“Tell me what you meant about Bella!” he yelled coming toward me. His skin seemed to bristle, like the fur of a dog. I tipped my head up to look at him. He was fuming, eyes blazing, hands shaking, furious with me.
“I don't get a minute to be relieved I didn't get eaten?” I asked, my voice surprisingly calm and even. This only made him more angry, which suited me fine as long as he wasn't a giant wolf. I lowered my hand and calmed my frazzled nerves. My entire being was shaking, inside and out. The fear was emptying, but in its place remained a cold anxiety.
“What the hell kind of bloodsucker are you?” he demanded, his tone low and biting. He was trying to make me angry. I could almost taste the resentment seeping out of his skin. I didn't respond for several minutes, and he was growing impatient. I sensed that he may at any moment become that giant wolf again, so I clamored to my feet.
“The kind of bloodsucker that prefers her head in its current position.” It was childish, but for good measure I stuck out my tongue. I looked away at the ground, my feet, anything but his glowering eyes. He ground his teeth together and bristled again.
“Bella?” he growled. “Tell me what you know about Bella!”
I refused to speak. This man, this monster was not someone I trusted or had an lingering desire to be around. He glared at me and took one menacing step forward. He was still bristling, his skin wavering between a solid mass and thousands of course hairs. I met his eyes, and saw no only anger, but the tiniest hint of fear. It couldn't be because of me, I thought, so it must be for her.
I gave in, “There are seven vampires hunting her while you sit here interrogating me. I was just on my way to warn her when you...” I trailed off. I didn't want to say the word attack, it sounded too formal for this situation and might incur his anger again. “detained me.” I finished lamely.
His expression went from angry to very grave. His skin grew pale and I feared he could vomit at any moment. I moved slowly, so as not to excite him, away from my position at the tree and started backing my way toward town. His eyes snapped up. He growled from low in his throat. I nearly jumped out of my skin.
“Why are you going that way?” he sounded suspicious. I stopped, and raged coursed through my body. I planted my hands on my hips and furrowed my eyebrows in as menacing an expression as I could muster.
“If you must know,” I said in as vicious a tone as I could manage, “I am going to steal a car because I'll never get there on time by foot.”
He stared at me, as if weighing my honesty. Then, “Okay, but I'm going with you.”
