When she stepped out, her eyes were curious, but not suspicious. I felt like the room was spinning, and the floor was slipping out from under me. I tried to speak, but my voice caught in my throat. I choked on the words and all the while Bella stared at me, her smiled frozen to her face.

“It'd be so easy,” hissed a tiny malicious voice buried deep in my head. “Rip out her throat and run away. So easy.” My fingers twitched in anticipation. The voice was burning in my brain and I took a step away from the smiling girl in front of me.

“Bella...” I managed to whisper. The voice was winning and suddenly I began to realize how wonderful she smelled. I bit hard into my lower lip and squeezed my eyes closed. She shifted, not understanding I needed distance from her. Stepping back again, I felt a stiff cold arm around my shoulder. Opening my eyes, I saw Edward was draped around Bella. He appeared loving, but I could feel him eying me. Alice had a friendly, but firm arm around me.

I knew Edward had heard my thoughts and I thanked him silently inside my mind. He eyed me for another second, then a slow smiled crossed his face. The voice in my head was silent, and the thirst was abated. Bella, oblivious of what had just taken place, snuggled into Edward's chest, still smiling that sweet smile.

“I was showing Lilly my dress,” she said. Edward smiled down at her, clutching her tightly to her chest. Alice had loosened her grip on me. An awkward silence crept into the room and settled around us.

“Lilly's going to help me downstairs,” said Alice finally, in a forced happy voice. I was grateful to be getting away from Bella and her sweet smelling blood, but also nervous about what Alice had planned.

Reading my thoughts again, Edward said, “Okay, we'll be down in just a second. Don't worry Lilly, Alice doesn't bite.” He smiled again. My stomach relaxed and I happily followed Alice out of the room. We waited until we were out of Bella's earshot before we started to speak.

“What happened?” she demanded. Her voice was shockingly cold for such a beautiful person.

“I don't know,” I admitted. I hung my head, embarrassed by my moment of weakness. “We were just talking and I got this urge. I almost couldn't control it. Oh Alice, if I'd...”

“You wouldn't have,” she replied, her voice a little softer. “Edward wouldn't have let you. But I'll tell you now that if you threaten Bella, he'll kill you.” Her voice was solid, but with a hint of regret. I felt my stomach bubble with nerves. We were at the bottom of the staircase and Alice turned toward me, her eyes full of emotion. She patted my arm reassuringly. I felt Edward and Bella coming down the stairs behind us. They were almost to the bottom when Carlisle came into the foyer. His face was torn with anger and sorrow.

“It's Tanya,” he whispered. “Her coven's been killed.”
