I couldn’t help but feel excited. I mean, I was getting to fight a bunch of leeches!

After spending all this time NOT being able to rip the Cullen’s apart, these newborns were exactly what I needed.

Pay attention guys. I can smell them coming… Sam warned us, looking towards the thick forest ahead of us.

Ugh! They smell even worse than the Cullen’s! Embry’s thoughts exclaimed.

I barked a laugh. Ew, you’re right. It’s very disgusting.

I still can’t believe we’re doing this all for Bella, Leah complained. She’s just going to break Jake’s heart some more. Like someone did to me.

I growled. I couldn’t believe she was still mad at Sam, even when she knew the whole story. And that she would be such a bitch about Bella.

Bella’s a really great person, and she’s Jake’s best friend! That’s why we’re doing this. And we’re the protectors. This is what we do. I snarled at her.

God, Quil, it sounds like you’re practically in love with her! Leah sneered.

I growled, baring my teeth. Why not, she’s a whole lot nicer than you. I bet I would if I didn’t have Claire.

Leah laughed cruelly in her mind. Oh, right, Claire the two-year old and Quil the pedophile, what a great couple.

QUIL! LEAH! Come on, we can’t fight with each other. Jared told us, always the peace maker.

Here they come. Sam thought grimly.

I turned my massive head back towards the trees. The seconds ticked by slowly. The sickly-sweet scent came even closer. I held my breath, waiting for them to come into sight.

One moment, we all were still, hardly breathing, waiting for our enemies to come into view, and the next, chaos.

The newborns, eyes blood red, sprung out from the trees, their skin sparkling brightly in the sunshine.

My attacker, a girl around 16 or so, came flying at me. I smiled grimly before ripping her to shreds.

Later...

I lay on the soft grass, trying to recover. I had a few deep scratches, but nothing to bad.

“Great job, guys.” Sam told us, his normally calm face grinning like mad. “Hey, where’s Leah?”

I looked around. There was Paul and Jared, both soaking up the warm sun, there was Sam, standing up with a look of concern on his face. Embry sat next to me, his nose wrinkled from the smell of the burning vampires.

The Cullen’s were a few yards away, on the other side of the clearing, talking amongst themselves.

A high pitched growl, filled with terror, sounded in the forest. Jake, who was right by Sam, phased and raced towards it.

Sam and Paul both immediately copied him; I followed after sharing a puzzled glance with Embry. I ran after them and came to a small clearing where Leah about to be attacked by a newborn.

The leech started to jump at her, and Jake flung himself between them, only to be crushed by the newborns strength.

Sam - help him – Both I shouted at Sam through my mind.

Sam roared and threw himself into the fight, ripping the bloodsuckers head off with a crunching sound. I phased back, as did Jacob.

Jake moaned weakly, lying on the ground. “Sam…”

“Hey, Jacob, it’s okay, you’re gonna be fine!” I assured him as I rushed over. “What do we do?” I asked, turning to Sam.

The head vampire, Carlisle, burst into the clearing. “Don’t move him. He’s been injured very badly. He needs medical attention.”

I growled as the leech stepped closer to Jake.

“Don’t worry. I won’t hurt him, I swear. But if he doesn’t get his bones fixed now, he’s going to be in even more pain later.” The bloodsucker said his voice persuasive.

“Go ahead. But we’re watching.” Sam said. “Quil let him. Step away from Jake.”

I reluctantly moved out of Dr. Vamp’s way.

His white hands moved quickly, and merely seconds later he looked up at Sam. “We need to re-break his leg. It’s healing too quickly in the wrong way.”

“No!” I cried. Why the hell should we do that?

“Quil…calm down. You need to let Cullen help Jake.” Paul told me. I gritted my teeth and took a deep breath.

Jacob screamed, his face twisted in agony as the bloodsucker cracked his leg.

“There. He should heal all right, but he needs to go home and lay down for a few days.” Cullen told us, his tone businesslike.

Jared came running into the clearing, human. “Whoa! What the hell happened?” Jared exclaimed.

“I’ll fill you in later. Take Jacob back to Billy’s, and make sure he gets to sleep. Stay there with him, alright?” Sam told Paul and Jared.

“Yeah, I got it.” Jared said, phasing.

Paul gently lifted Jake up onto Jared’s back, worry on his face. Paul, caring about someone else? That’s a first.

He phased too, and the two of them ran slowly away in the direction on La Push.

“Come on; let’s get back to the clearing.” We trooped back to the main clearing, where Seth had joined us and the tower of dead leeches burned acidly.

“Quil, man, what happened?” Embry asked me, his face full of worry.

I explained to him about how Leah almost became newborn food, and how Jake was kind of hurt and all.

The little psychic leech danced over to us. “They’re coming.”

Sam groaned. “Guys, you know the Volturi, right? Jake and I told you about them awhile ago. Well, they’ve decided to come and check out the newborn situation. So, we really have to leave.”

Ugh. More leeches!

We all phased and rushed off, leaving a waving Alice. I had to laugh. That Cullen wasn’t that bad. She was starting to grow on me.

Quil! Man, how could you think that? She’s a filthy leech! Seth asked me.

Come on, Seth. She’s pretty nice, when you think of it. But still, Quil, ugh. LEECH LOVER! Embry said, laughing. Soon the whole pack (with the exception of Jake and Sam) started cracking up.

I smiled a wolf-y grin. Yeah, I guess I kind of was. Not kind of, Quil. You ARE. Jared informed me, still laughing.

We reached Emily’s house and phased back. “Where’s Jake? What happened?” Her kind face was concerned.

“He’s okay, Em. He just had a little accident. But we’re all good now. Do you have any muffins?” I asked.

“Don’t worry, Quil. There’s some on the table.” Emily answered. Everyone laughed.

“Damn, Quil. You eat more than any of us!” Sam said before gathering Emily in his arms.

“Ugh. Get a room.” Seth, who was still fourteen, muttered.

As I started to head inside, Embry grabbed by arm. "Come on, muffin boy. We have to go see Jake."

I sighed turned around, silently saying goodbye to my sweet muffins.

Even when I was hungry, and Emily had some fresh muffins, I had to remember; friends first, food later.
