Chapter 11: Surprise!

“Bella?”

I couldn’t breath, my chest suddenly tight. What was I going to do? I couldn’t cope with the fact that Renee was coming and that there were potentially dangerous vampires downstairs. I had to find something to do about Renee’s early visit and then deal with the three new vampires in the Cullen household. Part of me wished that I hadn’t been such a coward and returned home to Charlie this morning. Then I wouldn’t have had to deal with any of this news, but I was unbelievably selfish like that. I was only thinking of myself. I actually had a greater fear for my mother coming to visit than the newborn that had little self control that was walking around two floors below me. I shuddered at the thought.

I gasped for air as I laid back on the large bed with a black silk comforter. Sinking into its softness, I tried to concentrate on breathing, but my mind wandered to far from my original intent. What was I going to do about Renee? I couldn’t risk her finding that my fiancée and his family were a group of vampires. And what would she say when she discovered that they didn’t eat--well normal food at least? Renee would notice, she was perceptive like that: too perceptive for her own good. Renee could have been even more perceptive than I was. If I had told that to Edward, he would have had a hard time believing it. My rational was that it was due to the fact that there was a child trapped inside an adult body. She had always been like that, ever since I was a child. I was her little open book, as she called it.

However, I couldn’t deny that I wouldn’t be happy to see her, but I knew that she was coming to make me see reason. Even though she had given us her blessing, I knew that Renee wasn’t happy about it. She would want to watch me sit and think through my decision in front of her, even though I had already made up my mind. It was closure and proof she wanted and I guess I need to give her that. After all, I wouldn’t be seeing her again after the wedding. She would probably be dead before I was ready to be around humans. That thought scared me. But part of me didn’t want Renee’s doubt in my head, I had made up my mind.

“Bella?” Alice’s voice asked again, cutting through my thoughts. I flinched when I noticed her golden eyes inches from my face, etched with concern. I hadn’t even noticed the tears that was lightly rolling down my cheeks. “Bell, what’s wrong?” she asked, her voice tense. I knew she was listening downstairs.

However, Alice stood up suddenly, her eyes darting toward the door. A smirk came over her perfect features. She quickly darted to put something back in the closet before looking back at me. I hastily wiped my eyes dry of all tears. I didn’t know what was going on. “Come in, Edward,” she said in a soft tone. I noticed that she now wore an amused expression.

The door opened slowly and then I saw him. I forgot to breathe as his perfect form glided effortlessly toward me. His arms snaked around me. I hadn’t even heard the door shut behind him. I was entranced by his very presence.

“You know you’re being rude, Edward,” Alice said, her lips pursed. She took as seat next to me on the bed. I hardly felt it move under her weight. “They came here to see you…and Carlisle.”

“I don’t care,” Edward said simply, his eyes were looking directly into mine now. I couldn’t look away, locking into their gaze. I suddenly thought that I would rather die than look away from their beauty. “Were you crying?” he whispered to me, though I knew Alice could hear. His cold fingers reached up, gently tracing my eyelids. I suddenly gasped at his touch; air filled my lungs.

“No,” I lied, but he didn’t buy it. His eyes burned into mine again. Edward’s topaz eyes seemed to look into my soul that belonged to him. “Okay…maybe.”

“Why?” he asked, his tone changing suddenly. Edward was kneeling in front of me, trying to read my expression.

“We were trying to do wedding plans, Edward. You should go down to greet the Conners’! I’ll bring Bella down when we’re done. I’ve just got a few things I need to get straightened away. And,” Alice added pointedly. “They are things that the groom doesn’t get to see until the night of.”

I turned to look at Alice, my mouth agape. What was she talking about? Was she trying to give me a heart attack? First my mother and now this?! I knew that she didn’t have a beating heart to stun, but mine was still in use. Couldn’t she have waited, instead of springing all these things on me at once?

“She’ll be safe here with me, I promise.” Alice finished. I had missed the middle of her explanation in my moment of shock. However, it seemed that Edward had ignored every word she had said.

Edward’s gaze hadn’t moved from me. I felt suddenly self-conscious. He was waiting for me to answer his question, but I didn’t feel up to it right now. “Later,” I muttered to him and he shook his head at me. The scent that came off of him could have paralyzed me.

“Bella, it’s better if I know now, before I introduce you to a group of vampires. I don’t want you to be frightened, even though you have are right to be. I promise nothing will happen to you,” his tone and eyes were so serious. How could I not believe that?

I laughed at what he said, causing his eyebrow to raise. How silly of him to think that I was frightened of vampires at this point in time. I was marrying one for crying out loud!

“That’s not it,” I giggled, wrapping my arms around his concrete neck. “Renee’s coming.” I sighed, defeated. I knew I couldn’t put this off any more either.

“I know,” he whispered back, his lips brushing up against my cheek. It sent a shiver up my spine. “But we have a plan.”

“And I thought you couldn’t read my mind,” I accused, though I knew that he had guessed my distress. Edward’s body shook with the silent laughter that I love, my crooked smile on his beautiful face.

“Edward, please!” Alice whined, tugging at the collar of his shirt. “You need to share Bella! She’s my friend too!”

I raised a brow up at her. So now I was the Cullen family toy? That was something new, I thought. However, I liked the sound of that when it was just Edward and I, but I didn’t want to be Alice’s doll. I couldn’t even imagine what she would do to me if I let her have her own way all the time. I shuddered at the thought.

Edward cupped my face in his hands, giving me a quick kiss. His stone lips crushed mine for about 10 seconds before he pulled away. Even though the time was short, I still felt breathless.

“I’ll be outside the door waiting,” Edward said quietly as Alice scowled at him.

“You better not be listening or I’ll kick your butt!” Alice called after him with a glowering look. However, as soon as the chuckling Edward had shut the door, Alice’s face was glowing again. “You’re going to love me!” she sang, dancing back to the closet.

“I already love you, why push your luck?” I teased as she pulled out a rectangular white box.

“I don’t know if this will fit, but I think it will. It will look lovely underneath your wedding gown!” Alice said, her eyes, if possible, were lighter. I had to blink a few times to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. “Open it!” she sang with delight, her high voice not any louder than a whisper.

I cautiously took the box from her and set it on my lap. I took in a deep breath and let it out before I moved my finger to the edges of the box. I was taking my time and I knew Alice wasn’t happy about it. She could be rather impatient at times. I would have my fun with her though.

“For goodness sake!” Alice said after a second and a half, ripping the box away from be and throwing the lid to the floor. She shoved the box back into my hands. I looked down and my jaw dropped at the sight in front of me.

In the white box with an extremely fancy blue and gold laced corset that would fit perfectly under my wedding gown. I gapped at it, carefully running my fingers over the timeless item. I looked in further to see a pair of matching underwear.

“Do you like it?” Alice asked me, bouncing up and down on her heals. “Edward’s going to be drooling!”

“I-It’s beautiful“ I stammered, afraid that it was an allusion. How could I ever wear something like this? Lingerie was not something that I was accustom to seeing myself in, let alone picturing it. It was shocking.

“I know! I saw this and I knew you had to have it! I completes the contour of your wedding gown and I want everything to be perfect! You’ll be the most beautiful bride ever, Bella!” Alice gushed.

“Not a pretty as Rosalie,” I said with a slight frown.

Alice laughed. “Oh, silly, Bella,” she giggled. “Rosalie wont have anything on you when I’m done.” I hoped she hadn’t heard that. It would just give her another reason to dislike me.

I let out a sigh before Alice tackled me into a hug. I couldn’t wait until I was her sister for real. I could only count down the days until I was down the aisle and married the only man that was made for me. I would be with him for eternity.

There was suddenly a light knock on the door. Edward had been away from me for too long and he was getting anxious.

“Ready?” Alice asked, literally picking me off the bed and setting me onto the floor.

“No, but let’s get this over with,” I sighed. Alice took my hand and gently lead me to the door. The door was suddenly open before we reached it and Edward took me into his arm and away from Alice. He pressed his lips to my hairline.

“I’ve missed you,” he breathed. “And we don’t have to do this if you don’t want to. We could go to my room.”

“Oh, Edward,” I said, pulling his face back to look at his brilliant eyes. “Let’s get this over with. There is no sense in hiding in your room, not that I’m opposed to the idea for later, but think we should go see your friends that have traveled so far to see you.”

“See,” Alice sneered, sticking her tongue out at Edward. He ignored her and took my hand.

“Alright,” he sighed, and lead both Alice and I down the long hallway. I was in the middle of a vampire sandwich.
