Alice is chosen to implement the first step of the plan. It’s most likely, after all, that her mate would be the one to lose control, and she’s the one who can see the future.

I wonder how Edward caught wind of this whole event. He’s a genius.

While Alice is telling her brilliant lies, Edward, Jazz, and I review the plan.

“So Quil and Claire are getting married?” I ask for what must be the seventh or eight time. The last time I’d even thought about them, she’d been two years old, and I’d been a human. It seems bizarre and disturbing, since I haven’t grown older—when would they have?

“That’s what Alice saw. And I figured that would make a pretty good distraction.”

I shudder at the word.

“What’s wrong, love?”

“Distraction,” I whisper, and he winces.

“Bella, my love, nothing could ever distract from you. You are the world to me. Everything I see is you—how then can I be distracted from the universe?”

I grin at his impromptu heartfelt speech. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” He pauses and then resumes the story. “So Alice goes to Quil, asks him to invite the pack to the wedding. She has a cover story, something about Jasper and his singer and the Volturi coming after them—working a bit of the truth into the lie. She convinces him—I am certain you know how convincing Alice can be—to invite the pack to their wedding. They live in North Carolina now.”

“Claire’s going to college there,” I confirm, reiterating what he’d told me earlier.

“The pack will go to the wedding. We’ll rush to La Push and show the Volturi how we destroyed the wolves.”

And everyone will live happily ever after, Jasper offers sarcastically in his mind.

“Do you not think it’s going to work?”
“I do,” he says, this time aloud. “But I’m… doubtful. You know they hate us.”

“Yes. But they might be able to find it in their hearts to take the clue we’re giving them and live. I can’t bear to make Bella turn on her friends. They saved her, and for that, I am ever in their debt.”

“As am I,” I agree. “After all, without… none of us would be here. Not me, and not Edward, and then the newborns would have… maybe we’ll be able to convince them to help. It can’t hurt to try. Because I can’t bear to hurt them. Except… for the family. If I have to. But it’s the last thing I’d choose. If there’s any other way…”

“I think it will work. The pack’s like a family, after all. They’ll stick together.”

“They’ll want to be here.”

Jasper and Edward tried to comfort me, but I sigh. “I hope so.”

“Don’t worry, love,” Edward whispers, taking me into his arms. “Don’t worry.”

And I don’t, because for the moment we are safe and together and maybe it will last.

I want other things, but that’s really all I need.
