Chapter 5: Hiding

My heart had stopped beating in my chest for a moment as I watched the figure move with an unnatural grace. I knew it had to be a vampire but Edward wasn’t do back until tomorrow and Alice was much shorter than this person. I pulled the covers defensively around me, not that that would help protect me from a rouge vampire. My first fear, however, hadn’t been for me, it had been for Alice. If this vampire had gotten past her…I shuddered to think about it. I couldn’t think about what could have happened to little Alice.

Seemed like an eternity as the figure slowly walked toward me, the figures grace as almost mesmerizing. I slowly pushed myself backwards in the bed, feeling as if I didn’t have any hope of survival now. I pressed my back to the bars of the headboard, trying to get as far away from the figure as possible. I had hoped that by moving so slowly that I hadn’t spread my sweet scent too far. However, they couldn’t get past the loud thrashing of my heart in my chest. The odd muscle in my chest felt like it was about to break through my sink, beating heavily on the bed in front of me.

I closed my eyes, trying to picture Edward in my mind. He was the last thing I wanted to see before I died, as I was obviously at the hands of a merciless vampire. But why were they moving so slowly? It seemed like they had been walking toward me with that unusually grace for minutes. Was I seeing things? I didn’t open my eyes to check. I squeezed my eyelids as tight as I could, remembering Edward’s perfect face perfectly. He was all I wanted to see before I was killed.

Suddenly, I felt an icy hand on the side of my face. I flinched. This was weird, no one had ever touched me before they had attempted to bite me. I was positive of this, as I had been under fire of both James, Laurent, and Victoria. This hand that touched my face had a gentle touch, one that could only be matched by Edward. I slowly opened my eyes and I met a pair of melted gold eyes. My heart fluttered.

“Edward…” I breathed, his beauty, even unseen in the dark was breathtaking. “I thought you--”

“Shh,” he said, his hand taking mine. I felt him pull my wrist to his nose, taking in the sweet scent of my blood. His cold nose rubbed lightly against my skin, causing me to have a sharp intake of breath. His touch caused electricity to flow through my veins.

My right hand shakily made it’s way to Edward’s frozen cheek. His skin felt smooth and perfect under my hand, just as it always had been. I felt him smile under my touch, the corners of his mouth pulling up ever so slightly. I looked through the darkness to find his stunning gold eyes again, but I couldn’t see them. I realized that he must have closed them as she smelled the bouquet while resisting the wine, as he put it. I giggled to myself a the thought.

I suddenly felt him scoop me up into his arms and lay me down against the soft golden pillows, my heart thumping in my chest. I heard him chuckle to himself before he came down on my. Edward was careful not to squish me with his weight, but he allowed just enough of his granite chest to push down on me with an amazing pleasure. I was halfway through taking an uneven breath when his cold lips came down on mine eagerly. His lips were anxious and enthusiastic all at once, my own lips shaping quickly to his. The taste of his sweet breath was intoxicating to me, causing me to wrap my arms around his neck, my fingers braiding themselves into his perfect auburn hair. I couldn’t seem to get close enough to Edward as I pressed my body into his chest. I fit perfectly with the contour of his body. Edward’s hands cupped my face as he kissed me, sending shivers up my spine. However, these weren’t shivers from his icy body, but from the pleasure I was receiving from his powerful kiss.

Although, all good things always seemed to come to end. I groaned as Edward pulled away, looking down at me with his melted topaz eyes. My heart fluttered again.

“Hello,” he said with his soft velvet voice, my heart race increasing a little more. I could see a brilliant smile flash across his face, even though it was still dark. My breathing was uneven as I unknotted one of my hands from his hair and placed on the side of my face.

“Hey,” I muttered back breathlessly. He was dazzling me again.

Edward placed a soft kiss on my forehead before rolling over to my side and cradling me in the circle of his arms. I rested my head against his chest, listening to his silent heart. I could have stayed in his arms forever, perfectly content. I breathed in and out slowly, trying to control my tattered breaths.

“I missed you,” Edward said softly in my ear, his lips tickling me. He started to make of circlet of kisses from my cheek to my neck and back up. “I couldn’t stand being away from you for two days. The anxiety was killing me…”

“I missed you too,” I responded in a breathless tone, his kisses seemed to knock the wind out of me, each on causing an eruption of heat. “But are you well fed?”

“Of course,” Edward said, I could feel him smile through his pattern of kisses. “I bagged a big mountain lion for you. How about you? Did Alice treat you well.”

I laughed to myself at this before I answered him. I felt his head turn to try and read my expression through the darkness. “If you consider torture by tasting about twenty different types of cake, then yes.” I said, recalling my breakfast lunch and dinner. “She tried to buy ice sculptures, Edward, ice sculptures of us!”

Edward chuckled lightly to himself, his body shaking my frame. “Alice will be Alice,” he laughed. “She was still planning when I got home. I hope you didn’t mind me peeking at what you’ve picked out.” Edward had a slightly guilty tone to his voice but I didn’t care.

“You can look at whatever you want to,” I said, flipping my body around so that I could look into his face, my fingers tracing his features, trying to read his expressions in the dark. “You can have whatever you want, just as long as I get you…”

Edward chuckled again. “You already have me, love,” he said, pressing his lips to my hair before going back to his circlet. “I’m yours forever.”

“Well, that’s not until you bite me,” I said, but it was the wrong thing. Edward’s body stiffed underneath me and I let out a sigh. “But you promised, Edward, and I don’t want you to do it right now anyway. We’ve only got two and half more weeks until the wedding, and I’m going to stick it out like I promised. But if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, then Carlisle will do it. I don’t want you to feel guilty because you think you’re the one putting me though that pain because you’re not. It is my choice.” I said, not letting him speak until I was finished.

“Bella,” Edward sighed, one of his hands in front of his eyes now. “I will do it, just give me time. I promise that you will be one of us, soon enough. I just want you to be happy.”

“Edward,” I said, it was my turn to sigh now. We had had this discussion a number of times before, and I had told him this numerous times. “I am happy, as long are you are with me. You’re like a piece of my soul, and don’t say that you don’t have one, because you do.” I leaned in and gave him a soft kiss before turning back into the cradle of his arms, my head on his granite chest. I loved him more than words could say.

Edward was silent for a few minutes, undoubtedly thinking about what to say next. “Bella,” he whispered after a moment. “Are you tired?”

“A little, why?” I admitted. I hadn’t had a good nigh sleep. I kept rolling around restlessly and dreaming of Jacob Black fighting Edward for my heart. That thought just crushed me. I hated to see either of them hurt, and they often were, because I was so selfish.

“It’s nothing. Go to sleep my Bella, and dream good dreams,” he whispered in my ear, nestling his head against mine. He started to hum my lullaby, and I felt my eyes sink slightly.

“Wait, Edward,” I groaned. “Tell what you wanted. I’m not going to be able to sleep if you give me something to think about like that.” I said, knowing that I was using a guilt trip, but I didn’t care.

Edward sighed and wrapped his arms tighter around me. I felt secure. “Would you mind telling me why Alice has a picture in her mind of you not going back to Charlie’s tomorrow?”

I closed my eyes. I suddenly wished that I had pressed him to ask me this. I didn’t want to think about it because it was the reason for my restlessness to being with. I didn’t want to hurt him by telling him that Jacob Black was trying to walk back into my life. I didn’t want to have to fight myself to push him away again, it hurt too much the first time. I would rather hide at the Cullen’s as long as it too. However, I knew that Jake would possible come looking for me here, but at least they could remind him of the treaty to get him off the land. That seemed like the best idea to me.

“Bella please tell me what you’re thinking,” Edward said. He had obviously noticed the distress in my body language though I bet he already knew.

“Alice say my future disappear when I go home tomorrow,” I said in an extremely low tone, it was all that I could manage, but I knew Edward had heard me.

“Ah,” Edward said, suddenly understanding my distress. “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to, Bella, remember that.”

“I just cant hurt him anymore, I cant hurt you anymore. I made my choice and I’m going to stick with it. It would be too difficult to see him now…after all that has happened.” I cringed at the thought of coming home to find him sitting in my living room. I couldn’t do that. I would rather hide at the Cullen’s house forever.

“I know,” Edward said, stroking my hair gently. “Go to sleep, my Bella. I promise everything with be okay when you wake up,” he whispered, giving me a light kiss on the cheek. “I love you.”

“I love you more,” I said, closing my eyes, wanting to believe him. “Just don’t leave me…” I yawned.

“Impossible and don’t worry,” Edward cooed, starting to hum my lullaby again. I quickly drifted into a peaceful sleep for the first time that evening.

“Dad?” I asked, Edward’s cell phone pressed to my ear. “Dad can you hear me?”

“Yeah, Bells, sorry. I’m watching the game with Billy,” Charlie responded. This caused my heart to sink in my chest. However, I felt a little better to hear that Jacob wasn’t there, but Billy would be just as bad to deal with.

I looked over at Edward, who sat next to me on the Cullen’s couch, his arm wrapped tightly around my waist.

“Are you on your way home, Bells? There is something I wanted to tell you.” Charlie said, his voice seeming slightly distant for a moment. I figured that they had to be watching an exciting game.

“Actually, Dad, that’s what I wanted to talk to you about,” I said, biting my lip. Edward gave me a nod, letting me know that he was alright with whatever I decided to do. He would be with me either way. “Alice and I need another day of shopping to get everything finished, would that be okay if I didn’t come home until tomorrow?”

I didn’t hear a response from Charlie for a moment. I could tell he wasn’t happy with this decision. “Sure, Bells, but I really needed to tell you something. It’s important and I think it would be best if I did it in person.”

My heart automatically started to race in my chest. I could feel it pumping blood quickly through my system, trying to keep me from feeling faint. It was too late. The sweeping sensation was slowly starting to come over my body. Edward looked at me with an extremely nervous expression on his perfect features. I couldn’t breathe.

“What is it, Dad? Please tell me…”I begged in a soft whisper. It was all I could muster, my worst fears all coming to mind at what my father wanted to tell me. Charlie was silent, and I could tell that this time he wasn’t distracted by the game; he was trying to figure out how to word what he was going to tell me.

My fear increased as I saw Alice appear through the dinning room, her face nervous and frightened. She looked between me and Edward with saucer like golden orbs, her bottom lip trembling. I turned to look at Edward, his expressing falling. He turned back to me, trying to hide the emotion that he had just gotten from reading Alice’s thoughts, but it wasn’t working. Something was wrong, really wrong.

“Dad?” I asked, my voice and my hands shaking. I was terrified to hear the words that I knew were about to come out of his mouth. I could tell it wasn’t good new by the expressions on Alice and Edward’s faces. I felt the color drain from my face as I waited for what seemed like an eternity to hear Charlie’s voice again.

I closed my eyes as I heard him take a deep breath, grabbing Edward’s hand and squeezing it tightly. I was preparing myself for his words that I knew would crush part of my heart. It was suddenly too quiet. All I could hear was the rapid pounding of my heart, but I couldn’t help that. I wished I hadn’t called. I should have let Alice do it like Edward has suggested.

Charlie sighed. “It’s-It’s about Jacob…”
