Jacob and I raced hand-in-hand back toward the Cullens. When we reached the meadow, I saw the family standing with the dark men that had attacked me. Ambrosi was no where to be seen. I let go of Jacob and ran toward Bella who was in the middle of the group. She didn't seem anxious or distressed in the least.

“What happened?” I cried. Grabbing for Bella's hands, I felt myself falling inside. She took hold of my outstretched hands and smiled.

“Sam and the others chased him off,” she said. Her smile widened.

“That means we get to have an engagement party!” cried Alice. Her face was lit up with excitement. “You're going to stay aren't you?”

“Um...” I trailed off, my mind wrought with confusion. Ambrosi wouldn't have given up. He wouldn't have left Bella alive.

The wolf man I took to be Sam, the leader said, “We killed three of them. The other four just took off.” He was smiling.

Everyone was smiling and happy.

And I was still confused.

Had that blow to the head done some permanent damage.

The next day passed in a blur. Everyone seemed to forget Ambrosi, the bargain on

Bella's head, and Tanya. While I was grateful for the last bit, I couldn't wrap my mind around it. I couldn't focus. Party guest came and went, they laughed, they had fun, and all the while I was lost in my own head. Toward the end of the day, Bella came to sit by me, draping an arm over my shoulder. She was grinning from ear to ear.

“Thank you Lilly,” she whispered in my ear. She leaned toward me, planting a kiss on my cheek. I brushed my hand across her cheek, and my nail nicked her pale skin. I pulled away, startled and embarrassed. She looked puzzled, she obviously hadn't felt anything. I leaned told her and returned her kiss, her blood brushing my lips.

I pulled back, licking the hot liquid. When it hit my tongue, I didn't feel the usual stab of pain, but instead a warmth in my brain. Then I saw it. Bella's entire future flashing before my eyes. I smiled at her and moved away, toward Jacob who was standing off on his own. When I reached him, I slid my hand into his.

“Hey dog-boy,” I whispered. “I've got a proposition for you.”

“What'd you have in mind bloodsucker?” He raised his eyebrows suggestively. I gave him a grim smile.

“Nothing like that,” I replied.

He leaned over and kissed me.

“Let's go then. This party isn't any fun.”
