“Who?” demanded the female who stood behind me. I turned to face her. She was striking, even for a vampire, with angular face and blond hair that waved down to the middle of her back. Beside her was a tall, intimidating male.

“It's Italian,” whispered the smaller female behind Jacob, “for the Will of Death.” I nodded. I shot Jacob a look, he was still tensed up. I assumed it was due to the close proximity of so many vampires. He tried to deftly maneuver himself out of their protective sphere, but to no avail. They closed ranks around him. Watching their faces, I realized it was not the werewolf they feared, but me.

“They're here for Bella,” said Jacob defensively. “That's why we came here Alice!” He was shouting now. The blond male stepped in front of the smallest vampire, who was presumably Alice, in a protective gesture.

“Why would they be after Bella?” demanded Alice. Her voice dripped with bitterness for Jacob.

“I don't know!” he replied, “Ask her!” He pointed at me. His voice and his finger spewed accusations. All eyes were on me. I shrank back from all the attention.

“They're assassins,” I said. “Someone sent them to kill Bella.”

“The Volturi?” said the blond female. She had an edge of fear to her voice. They all made eye contact.

“Rosalie,” hissed Alice, effectively silencing all talk of the Volturi.

“I don't know,” I admitted. “Their leader, Ambrosi, he isn't going to stop until he kills Bella.”

“Why would someone want to kill Bella,” asked Rosalie quieter now. “She's only human.” She said this with disgust in her voice, as if being human made her lesser somehow.

“I don't know that either. I was hired to tell them where Bella was. I wasn't privy to the whole master plan.”

“Why are you here if you are the one that told them where to find her?” asked Alice, her tone was serious, accusing.

“I didn't have a choice,” I said quietly. “Ambrosi can be very... persuasive.”

“We better take her to Carlisle,” said Alice to the others. I looked at Jacob, my heart skipping a beat. Despite his attempt to kill me and his obvious contempt for my kind, I didn't want to be separated from him. He caught my gaze and a slow smile crossed his face.

“What about him?” asked the male next to Alice.

“Guess we have to bring him,” she replied.

They led us through the forest. Jacob stayed next to me, with the other vampires surrounding us. He was closer to me than he had been before, almost touching. I realized suddenly that his woodsy odor didn't burn my nose or tickle my throat. I was almost pleasant. Reaching out, I brushed his hand with my fingertips. It was like fire on my icy skin, teetering on the edge of excruciating and delicious. Jacob leaned toward me. I braced myself.

“Don't ever touch me again, bloodsucker,” he hissed.

I was on fire. Rage and embarrassment screamed through me. Tightening my hand into a fist, I punched Jacob as hard as I could in the shoulder.
