Chapter 4

“Carlisle,” I said in relief. I never knew that such relief could come from hearing a voice. I felt safe, as if he could stop whatever bad was out there.

“Bella?” He said in alarm. “What are you doing in Italy with the Volturi?” He sounded urgent, and I heard voices in the background gasp. I could even hear Emmett going ‘What the hell!’

“I was in a really bad car accident, and they were there. They took me to Italy to see Aro,” I relied simply. There was a pause, and then Carlisle’s voice turned worried.

“Are you alright? How bad was the accident?”

“Well, at first, I only had broken ribs, and maybe my hip. But then the car exploded, and well, I was right next to it. All of the EMS workers were killed. And Charlie,” I added, my voice breaking. I felt my eyes blurring again, and I took a deep breath to try and calm myself down.

“Oh Bella, I’m so sorry,” he whispered. He sounded like he actually meant it, too. I realized that even if he didn’t care anymore, some of the family did. Then, his voice took a more serious note. “Are they planning to change you?”

“Yes, they are. They said that they are interested in my immunity to some powers right now, and wonder what they will be like when I am a vampire,” I said.

“How did they find out about you? Did you tell them?”

I laughed. “No, I didn’t tell them. Victoria did. Apparently she came here a few months ago. Aro learned it all from her.”

There was a longer pause on the other side of the line. Finally, Carlisle spoke. “Bella, can you put Aro on the line for me?” There was a tone to his voice that sent shivers down my spine. He clearly wasn’t happy.

“Um, alright,” I said. I looked up to see Aro already walking in. He took the phone from me, and started to talk in a low voice, too low for me too hear. He seemed happy to be talking to Carlisle, but soon he seemed annoyed. It looked like Carlisle was arguing with him, and he didn’t like it. Finally, Aro handed the phone to me and left the room quickly

“Carlisle?” I asked.

“Bella. I’m so sorry,” he said quietly. I was confused; what did he have to be sorry for? I was being changed; it would have happened sooner or later if they had stayed.

“What for—“ I was interrupted by a loud growl on his side. I winced as it came through the phone.

“SHE’S WHERE!” Edwards’s voice rang with fury. Apparently, even though he didn’t love or care about me any more, he still didn’t want me changed. It seemed that he didn’t even want me existing longer than necessary. That hurt my already dead heart.

“Edward, calm down. She’s on the phone right now! They haven’t changed—“ His calm voice was cut off by a loud snap, and the sound of boulders crashing into each other. “Get Jasper in here Alice,” Carlisle sighed.

I couldn’t help but voice my question. “What’s wrong? The Volturi are changing me, so what. It’s either that or die because I broke their laws! And I didn’t even get the choice!” I was close to losing it again. I had been through too much in the past few days to be calm.

Carlisle seemed to sense my distress. “It’s going to be alright Bella. Calm down now, okay? Nothing bad is going to happen,” He said in a slow, even voice, as if he was talking to a child.

I could hear a loud argument in the background. Carlisle paused, and seemed to be listening to the unintelligible growling. I felt the hole in my heart get bigger as I heard Edward. Even now, when I was so close to dieing, I felt the pain of his absence.

I could tell Carlisle was trying to calm his children down, speaking in a fast voice that I couldn’t hear.

“Um, is everything okay?” I said uncertainly. I didn’t want to be the cause of even more discord in their family. After my birthday….I winced as my thoughts went into forbidden areas.

“It’s all alright. They all were just having a temper tantrum,” He said. I could tell he was saying it for my benefit as much as theirs. I heard some angry huffs, and I cracked a smile.

Then his voice turned serious. “Bella, do you realize what the Volturi’s eating habits are?”

“Yes, but I don’t intend to follow it. I will not kill innocent humans, even if it is the only food offered to me,” I vowed. I heard Aro grunt in annoyance outside the door.

Carlisle’s reply was uncertain. “I don’t know if they will give you that choice, Bella,” he told me. I didn’t reply, and Aro came in. I gave him the phone.

“It was so nice to hear from you again, my old friend. Maybe you can come and visit Isabella when she has been changed. I hope to hear from you soon!” He said in a cheerful voice, and I wondered if he was always to optimistic. He defiantly acted like it.

He smiled as Carlisle replied. “Yes, of course! Good bye!” He hung up the phone, and turned to me.

“Do you really think you will be able to not drink human blood? I will give you the choice, but I will not have any member of my guard help you. You will have to be able to keep to that commitment on your own,” he warned. I nodded.

“Well then, we must get down to business!” He said, and grabbed the end of the bed I was lying on. “Well, when you are changed, you won’t need this anymore!” He said jokingly. I nodded. That might be one of the few things I would like about living here. Being able to choose where I go.

He wheeled me into a dark room, and flipped on the light. It was actually a very well decorated room. The walls were bare stone, matching the rest of the castle, as was the floor. There was a large bed that was a deep blue, and matching chairs and rugs. There was a wardrobe in the corner.

Two of his guards followed us. One was Heidi, and another one that looked similar to Demetri, except he had dark, wavy hair. Heidi picked me up and set me on the bed.

‘Isabella, this is Heidi, who I believe you already met,” Aro said. Heidi nodded at him. “And this is Felix. They will watch over you when you change.” I nodded and looked at Felix. He had an amused look on his face.

Aro nodded to Heidi, and she walked over to me and brushed the hair from my neck. “Good luck,” she murmured before biting down on my neck. I felt her cool hands rub my face as the fire started, and I lost myself in its inferno.
