“This is where I’ll leave you.” spoke his musical voice into the night air. He gave his creation one last hug before leaving her to embrace her new life. She watched as his tall shadow melted into the dark Italian sky. Turning, she faced a large steel door, embroidered with jewels of every shape, size, and color.
“Ding dong! Ding dong, ding dong, ding dong, ding dong!” shrilled the door bell of the Volturi mansion. A steely faced receptionist opened it and glared at the girl standing there in the moonlight.
“I love your door bell!” exclaimed the girl, moonlight reflecting off of her perfect, toothy smile. She was small and ghostly white, as if her skin had been bleached over time. Curtains of bleach blond hair framed her small, angular face and came to rest at her lower back. Red eyes peaked out from underneath long dark eyelashes, giving away her position in the world immediately.
“Come right in, Aro will be overjoyed to have company.” droned the receptionist in an unwelcoming voice. She stepped aside to allow the girl with the dazzling smile to enter. The visitor followed her silently, gaping at the pictures that had been carved into the stone walls of the enormous building. They finally came to a halt in front of a pair of thick double doors. The receptionist turned and started back the way she came, leaving the astonished visitor standing alone.
The wide doors opened, revealing a cozy office and three ancient vampires. The one in the middle stood up, a huge smile plastered onto his face.
“Welcome! It’s been so long since we’ve had any visitors! Please, come in. Come in. Have a seat!” he motioned toward an expensive looking red reclining chair across from his own.
“Thank you. This is a marvelous home that you’ve built here. I couldn’t help but notice all the art work on the walls, it’s absolutely amazing!” squealed the guest.
The middle vampire chuckled at her enthusiasm. The vampire on his left simply stared at her, while the one on his right hadn’t even seemed to notice her arrival.
“Let’s get right to the point, shall we?” said the happiest of the three, sitting down across from her. “My name’s Aro. These are my life long partners, Caius,” he pointed to the man on his left. “And Marcus.” he announced, pointing to his right.
“Pleasure to meet you, Aro, Caius, Marcus.” she sang, bowing slightly to each one. “My name’s Evangelina, I just came to see if there’s any possibility that I could join the Volturi. I have no where else to go.”
“That all depends. Here, lend me your hand and I’ll decide whether or not your talents will be any use.” He extended a strong pale hand her way, and she confidently grasped it tightly with her own.
He took a moment, studying her past. “Interesting, another mood controller.” he mumbled, breaking the silence that had wrapped itself around them. “I suppose we could use your talents…what do you think?” he turned his head and focused questioning eyes on Marcus and Caius.
Before they could respond, Evangelina spoke up. “Jeez! That’s old. I had no idea that the Volturi had been around for that long.” Aro noticed that her eyes had gone from red to a metallic silver color.
“What do you mean? No one told you how long we’ve been here.” Aro turned his attention back to her. She removed her hand from his grip and her eyes returned to their normal red glow.
“What do you mean? You just told me yourself that the Volturi’s been here for over three thousand years.”
Aro’s eyes grew wide as an idea struck him. But could power such as that even be possible? “Marcus, come here for a moment. I want to test a theory of mine.” Marcus moved swiftly from his seat to Aro’s side.
“Yes Aro?” he asked, although there was no tone in his voice.
“Let me see your hand,” Marcus laid his hand gently in Aro’s right hand. “Okay. Eve, your hand please?” Eve put her hand into Aro’s left hand. He took both of their hands and touched them together, looking at Eve expectantly.
After sitting like that for almost ten minutes, Eve let out a long sigh. “Exactly what is this supposed to prove?” she asked with a sharp edge of annoyance in her voice.
“Hmm…I guess I was wro-“ Aro stopped mid sentence when Eve’s eyes turned silver once more. He gripped her shoulder and his face lit up instantly. “Fascinating!”
“What do you see Aro?” asked Caius, suddenly standing by Evangelina.
“The Volturi would be honored to have you at their side.”
“Why the sudden change in mind?” asked Eve. She noticed a sort of authority in Aro’s eyes. It was plain to see that he made all the rules here, even if he claimed that Marcus and Caius were just as important as him. How she could tell all of this, she had no idea.
“Why the sudden change in mind?” he restated her question. “Perhaps because of the fact that you have the most remarkable ability that I have ever seen. And that’s saying a lot.” he gave her a bright smile before turning to face the questioning gazes of the two men beside him. “Evangelina here can mimic the powers of others that she has touched.” he stated proudly.
Even Marcus let out a small gasp at this. Evangelina’s eyes grew twice their size. “I-I can? How can you tell?”
“Marcus has the power to see relationships. I have the power to read the past thoughts of whoever I am touching. When you came into contact with Marcus, you were able to see the relationship between the three of us.” he motioned to him, Marcus, and Caius. “Do you remember the name of the vampire who changed you?”
“Um, no actually. I can’t remember.”
“Did he have any affect on you mood at all?”
“Yes, I was always calmer around him.” Realization appeared in her eyes.
Aro turned and exchanged a knowing glance with his partners.
“Well Evangelina, welcome to the Volturi Guard!” Aro exclaimed. “I’ll call Alec and have him show you to your room.”
She tried standing, but ended up fainting into Marcus’s marble arms.
