Edward practically shoved me out the door after math. I didn’t know what to say, but I did know what to think.

What was that for? I asked

I don’t like the looks of the new kid, he seems really hostile.

He seems fine to me, and now he’s probably all creeped-out because you shoved me, incredibly quickly, out the door!

I’m sorry about that Liz, but like I said, I don’t like him.

Fine, apology accepted. I thought with a sigh.

Edward bent down and kissed me on the forehead.

“Thank you” He whispered in my ear.

With all of the new kid stuff settled for the moment, the car ride home was incredibly happy. Alice was already planning a party for my perfect score on my math exam. Bella agreed to help set up, but I demanded nothing too over the top. But, knowing Alice, I wasn’t going to get my wish. She would do what she wants.

We arrived home to a waiting Esme, who seemed more than overjoyed at my predicted ‘A’. I just wanted to go for a run. I haven’t been out in the woods on my own to run as I please in a while, and I was now granted that freedom.

I ran. I ran hard and fast, just for the fun of it. I loved the wind in my hair and the whooshing in my ears. I ran for a long time, but never tired. I only stopped running at top speed whenever I head a rustle in the bushes or the snap of a twig on the forest floor. I enjoyed the green canopy overhead which blocked the sun and the rain from ever touching me as I ran.

I was forced to slam on my breaks when someone stepped into my path, and I almost screamed because the movement surprised me so. I also jumped about three feet in the air at the sight of who it was. It was the new kid.

He had extremely light blonde hair, very pale skin, and weren’t his eyes just blue at school? Now they were green. He was wearing a white button down, long sleeve, dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up halfway up his forearm, and a pair of dark blue jeans and some sneakers that were mostly covered by the jeans. His face was what fascinated me most though, his now green eyes sparked brilliantly in contrast with his pale complexion. His smile was dazzling, he ad perfectly straight and white teeth, and his face was still somewhat rounded, indicating that he’s in between boy and man. His blonde hair was up in messy, short, spikes.

“Wow”, was all I could think.

“Hi, I don’t think I got a proper chance to introduce myself earlier,” He said flashing his dazzling smile, which I tried not to stare at, “I’m Lucas Starr.”

“Hi.” I said, still trying to get over his flawless features.

“Can I talk to you for a minute?” He asked.

I just nodded and he started walking, I followed. I didn’t know where we were going, but I was positive I would be able to find my way back. We walked for a while, and I felt myself getting antsy. I wanted to run more, I needed to run more. After that thought of my need to run, Lucas started sprinting, and then we were flying like I would be any other running session. Was Lucas a vampire? No, he couldn’t be, why would he be blushing if he was?

We flew into the middle of an extremely large clearing; I couldn’t recognize any of the area though. I thought I had explored the entire forests surrounding Forks. Oh well. It was beautiful, large trees that shaded the outskirts of the large area, a small group of saplings in the very middle of the clearing; it was nice and sunny… Wait, wasn’t it just raining?

“So, what do you want to talk about Lucas?” I asked, my mind finally returning to the reason he had brought me here.

“Oh… umm… well, I- I just don’t know how you stand it.” He said after a few attempts.

“Stand what? I’m not sure what you are talking about Lucas.” I really didn’t understand.

“How- How you live with them.” He said, he was obviously angry about the fact that this hadn’t gone as smoothly as he would have liked for him to ask me that question. He was pacing and talking with his hands a lot when they weren’t balled up into fists.

“With who?” I asked, attempting to sound like I had no idea to what he was talking about.

“You know exactly who I’m talking about! Your little family of vampires! Ugh, their scent is all over you, and you don’t seem to care at all! It’s like they don’t even bother you!” He was fuming now. I was so shocked by his outburst that I didn’t know what to say. He turned around and stared at me.

His eyes were now dark red, it scared me. I had never seen anyone, not even vampires have eyes that dark. I felt myself automatically take a tentative step backwards. I saw his eyes widen as I moved towards the opposite edge of the clearing to make a run for it. I did not want to see those red eyes any more.

Before I turned to run, thoughts invaded my mind.

Wait! Elizabeth, please don’t leave, I want to talk to you! I want to get to know you as a friend! I didn’t mean to scare you! Please, just stay and listen. I’m not going to ask you to hold my hand or anything like that. You can stay right on the very edge of the clearing if you want to.

I stopped. I knew I should not stay, that Luke wasn’t safe at the moment, but I couldn’t just leave. I wanted to hear what he had to say anyway, to find out what he is, and to find out how he knows about my family. So, I would stay, but only for a little while, while he explained himself.

He took a deep breath and started, “OK, well I should probably start at the very beginning, I’m a warlock. I was born in August seventh fourteen-sixty-two. My mother and father were both magical too. I was fifteen when I found out my first power; levitation.” He rose off the ground, “Both of my parents were overjoyed that I had discovered some of what I can do. Over the next couple of years, I found out more, so much more. I found out that I could read minds, plant thoughts, force people to always hear or never hear me, I could shape shift, and I can orb. Orbing is basically teleporting. I can also make myself a half breed of anything at will.”

He sighed and continued, “My parents were killed in battle shortly after my advancing powers were discovered. I was forced to leave my home in Vienna forever. The council had banished me for my own safety. I am one of the strongest of my kind. I was wanted by the shadow; our mortal enemy. I had to leave the only place I ever knew to save myself and my kind from extinction. I have been running from place to place ever since. I only fear the shadow and the demons it sends to kill me.”

He paused to asses my expression. I was staring wide-eyed at him. I was completely transfixed in his story. I hadn’t even noticed that his eyes were back to their ice blue color. “I have come across many different creatures during my travels, vampires, werewolves, zombies, sprites, ogres, dragons, demons, and several others who are too rare to name. I have also learned a lot from my encounters. I have learned that vampires and werewolves cannot live in peace together, that sprites only live near the North Pole, and many other small tidbits. But everything I have ever learned about vampires does not apply to you and your family. I have never seen anything like it, and I am fascinated. You live with vampires and are not afraid, you treat them like regular people, and you are never harmed by them. All I want to know is why.” He finished and sat down in the grass. Now it was my turn to speak.

I took a deep breath and dived into my story, the real story this time, “…None of them ever try to bite me because they are all ‘vegetarians’ they feed on animal blood so they won’t harm humans unless they have a very good reason. Like I said, I’m a half-breed, but we don’t need to go into other people’s life stories to find out how I got here. I am treated like family by them and not as a meal. I am used to their smell, and can hardly tell the difference between werewolf and vampire. They have never, ever, harmed me in any way.” I finished letting out a sigh. What was I going to tell Edward?

It was getting darker now, and I didn’t know how much longer my family would wait before Edward sent himself after me. I got up off of my butt, which was damp from the rain we had had earlier. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Lucas stand, staring at something in the trees behind me. My mind immediately knew it was Edward. I also could have found that out by the low growl and the pair of topaz eyes boring into the back of my head.

“I’m coming Edward.” I said as I heaved my stiff self up.

He seemed not to notice me as I walked over to his side. He was glaring at Lucas. I didn’t like the look that either of them had on their faces. Edward was obviously furious, either at me or Lucas, and Lucas was… teasing almost. I don’t think I want to know what’s going on inside either of their heads. I nudged Edward’s arm ever so slightly, and we took off.

I did not risk even the slightest glance over my shoulder to look back at Lucas for fear the Edward would see.

Well? Edward thought.

Well what? All we did was talk, is that so wrong? Well he did most of the talking, explaining really, I just sat and listened.

Well? By ‘well’ I mean what did you learn? Edward was obviously interested in how much Lucas knew. So I told him the whole story from memory. Edward was impressed about what Lucas had experienced, but never seemed to think any better of him.

* * * * *

The following days dragged. Alec was busy with the pack on patrol most of the time, and whenever he was free, I wasn’t. I missed spending a whole day with just him. I was also growing bored of being cooped up at home with my family twenty-four/ seven. I tried to enjoy Alice giving me constant makeovers, buying me new wardrobe, re-doing my hair, and all her other beautifying activities, but it was just getting kind of old. I wanted something to do.

I got my chance when I received an e-mail from Alec asking if we could meet sometime soon. He wanted to meet my on Friday after school in the woods along the boundary. I agreed, knowing I needed to get out of the house.

When Friday finally came, I was bouncing up and down in my Porsche as I sped my way down to the border line. I was bubbling with the excitement that had been almost impossible to contain throughout the day. Edward and Bella knew where I was going to be, so it was fine with them as long as I stayed out of trouble. Which was easy for me to do, my mom was the danger magnet in the family, not me.

I could see Alec’s outline in the trees as he waited for me on his side of the line. I practically jumped out of my car and over to him. It felt like I hadn’t seen him in ages. His smile was glowing against the shade of the trees. It dazzled me, as always. He walked out of the shade to meet me half way. He wasn’t wearing a shirt or shoes, but the rest of him was covered. It was amazing how much he looked like the picture of Jacob that mom had kept from her senior year scrap book.

“Hey Liz, how have you been? It seems like I haven’t seen you in forever.” Alec said as he slid one of his arms around my waist.

“I’m doing ok, but I’ve missed seeing you a lot. How about you?” I asked as we started walking towards the tree line/

We talked about everything we had missed out on. Alec was now on spring break, and I still had three weeks to go until I get my break. The pack had gotten a new member, Anthony, Quil and Clare’s son had just morphed. My life was pretty much as it had been except for the run in with Lucas. Alec didn’t seem to like the thought of me hanging out with Lucas. Everyone was so irritated by Lucas being my friend. I honestly didn’t see the harm in it.

We had made our way about half way through the woods to Alec’s house when I heard a “voice”, a thought rather, in my head.

So, you’re hanging out with the werewolves now. Hmm, let’s see so now can I call you a were-pire girl? His mind started laughing. It was Lucas. I looked up into the trees to see if I could spot him. I did. He was sitting on a low, but thick branch with a wide grin on his face. Alec looked up at him and growled. Lucas jumped from his perch and landed directly in front of us. This wasn’t going to go well.

“Don’t worry, dog. I’m not going to hurt your precious girlfriend.” Lucas said with a smirk. Was he against both vampires and werewolves?

Alec growled and wrapped his arm tighter around my waist. “She is not my girlfriend. We are just two people hanging out together, and what gives you the right to be here anyway?”

“I just thought I would drop by and have some fun. Elizabeth really likes being with you. She thinks about you a lot.” Lucas said. I glared at him. Why was he telling Alec what I thought about him? Was he against me or something?

“Why are you doing this Luke?” I asked emphasizing my annoyance.

Luke just stared at me and flashed his crooked smile. It annoyed me even more.

Let’s go Liz, I don’t like this guy. Alec thought.

“Oh, I’m so sorry that you don’t like me Alec. I really do wish we could try to get along.” Luke said, mocking Alec’s thoughts. Alec just stared at him, “Oh, I had not realized that Elizabeth had not told you about my powers.” Why was he doing this?

Alec was shaking now, and shaking fast. I knew the way to the reservation from here, and I could get there easily and get Sam to come and help calm Alec down if I needed to. I knew I did not have much time to think about it before Alec would morph, but I wouldn’t be able to get there and back fast enough before Alec practically ripped Luke to pieces. But I took off anyway.

Where is she going? Luke thought. I hope I didn’t offend her.

Oh Liz, please don’t go get Sam. I can stay calm. Really I can.

Too bad guys, I can’t risk Alec ripping anyone to pieces. I know he won’t be able to live with himself. Even if the person he mauls isn’t anyone he knows.

I was at Sam’s door within twenty seconds of leaving. Hopefully Alec hadn’t done anything too stupid yet.

“Sam!” I yelled, “I need your help. It’s Alec, he can’t stay calm and I’m afraid someone’s going to get hurt! He’s in the woods and he was about to morph when I left!”

Sam was with me and running in seconds. We made it back to see Alec finish morphing and a wide smirk on Lucas’s face.

Get back. Sam thought. I obeyed him without question. I knew what was going to happen. Sam morphed. The big black wolf leapt in between the steel-grey one and Lucas. Trying to stop a possibly deadly fight. Alec growled for Sam to get out of the way, but backed down when Sam glared at him. Lucas just stood and watched. He was most likely reading the wolves’ minds. Alec took off into the woods and Sam followed. They came back in human forms. Lucas was standing next to me when they got back. Alec glared and I walked over to him as soon as I noticed Lucas had moved. Alec seemed pleased that I did not want to be near Luke right now. Sam glared at Lucas as Alec and I walked past him and towards Alec’s house.
