He growled at me. Rosalie laughed. Everyone stopped. If there was any blood left in my body it would all have rushed to my face.

“Don't you think we should hurry?” I said, fighting to keep my voice even. I felt emotion welling up in me again, threatening to spill out as humanly tears. Alice smiled, her teeth glittering. She nodded.

“Follow me.” Then, in a blur she took off into the woods. I ran to follow her. We raced through the trees. I was hoping that Jacob couldn't keep up. I wanted to get as far away from him as possible. I considered the possibility of dropping him off a very tall cliff. We reached a large white house with a wrap around porch. It overlooked a large meadow-like yard. We all slowed to a walk and I saw four more people standing in front of the house waiting for us.

“You live here?” I gasped. I'd never seen anything so spectacular, let alone something owned by vampires. Every vampire I'd ever met either lived in lavish underground palaces, like the Volturi, which reminded me of painted caves, or they were nomadic, moving from place to place, hunting the humans.

“Yep,” replied Alice. “Home sweet home.” She smiled as she said this. The other people were coming to meet us. I recognized Bella instantly. She was warm, even with the concerned look on her face. Her eyes went instantly behind us. I turned and saw Jacob loping toward us across the lawn. His eyes were sad, and a little angry. They have history, I thought to myself. Another look at Bella confirmed it. She had tears rolling down her cheeks.

“I'm Carlisle Cullen,” said the tall blond man. “You've already met Alice, Jasper, Rosalie, and Emmett.” He indicated each person as he said their names. “This is Esme, my wife, and Edward and Bella.”

“I'm Lilly Beckett,” I said, tried to be as polite as possible. The one called Edward was staring at me intently. His eyes got wide and he tightened his grip on Bella's shoulder. I saw Carlisle's eye flick sideways watching Edward's face. I knew the look on his face.

“You know why I'm here,” I said with all seriousness. Edward nodded wisely. “Then you know we don't have a minute to lose?” Again he nodded. I noticed everyone one staring and I laughed in spite of the tense atmosphere.

“Do you know when they'll attack?” he asked me, his voice muted. Bella clung tightly to his chest. The smell coming from her was delicious and I wondered to myself how they all kept from killing her right then and there. Edward heard this and glared at me. I quickly thought of something else, a smile crossing my face. I had no desire to taste her blood, a girl in love with a vampire, sought by the Volontà della Morte was certain to have very painful thoughts.

“We're going to have to find them, maybe talk to one of them,” said Edward.

“They won't ever tell us anything,” I replied.

“Oh, we have ways of making them talk.”
