“Three days, big deal,” my beloved had told me that day in the hospital. Three days were a verybig deal. As I knelt by her side laying my hand on her face, her screams grew worse and worse. She pleaded with me to make the pain stop, and I felt utterly helpless every time. On the third day, her screaming grew less agonizing. At around six thirty, she spoke clearly for the first time. Her voice was silky.

“What the…where am I?” she said. I was stunned; she didn’t know who I was. It felt like the dead space in my chest where my heart was had just ripped in two.

“Bella, do you…do you know who I am?”

“Um…no I don’t, sorry,” she said, “Do you by any chance know where I am?”

What had I done?

“You don’t remember anything…nothing about what happened or that ring on your finger?” I said, and my voice wavered when I told her about the ring.

“Oh, my…that’s definitely unexpected….but I’m sorry but I don’t remember anything…” she replied, still looking at the ring I had so lovingly put on her finger only a few days before.

“Isabella,” I said to her, and she looked up at me with a perplexed expression on the face she had dreamed about for years. “Isabella, my name is Edward Cullen. You moved to Forks three years ago. My family and I are vampires. You and I were married three days ago.” She gaped at me when I told her about our marriage. I looked at the floor, and continued.

“Bella, I’ve loved you since the day I first talked to you. You’re a vampire because I made you one. You wanted this life and I gave it to you. And if you don’t remember me, maybe you’ll remember someone else.” As if on cue, Alice, Jasper, Emmet, Rosalie, Esme, and Carlisle walked into my room.

“BELLA!!!!!” Alice shrieked. Then she ran over to Bella and gave her a hug.

ALICE ’S POV:

As soon as I stepped closer to Bella, my mind went blank, and then was filled with images of a meadow, followed by Jacob and Bella sitting on the grasses holding each others hands and talking.

“So you have taken care of your bloodsucker?” Jacob asked her.

Bella smiled at that, “Of course, Jake. See, I don’t have that ring on anymore…”

I could not believe what I saw. I turned to look at Edward, and he stumbled back onto his couch.

“Edward…” I started. He waved me off.

“Don’t, Alice. Just…don’t.” he whispered, his voice hoarse.

“So, um…can anyone explain to me what I’m doing here?” Bella asked to no one in particular.

“Umm…Carlisle?” I said.

He nodded. Then he explained all about what Edward hadn’t already said. I looked over at Edward again. He was still sitting on his couch with his head in his hands.

“So, Bella, I’m Alice. And I was thinking, maybe a little hunting might help your memory. Would you like to come with me?”

She nodded. “And um…heh…is he—err—Edward ok?”

Edward looked up at her. “Yea….yea I’m just fine…” he said, but his sarcasm was marred by his still hoarse voice. Bella didn’t look very convinced, but she still got up and went over to the door. I looked at Edward once more before heading downstairs with Bella.

EDWARD’S POV

I couldn’t believe what I had seen in Alice’s mind. How could Bella just forget about us? I paced in my room for awhile after they left. Then Carlisle came up and told me that I should go for a run, since it had always helped me before. So I went outside and started off into the woods. I remember when we first went to the meadow, how she was so much more beautiful than the landscape. I remembered her warm touch, but when I thought about how she was now, how her heart wouldn’t speed up when I touched her even in the slightest way…but now…now I didn’t mean anything to her. I never mean to run past her in the woods. She was alone, Alice was in the next valley over, and she was just standing there. I forgot about her forgetting me, and walked up behind her. I put my hands around her and kissed behind her ear.

“Hey,” I whispered. She let out a short scream as she jumped up.

“Bella, it’s me….DAMNIT!” I said after I remembered. When she turned around to look at me, I thought I saw a flicker of recognition in her eyes, but it was gone before I could really tell what it was.

“Why did you do that?” she asked. I looked down at my feet before looking her in the eye again.

“Because I thought you remembered me.”
