“Ah, Jane, you have returned! And with everyone else still intact!” he cried out, clapping his chalky hands together happily. “This is most definitely wonderful. I suppose your mission went well?”

Jane smiled angelically at the ancient vampire standing before her. “Of course master. The newborns and their creator were dealt with. And we have brought you Carlisle Cullen’s…children.” She said the last word as if it was a private joke. Behind me, I heard Edward clench his teeth.

Aro beamed at her. “This is absolutely wonderful!” He turned to Edward. “You must tell me how my dear Carlisle is doing. I have missed him in the past few centuries.”

Edward chuckled. “Carlisle is doing quite well, actually. He decided to come and visit you, actually. We just came with your guard a little earlier.” Something in his voice changed slightly when he said your guard, almost rebellious. I instantly realized he hated me belonging to someone without my will.

Aro smiled fondly at him. “That is very kind of him. I have missed his company, and his odd viewpoint of how he thinks we should live. It seems he has converted you to his lifestyle as well?”

Edward nodded, and I realized he was acting as spokesperson for his family, carefully reading everyone’s mind. “None of us wanted the debt of human blood on our hands,” he said, more quietly this time. I knew he was thinking of the past he had had in his rebellious years, the people he had killed.

Aro nodded to me. “Bella here seemed to have the same sentiments. She’s never killed a single human.” He sighed in resignation. “No matter how much we try to tempt her, she’s managed to not give in. My brothers and I are trying to figure out why. We believe it’s mostly that she knew what was happening.”

I stiffened and stared at Aro. They had been trying to figure me out, and didn’t tell me or question me at all? And tempting me? Is that why Heidi had been made to take me to that bar? I remembered how reluctant she seemed that night, and realized she didn’t want to hurt me while testing me. She actually did worry about me, much like an older sister.

Annoyance seemed to pulse through me, and I swear I saw Jasper try to stifle a grin out of the corner of my eye. I was glad that he at least found me having to try even harder than necessary for any newborn amusing, because I didn’t.

“It’s good that she’s strong, then, isn’t it?” Alice said quietly, filling in the stressful silence. My eyes widened as I looked to her. This is the first time she had talked since we had got to Italy, and I feared everyone’s reaction to her. Knowing the future….it was truly a unique gift, one that would be greatly coveted.

Aro nodded. “It makes having to train her much easier than it is for a normal newborn. We don’t have to worry about her suddenly rampaging through Volterra and exposing our secrets. It would be a waste to have to get rid of her, with a power like she has.”

I made a face at him. “I’m not that unique. Several others have people with gifts similar to mine. They just don’t have as concentrated as I do.”

“Nor as powerful,” Aro reminded me. I shrugged.

Edward’s eyes widened as he gleaned my power from Aro’s thoughts. He turned sharply to me, shock mainly present on his face. My gift wasn’t that great, was it? Or did Aro think something else?

“What?” I asked innocently. He didn’t reply; instead, seemed to search my face for something. I felt rightness in being able to see him, and almost wished we were alone so we could talk. But we weren’t, and I had to focus on the situation at hand.

Warily, I turned to Aro who seemed somewhat smug. I realized he was plotting an idea, and knew it had to do with touching one of the Cullens.

“Dear me, how terribly rude I have been!” Aro exclaimed, gliding forward gracefully. “I haven’t introduced myself properly, or my guards, have I? Though I am sure you got to know each other on the way back.

“I am Aro, and this is Isabella,” he said, placing his hand on my shoulder, “Jane, Demetri and Felix. They are the people I sometimes send out for dealing with problems around the world.”

Edward nodded, his face like a stone, knowing Aro’s ply as soon as he thought it. “I am Edward, and this is Alice, Jasper and Emmett,” finished, waving his hands towards his siblings.

Aro smiled, and lightly touched Edward’s shoulder, instantly gaining thoughts from him. “It truly is a pleasure to meet you all. I hope that you can stay for awhile. It would be nice to have guests here in Volterra.”

I took a quiet, deep breath as Aro gained everything that Edward ever thought of, and what the people around him thought. I didn’t want to have this happen, but I had to let it now. No use getting myself in trouble over the inevitable.

Edward didn’t seem too happy, though.
