of the worst days of my life. I took a deep breath.

“What is a Volturi?” I demanded. “The Volturi are a family. A very old, very powerful family of our kind. They are the closest thing our world has to a royal family, I suppose. Carlisle lived with them briefly in his early years, in Italy, before he settled in America.

“Anyway, you don’t provoke the Volturi. Not unless you want to die, or whatever it is we do.” He explained to me.

The memory brought stabbing pain to my chest, but I didn’t let it show. “Yes, I have heard of the Volturi,” I said quietly. He nodded.

“What do you know about them?” He asked distantly.

“Only that they are an old, powerful family—the royal family of the vampire world,” I said, looking at him. He was quiet, until he suddenly smiled down on me.

“Well, it seems you are even better informed than we were made to believe,” he muttered.

“What?” I asked.

He looked down at me. There was a small amount of pity in his gaze, but it was inhuman. Almost like he was giving pity to an animal.

“There is one law that has to followed in our world. No human is allowed to know our secrets, and you seem to know quite a lot of them.” He informed me in a clear voice.

I felt the breath painfully leave my chest. I had broken the law, and I was just a human—a meal to this person. He could kill me if he wanted to right now. I couldn’t fight back, even if I were healthy. As it was, I felt tight bandages wrapped around my chest, gauze on my legs, and wrapping around my neck and other area’s of my skin. I realized that I had lots of burn marks, and that was why I was so wrapped up.

He seemed to notice my panic. “Don’t worry. Like I said before, I am not going to harm you. I am taking you to Italy, instead.”

“Italy?” I asked.

“That is where Volterra is. It is where the Volturi live, actually. My masters would like to meet you. You see, they are very interested in you, Isabella.” He told me.

My head was swimming. Why would the leaders of a powerful coven be interested in me? I couldn’t do anything that was special. I repeated my confusion to Demetri, who laughed.

“Actually, you are special. It seems that you can block mental powers. That is very rare for a human.” He told me. As he finished speaking, another woman came into the room.

She was as beautiful as Rosalie. Her long, luscious brown hair cascaded down her back in perfect waves. Her figure was curvy and perfect. She was wearing a doctor’s outfit, just like Demetri. She had the same crimson eyes.

“So, are you getting our new member ready to go?” she asked in an alluring voice. He nodded.

“We just have to be very careful with her. She is heavily wounded from a car accident at her school. I only just made it in time to save her.” He said. She nodded.

“Well, the helicopter is here. It will take us to the airport, and then we can go back home.” She said, and then walked out the door. Demetri stared after her for a moment with a lustful expression, but didn’t say anything.

He came over to me, and started wheeling me away. He saw that I was going to ask, and he shushed me. He led me the helicopter, and put me. After the short trip to the airport, we boarded their privet jet and we off to Italy.
