“Lily, Can you get the mail,” Cara’s thoughts interrupted mine. I hated that I could hear everyone’s thoughts around me. I still hadn’t mastered blocking them out.
“Ugg! I’m reading, Car!’ I sent that thought up to her mind. She knew I would get it, anyway. I left my book open and ran down the two flights of stairs to the mail box, which I had to unlock.
I didn’t even look at what I had in my hand until I was in Cara’s study on the second story of our mansion.
I quickly sorted through the mail. It contained two bills, which I threw at Cara who caught them before they even thought about hitting the ground, a magazine, a few junk and a very thick manila package addressed to me. I threw the magazine and junk mail into the waist basket as I left the room.
I headed back up the stairs to my library. I set the letter down on one of the mahogany tables and went to my “bed”-room. I found the CD I wanted and put it in my stereo then went back into my library. I could still here the music playing from in hear. Music helped clear my mind when I was stressed with the mind-noise of the humans in the area.
I flopped down into one of the chairs at one of the tables. I opened the package. It obviously was from my mother, whose messy scrawl I recognized anywhere. I tore it open, careful not to rip the objects inside. There was a fancy, thick invitation like thing and a folded letter. I opened the invitation first. It had very elegant writing on the expensive ivory paper.
You are cordially invited to celebrate
The wedding of
Isabella Marie Swan
Edward Anthony Masen Cullen
On August 13
That was all i read before I heard a soft thud, telling me that the invitation hit the floor. That’s in two days! I turned quickly to the other piece of paper that was in the package for an explanation as to why I was invited to my sister’s wedding.
Renee Swan Dwyer is my mother, I am her second daughter. I have and never will know my father; he was one of mom’s boyfriends after she left Charlie Swan, my sister Bella’s father. I was kept a secret from everyone when my mother gave me to her sister Cara. Aunt Cara was widowed, rich, and desperately wanted a child. My mother gave me to her because she did not have enough money to raise both Bella and I.
For the past 17 years I have lived in Northern Michigan in her three-story mansion.
When I was 10, Cara told me her greatest secret, she was a vampire. She was turned nearly 10 years before Renee gave me to her.
Cara had an unusual resistance to human blood, she could only drink animal blood, and she also could change her physical appearance, and others, at will. She grew very familiar to the humans we lived around.
When I was only 15, I was attacked by a vampire but narrowly escaped, so out of safety she changed me. I had always fainted at the sight and smell of blood, and strangely that nausea fallowed me into my new life.
Cara changed both our eye colors, and she aged herself so humans wouldn’t get suspicious. She turned my eyes a silvery grey, the original color, and hers was a light blue instead of the gold color we got from drinking the animal blood.
About a half a year after I was changed I developed the power to read the minds of people around me and put my own thoughts into other people’s minds. That is how we go undetected in Michigan.
My life was rather boring during the day. I went to school, got many stares and went home. I would spend my time by reading, drawing, or listening to music.
When night came I was a totally different person. I could be found on our roof or sitting in the grass simply laying there watching the moon and stars. When it was cloudy, which was most of the time, I would watch the forever changing black pearl-like clouds stretch across the skies. When it rained or storm I would dance the night away.
I enjoyed every moment I had to myself and the night. I would watch from the time the sun started to sink below the western horizon to the first rays of the morning sun shine in the eastern skies.
Every week I got either an e-mail or a letter from my mother Renee. Her letters she sent me where always updates, news about our family and her life. She sent me a letter about the happenings of her life once a week. She was so free spirited! In the letters she would babble on about Phil and herself. I certainly knew about my step-sister. I knew that her, my mother and I look very similar. We all have brown hair and heart shaped faces. The only difference between us was that both my mother and Bella have big chocolate brown eyes but mine where and have always been the grey Cara changed them to.
I’m so lonely down here alone when Phil is playing! I wish you lived down here with Phil and me in Florida! I’m thinking about asking Cara if you could come and live down here with us. I’ve told him about you and after he calmed down about this secret I kept he seemed really anxious to meet you. I think you would like it here in Florida. I swear you and Bella are so similar, both of you love the rain, clouds and the cool weather of the North!
By the way I would be so happy if you came to Bella’s wedding in Forks, Washington with Phil and I. That way I can have you meet Bella and Phil at the same time! I think its time for our secret to come out. I think you’d like Washington. It’s almost at the same as Michigan. You could meet the Cullen’s while your here. Please, please, please come! I’ll call Cara later to ask her if it’s okay.
Your loving mother,
I finished reading this and ran once more up to Cara’s study. I handed her the letter while I was jumping up and down.
“We’ll see,” She answered the question that was bubbling inside of me. “I’ll have to talk to Renee.”
I’ve been daydreaming about meeting my step-sister since I had learned about her. I called Renee later that day. Cara finally agreed to let me go after begging from both my mother and me. I was going to Washington to meet my sister!!!
