Lizzy POV Edward Masen, Edward, answer me! EDWARD!!!

I sighed. He didn’t hear me. If he had heard me, he would have sent a thought back by now. It was no use. I sighed again because I knew that this meant I would have to make actual contact now.

I wiped off my mouth, thinking that the blood of humans might seem a little offensive to my brother and his ‘vegetarian’ family of vampires. I sighed again. I’d been trying to contact Edward all day so that I wouldn’t need to go to his house just yet, and that was just where I was headed now.

I got up off the log I’d just been sitting on and wiped off the back of my dark Volturi cloak, though it wasn’t dirty. I took off running through the night, toward where I knew was Edward’s house. It was the middle of the night but I knew no one in that house would be sleeping.

Carlisle POV

“Edward, Alice,” I said in a voice that a human would use in regular conversation.

My two ‘adopted children’ walked in through the large oak door of my study. Alice was staring Edward and he was shaking his head looking frustrated, they were no doubt carrying on a conversation in their minds.

“Would you care to tell me what’s going on?” I said in a calm voice.

Alice bit her lip and looked up at Edward, encouraging him to answer.

Edward sighed, “My sister is coming,” he said, his brow furrowed.

Then Alice spoke, “She’s from the Volturi and is coming here on the job of coming to see if Bella’s changed, she’s running toward the house now, she’ll arrive in two minutes, she can-.” Edward cut her off and finished her sentence.

“She can read minds,” he said, “She’s been trying to contact me all day.”

“Then let us welcome her,” I said, smiling warmly.

Then, the door bell rang.

Lizzy POV

My brother answered the door. “Edward!” I nearly screeched, throwing my self in to his arms, embracing him in a too-tight hold.

“Lizzy, ouch!” he said. I loosened my grip, embarrassed when I realized that I was stronger than him because I drank human blood.

“Edward,” I said again, “I’ve missed you!” I gave him a kiss on the cheek.

Edward gently pulled away, leaving an inch between us now. “I would’ve missed you but I thought you were dead 100 years ago,” he said.

“So,” I said, straightening up, “Introduce me to your family, Edward, don’t be rude.”

Edward chuckled and said, “Same as you were 100 years ago, Lizzy,” ruffling my hair.

“Alice, Jasper, Rosalie, Emmett, Carlisle, Esme,” Edward said. I really had missed him; he’d ‘died’ in 1918, along with my parents, so I had had to be in an orphanage for six years, then I’d ‘died’. I’d been alone as a vampire for 31 years, without purpose, until the Volturi found me and, intrigued by my gift, had accepted me into their ‘family’, but that was in 1956.

I’d been so lost in thought that I hadn’t realized six figures appear at the door next to Edward. Most of them were smiling warmly, except for a beautiful blond girl, who was looking at me suspiciously.

A short girl with pixie-short black hair came up to shake my hand, “I’m Alice, so nice to meet you,” she said.

Next a taller boy with sandy blond hair came up, introducing himself as Jasper, and for some reason, though seconds ago I’d felt apprehensive, I felt calmed. After him another blond man shook my hand firmly and introduce him self as Dr. Carlisle Cullen, then he motioned toward a brown haired, motherly woman, introducing her as his wife, Esme. Then he motioned toward the blond girl, calling her Rosalie, who simply nodded in my direction, and last he motioned toward a big, burly, curly-haired, dimpled, smiling boy, calling him Emmett. I waved at them all, smiling, I liked them.

Lizzy, get your job done and come home, we all miss you terribly. Aro thought (I could ‘hear’ from long distances). Lizzy, is she changed yet? Just come home, if they’re giving you too much trouble, kill the girl and come home, you’re worrying us. I almost laughed when I thought of Caius being worried. Jane is lonely, Alec is gone and she has nothing to do...at least call…come home, Elizabeth, come home, we’re worried your job done and come home!

“I know, Aro!” I said aloud, quickly covering my mouth, embarrassed that I’d answered his pestering thoughts aloud.

I apologized, and everyone chuckled warmly, but I could feel a tense fog in the air, I knew I shouldn’t have said his name. I’d wanted to save my real duty for last. But now that the cat was out of the bag, (I had fun imagining Aro as a disgruntled cat) I figured I might as well get to it.

I sighed and looked down. “You all know why I’m here,” I said,” You’re lucky they sent me, though, because I won’t kill her, I simply ask that you change her, that’s all, and then I’ll leave.”

I’m sorry, Edward, but it’s the only way that it can be. I thought to him. If there was any way I could go back home, with her still alive, a way where they wouldn’t kill me if she wasn’t changed, I would do it, but there just isn’t another path. Again, I’m-

Edward cut me off with his thoughts.

It’s OK, Liz, We’ll find a way. It’ll be OK, it’ll be OK.

It sounded like Edward was angry and a quick look at his face and an analysis of what he’d said confirmed that hypothesis.

For one, he was pinching the bridge of his nose, like he’d always done when he was human and was trying to calm his temper. And the second thing that tipped me off was that he’d said ‘it’s OK Liz’. Edward always called me Lizzy, unless he was angry with me or worried about me, like how Aro called me Elizabeth when he was angry or worried.

I looked down, ashamed, sorry that I had to put him in this situation. I was glad I couldn’t cry, because, if I could, I’d be crying right now, only making his situation worse.
