"Why are we even bothering to HAVE food, again?” she asked playfully. “Because your family and friends all eat,” he reminded her patiently, “and so do you. And I want to make sure you keep your strength up,” he finished, smirking.

Once again Edward must have been listening to Bella’s worried mumbling about Jacob as she slept. “Edward, you’ve been asking me that almost every day,” Bella replied, frustrated. “I’d feel a lot better if we could just not talk about it anymore.” It wasn’t as if she could help worrying. He’d disappeared without explanation a week ago. Billy had mentioned it to Charlie, unofficially, of course.
He nodded agreement, but his pained expression remained. Bella rolled her eyes. “What does Alice have in store for us today?” She found it easier to get her own mind off of Jacob than to distract Edward from him. And that was really saying something.
“She’s already sent the invitations, because she foresaw that you wouldn’t care what they looked like. I think this morning she was planning to ask you about food.” Edward grimaced. Food was disgusting. For some reason, watching Bella eat, as he was doing this morning, didn’t bother him. But the idea of having to smell food at his wedding wasn’t a pleasant one. Maybe Alice would let them eat outside? He made a note to ask.
Bella narrowed her eyes at him over her cereal bowl. “Why are we even bothering to HAVE food, again?” she asked playfully, ignoring his grimace. She couldn’t be sure, but she suspected he was still thinking about Jacob. Why couldn’t he just let it go? She rinsed out her bowl quickly.
“Because your family and friends all eat,” he reminded her patiently, “and so do you. And I want to make sure you keep your strength up,” he finished, smirking. That expression only lasted an instant, though, before he was frowning thoughtfully again. “Bella, are you SURE?”
“Would you please stop asking?” she whispered. “I’m sure.” She hated that her relationship with Jacob had caused Edward pain, and it bothered her that he thought about it so often.
She didn’t talk much on the way to his house. She noticed him glancing at her every so often. Finally he asked the inevitable question, and she thought she detected a hint of worry in his tone. “What are you thinking about?”
“Appetizers,” she answered honestly, pleased that his expression cleared. “If I think of something good before we get there, Alice will see it and we won’t have to have another marathon discussion about the wedding. The last one was awful. She was pushing pictures at me so fast I could barely see what I was pointing at.”
“About that,” he started. Then he frowned again and fell silent. Minutes passed. They were nearly to the house when he spoke again. “Are you certain this is what you want?” he asked again.
“Dammit, Edward! Yes! This is what I want. YOU are what I want! WHY is it so difficult for you to understand? If I had wanted to stay with Jake, I wouldn’t BE here right now. What more proof can I offer you?!” Bella felt first one tear and then another course down her cheek as the exasperation finally got the better of her.
Throughout this whole outburst, Edward simply stared at her, shocked. “I was only asking about those horrid gold tuxedos Alice said you agreed to,” he began hesitantly. “All this time, you’ve thought I was asking about Jacob?”
