Chapter 2: Announcements

“Bells, is that you?” Charlie called form the living room as Edward and I entered the house, my body shaking.

“Yeah, Dad,” I said, my heart racing faster and faster with each passing moment. “Edward’s here too.”

I heard a grunt from the living room. I knew that Charlie hadn’t forgiven Edward for leaving me last year, making my announcement more difficult. Charlie was not an easily forgiving man, which I blamed on his line of work. And if we weren’t careful, Charlie would probably cuff Edward and drag him down to the police station. This thought made my anxiety increase to a whole new level.

“Relax,” Edward’s liquid voice whispered in my ear. Even his velvet tone couldn’t calm me down now, it was to late. Where was Jasper when you needed him?

I felt Edward’s icy thumb rubbing the back of my hand. His lips pressed lightly to my cheek, making my heart race faster. I couldn’t breathe as Edward lead me to Charlie. I felt worse now that I had before. I think this feeling was worse than when I watched Edward face Victoria and I thought that my life was over as I knew it.

“Bells, what is it?” Charlie’s voice said in a panicked tone. I suddenly found myself standing in front of him, Edward’s arm around my waist. “You look like your about to be sick.”

I realized that my face must have been ghost white, even green. I was scared out of my mind, and to make matters worse, my head was spinning because of a lack of oxygen.

“Bella? Bella!”

I fell backwards, my eyes blacking out with large spots. An annoying ringing suddenly took over in my head, rendering me unconscious.

“What did you do to her?!” I heard Charlie rage a few moments later, my eyes slowly flickering open. I felt like someone had hit me in the head. However, the first person I saw wasn’t Charlie, it was Edward’s beautiful face.

I jumped, realizing that I was in his marble arms. Edward must have been moving my stupidly fragile frame to the couch. I felt so embarrassed for being so weak willed. I could feel my face blushing. I wished I could hide my face and all its embarrassing features away from the world.

“Put her down and get out of my house!” Charlie raged at Edward, wrongly thinking that he was the one that had caused me to faint.

“Dad,” I moaned, feeling a certain softness underneath that had to be the couch. Edward’s cold hand was now resting lightly on my head. He was working as my own personal icepack. “Stop, Dad. It’s not Edward’s fault, and he is not going anywhere.”

Charlie rumbled under his breath as I looked away from Edward for the first time. His arms were crossed in front of him and his brows were almost touching. I could read his anger and frustration from his body language. I had learned some of this perceptiveness from Edward and his family.

“Are you alright?” Edward asked me in a low whisper, my thoughts being instantly pulled away from Charlie. I looked in Edward’s eyes, and I felt amazingly reassured. I could do this.

“Yeah,” I muttered, slowly sitting up, Edward joining at my side.

I closed my eyes for a moment, collecting myself the rest of the way. I was trying to ease the feeling of spinning as I sat there, Edward holding my hand. I sighed, unable to put off Charlie’s reaction any longer.

“Dad,” I started, biting my lip, squeezing Edwards hand tightly. It was a good thing his skin was so hard, or else I would have broken the bones in his hand. “Edward and I have something to tell you.”

“No way, he is not moving in!” Charlie said, Edward trying not to let the corners of his mouth twitch up, obviously amused by Charlie’s thoughts. “And you’re not--”

“Dad!” I said overtop of his continuing rant. “I’m 18 and an adult! Besides, that’s not what we wanted to talk to you about.”

“How about you take a seat?” Edward suggested to Charlie in an extremely polite and well mannered tone. He was always a perfect gentleman.

“I’d prefer to stand,” Charlie answered shortly, his tone cutting through me like a knife. “So what’s this news, Bells? You’re not engaged are you?” Charlie laughed at this last part, never thinking it would be possible.

My face suddenly flushed crimson, looking down at my hand in Edwards. His icy hands were soothing, as the rest of my body was now flaring red as well. I couldn’t stand to look up to see Charlie’s reaction to what I had just done. I was mentally picturing him grabbing the baseball bat that I had wanted to use on Jacob Black a month ago.

Jacob. My heart sunk at the thought of him. I loved Jake too, but Edward was my everything. I couldn’t just throw Edward aside and run with the wolves, I would die. I would die without Edward, and I almost had once. Why couldn’t I have both? It was impossible and I knew it would never happen, as werewolves and vampires were mortal enemies. But with Jacob Black aside, I had more important issues at hand. Instead of worrying about what could have been, I needed to worry about Charlie not murdering Edward and myself.

“No, no, NO!” Charlie said shaking his head between us. “Absolutely not! I will not stand for this! How do I know he wont leave you again? He’s just as capable of walking out on you now, when your hopes are up, as he did last year!”

“Dad!” I said, my temper starting to flare. However, before I could say anymore, Edward was standing. His perfect voice was speaking to my father in a beautiful tone, one that always put me in awe. I thought I would be used to the boy’s beauty and brilliance after two years, but I was wrong. He would always amaze me.

“Mr. Swan, I love your daughter,” Edwards started, Charlie’s eyes bulging as Edward spoke to him with such grace. My father’s face was slowly turning purple. “I realized that when I left Bella last year that it was the biggest mistake that I had ever made in my life. But now, I know that I cannot live without her. I’m positive that she feels the same way. I give you my word that I will do everything in my power to protect your daughter from all harm. I will love and cherish her forever,” Edward concluded.

I looked to Charlie. He looked stunned for a moment as he looked between me and Edward. I was holding my breath, waiting for his explosion, but surprisingly, it didn’t come.

“Fine, but I’m not happy about it!” Charlie spat in an irritated voice. However, I could tell by the look on Edward’s face that he had accepted everything that Edward had told him, and believed him. I believed him to. “And I’m not telling Renee, that’s your job!”

By the look on my father’s face, I could tell that he was hoping to end the engagement with that last line. I had serious thought about it, but I couldn’t do that to Edward. Charlie would be disappointed when he learned that his attempt at reverse psychology had failed. I was being selfish, but I didn’t care. Edward was my life and my future. He was my everything.

“Thank you, Dad!” I squeaked, bounding off the couch and pulling Charlie into a hug. I was so happy that I had decided to move to Forks two years ago. I couldn’t imagine my life any different than what it was now.

My face was radiant as I hugged my father, the man being twice the size I was, hide the look of joy on my face. My smile could have rivaled the look I knew that was gleaming in Edward’s eyes. Charlie grunted a response that I didn’t hear, causing me to look up at him, a questioning look in my eyes.

“I want you to be happy, Bells, and if you think that Edward will do that for you, then who am I to stop you?” Charlie asked in a low rumble, hoping that Edward hadn’t heard him. I knew that the over perceptive vampire behind me had known this fact before I did, but that wasn’t what had made me so happy. Charlie had finally said Edward’s name in a non derogatory sense! I could have shouted for joy. “I’ll give you my blessing.”

“You’re amazing, Dad!” I muttered before placing a kiss on his ruff cheek. The little stubbles of hair on his face tickled my lips. “That was very decent of you, giving up your little girl and all.”

“Whoa, I didn’t say that I would do that,” Charlie said, looking down at me. “You’ll always be my little girl, no matter what your last name is.”

These words crushed my heart. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to see him again after I was changed into a vampire. I loved Charlie and everything that he had done for me, but Edward was still somehow more important. I couldn’t explain the sense that kept me closer to Edward than anyone else in my life. It was like I was under a magical spell. I wondered if humans could imprint on vampires.

“Thank you, Mr. Swan,” Edward said, now standing at my side, a beaming smile was stretched across his beautiful face. Edward offered Charlie his hand, my father taking it with an odd expression on his face.

“But if you hurt her again, I will become involved,” Charlie hissed, shaking my fiancée’s hand. I looked between my two favorite men, biting my lip. I hoped they would get along and that Charlie would see the goodness inside Edward. I saw it, but could Charlie?

“That wont be a problem, Sir,” Edward said, looking into my eyes. The topaz seemed to melt into me. Edward and I would be together forever. I wouldn’t let anything come in between us, interrupting the path I had chosen for the rest of eternity.

“Call me Charlie,” my dad said, my jaw dropping. Charlie was being extremely nice. Edward’s words must have moved him, causing him to understand my side of the relationship a little bit better. Or, maybe it was the look in the boy’s eyes. He was perfect, and I was the piece that completed him, even if I didn’t believe it myself. It was the truth.

I beamed at Charlie for a moment before I turned back to Edward, my heart dancing in my chest again.

“Alright,” I sighed. “I think it’s time to call Renee.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to wait a few minutes?” Edward asked me in a surprised tone. He was just as shocked as I was at the words that had just come out of my mouth. What was I thinking? Calling Renee to tell her I was getting married was like a death wish!

“Yeah,” I sighed, taking a deep breath before walking over to the phone, Edward sitting next to me at the table. However, I was surprised to find Charlie with us too.

“So when’s the wedding?” Charlie asked as I picked up the phone.

“August 13th,” I said, slowly dialing the number to my mother’s cell phone.

“Of next year?” Charlie asked, looking surprised at how soon it was.

“No,” I said, pulling the receiver to my ear. “Of this year…”

My father looked like he was about to faint, but I couldn’t worry about that right now, Renee had just answered her phone…
