Edward was at Charlie’s house, helping me pack up my belongings before we left for college. We were going to Alaska (I still hoped he would change me, after all, we were married and he promised). I was closing the trunk of the shiny Volvo with Edward beside me, when a russet brown blur hit him in the chest. I recognized it immediately.

“No!” I shrieked, not in fear for Jacob, but out of worry for my new husband. Edward jumped to his feet immediately, snarling angrily at Jacob.

“He won’t let you go.” He muttered softly, planting himself in front of me protectively.

“Jake, you’re an idiot!” I yelled at the growling wolf in front of me. “I have to leave! I just have to!” I was almost in tears.

“He thinks you’re being stupid, and he wants to kill... fight me.” Edward informed me. I knew what Jacob had thought and it only terrified me more. I didn’t know what to do. Why did Jacob even care?

Suddenly, Jacob lunged. It was so quick; I would have missed it if I didn’t know how faced-paced these kinds of fights were. Edward was already a step ahead, thanks to the fact that he could read minds.

“I hate you Jake!” I shrieked, sobbing.

Reading his thoughts, Edward said “She won’t ever love you more than a brother... if she ever forgives you.” He was right.

Jacob’s response was another attack. Edward hurled him off, and then pulled me towards the house.

“Get inside and stay there.” He instructed me, half pleading.

“Now!” Edward commanded looking worried and frightening at the same time.

I had to oblige. I ran to the nearest window, and peered anxiously outside. The two had become a blur, but Edward had the upper hand. Suddenly, he flew through the open door. I would probably be dead if I had been in the way, not because of the fact that Edward was literally rock solid, but because of the force of Jacob’s attack.

Edward was staring at me, analyzing my worried expression. After a few seconds, he turned back to Jacob. “My fault?” he hissed angrily, answering Jacob’s thoughts. “Go away, you stupid dog.”

He sprang towards Jacob, knocking him over. Jake flung him into the street. The sound of him hitting concrete was more like two boulders colliding.

The fight was becoming even more serious, with both of them furious. I had the feeling Jacob wasn’t holding back, and Edward wasn’t even trying to attack. He was countering Jacob’s moves as soon as he thought them. I watched in horror.

Finally, Jacob dove towards Edward, but he dodged the attack. Jacob hit the side of the house head first. He didn’t move. I felt bad for him, but he was just so stupid.

I was pretty sure that the fight was over, so I went outside. Once I was in front of Edward, I demanded “Are you okay?”

“Bella, I’m a vampire, remember? I’m rock solid.” he said sternly. Then his expression became solemn. “I’m so sorry Bella, he dove and I jumped out of the way...”

Before he could finish his unnecessary apology, he was hurled to the ground by a large russet colored wolf. Now I knew that Jacob would try to hide his thoughts. It was a fair fight.

I couldn’t believe Jacob used to be my best friend. I remembered the gift he gave me for high school graduation. I glanced down at the charm bracelet on my wrist. I couldn’t believe someone so big could carve such a perfect wolf out of wood. The charm made me miss being friends.

When I looked up, I saw a horrible sight. Jacob was covered in blood. His wounded neck was bleeding profusely and he was in pain. I knew he had no chance to win the fight. Sure, he could heal at an amazing rate, but that wasn’t what I was worried about.

“The venom doesn’t kill – it’s merely incapacitating. It works slowly, spreading through the bloodstream, so that, once bitten, our prey is in too much physical pain to escape us.” Alice had told me that during our junior year of high school. Either Jacob dies, or he turns into a vampire. He would be half werewolf and half vampire. Jacob would be shunned by both creatures.

I met Edward’s gaze and nodded glumly. We both knew what he had to do. I closed my eyes, turned away, and waited.

A few minutes later, I felt a cold hand on my shoulder. “Bella...I...I’m so terribly sorry. I killed your best friend.” He whispered in my ear. “I had to, we both know that. I didn’t want to but it was for Jacob’s own good.”

“I know.” I whispered my voice barely audible. I closed my eyes tighter, turned around into his arms, and cried for everything and everyone I hadn’t already cried for, the Clearwaters, Billy, Rachel and Rebecca, Charlie, and finally, Jacob.
