We had made it to Edward, then and he took Bella’s hand. For some reason he smiled.

“So as discussed, I am not allowed to wish you a happy birthday, is that correct?”

“Yes, that is correct.”

“Just checking. You might have changed your mind. Most people seem to enjoy things like birthdays and gifts.”

I couldn’t help it- I laughed. “Of course you’ll enjoy it.” I managed to get out. “Everyone is supposed to be nice to you today and give you your way, Bella. What’s the worst that could happen?”

I was surprised with her response. “Getting older.”

Edward’s grin turned into a hard line. I tried to lighten the mood.

“Eighteen isn’t very old. Don’t women usually wait till they’re twenty-nine to get upset over birthdays?” I snorted.

“It’s older then Edward”, she mumbled. Edward sighed.

“Technically. Just by one year, though.” I tried to keep my tone light. “What time will you be at the house?” I tried to change the subject. I was excited about the party-everything was going to be perfect.

“I didn’t know I had plans to be there.”

She was not going to ruin all the fun for me. “Oh, be fair, Bella! You aren’t going to ruin all our fun like that, are you?”

“I thought my birthday was about what I want.”

“I’ll get her from Charlie’s right after school,” Edward informed me, ignoring Bella.

“I have to work.”

“You don’t, actually. I already spoke to Mrs. Newton about it. She’s trading your shift. She said to tell you ‘Happy Birthday’.” I had called last night and set it all up.

“I-I still can’t come over. I haven’t watched Romeo and Juliet yet for English.”

Seriously. “You have Romeo and Juliet memorized.

“But Mr. Berty said we needed to see it performed to fully appreciate it-that’s how Shakespeare intended it to be presented.”

“You’ve already seen the movie.”

“But not the nineteen-sixty version. Mr. Berty said it was the best.”

That’s when I lost it. I glared at Bella. “This can be easy, or this can be hard, Bella, but one way or the other-“Edward interrupted me then before I was finished.

“Relax, Alice. If Bella wants to watch a movie, then she can. It’s her birthday.”

“So there.” Now Bella was just getting on my nerves.

“I’ll bring her over around seven. That should give you more time to set up.” He finished.

I laughed, happily. “Sounds good. See you tonight, Bella! It will be fun, you’ll see.” I smiled widely then kissed her on the check and scurried to my first class.

In my mind, I made sure I had everything planned. I was sure of everything, except for how many plates to put out. After a few minutes, I decided I would just put a whole stack of plates on the piano, where Edward had agreed to where we could put the cake.

Lunch passed on unadventurously and we didn’t branch into the subject to Bella again. I drove the Volvo home to make sure everything was going as planned. It was.
