“See, these are just so much more tasteful than those hideous things you picked out. This is good taste, my friend,” I mutter to Alice as we pore over the wedding invitations we’ve unexpectedly received.

“Hush, ungrateful cretin!”

Edward growls, and I roll my eyes. “Overprotective much? Am I not allowed to tease my own sister?”

“Sorry, love.” He smiles regretfully, his eyes widening. After the length of our separation, it’s like the very first days of our romance. This little gesture has me catching my unnecessary breath, my stomach churning and my muscles shaking just a little.

If I were a human, I’d probably pass out. It makes me a bit sad that I can’t, yet nonetheless I’m delighted I am finally his equal. I can stay conscious and take his hand, my fingers weaving through his.

“I love you,” I whisper. Alice makes a face.

“Yes, yes, moving on.”

“Serves you right,” Edward teases, pulling me over to him and kissing the top of my hair. “All these years I have to put up with hearing about how much you love Jasper, how wonderful and fantastic he is, and… well… other things too.” I snicker. My Edward the prude. “Now, now I get my revenge.”

“Some revenge,” I say, suitably distracted by his lips tracing up and down my jawline.

“No. Really moving on, what are we going to do?”

“Werewolf wedding vs. our lives… let’s skip it, in my opinion.”

“I think we should go,” I say, and then look around as they stare at me, mouths agape, like I’ve just suggested we move to Antarctica and live off penguins. “What? We need to keep the werewolves busy for a day or two. Ever think of that?”

“She’s right,” Jasper agrees. “What if they leave too soon? What’s the date on that invitation… two weeks from now? That’s a little before the Volturi are coming, isn’t it? We’ll need to split up. If Carlisle, Esme, Rosalie, and Emmett stay here, they can… stall.” I note his careful avoidance of the word ‘distract’. “We’ll go to La Push and show off its lack of vampires, while the others keep the pack from returning. Sound like a good plan?”

I nod. Of course, Edward has to find a flaw in the plan.

“But only Bella was invited to the wedding!”

“So?” Alice asks. “We’re vampires. We’re not allowed to crash one little party?”

“She has a point,” I say, and Edward laughs.

“Indeed she does.”

“And this means we get to go shopping!” Alice squeals, and I groan.

“Is it absolutely strictly necessary, Alice?”

“Of course! You can’t go to a wedding in your Volturi robe, my friend.”

Imitating Edward’s habit, I squeeze the bridge of my nose.

God give me patience to endure…

“We’re agreed, then. I’ll call Carlisle,” Edward proclaims.

“This may actually work,” I say, voice full of wonder.

“Don’t sound so skeptical, love. This is my plan, after all.”

“And you’ve never been wrong before,” Alice taunts.

His eyes grow dark. “Everyone makes mistakes,” I whisper, and he smiles just a little.
