Chapter 22

I slowly felt my mind become aware of everything around me, much quicker than it would have if I was human. As I came out of my slumber, everything came back in full force. The light from the window, the sound of birds, small animals, cars, the easy breathing of the person holding me close…

I opened my eyes to see Edward smiling at me. He bent down and lightly touched his lips to mine.

“Good morning,” he murmured quietly as part of his face sparkled with the sunlight coming through the window.

“Morning,” I yawned. I looked to the window, with all the sun shining in, to Edward’s sparkling face. I was immediately aware that something was off.

He saw the panic in my eyes. “Don’t worry. Alice says it’s going to start raining in less than an hour or so, so no one will see me.”

“Is Charlie out?” I asked as I sat up. He moved over to give me some room, sparkling even more as he did so.

“Yes, he went fishing again this morning,” he told me. There, I saw it. There was a defensive narrowing to his eyes.

“What’s wrong?” I demanded.

He looked at me innocently, his bronze hair falling over his face. “Nothings wrong. Why do you ask?” I could hear it in his voice too. He was hiding something.

“You’re not telling me something. Is it Victoria?” I asked. His eyes raised, and I could tell I guessed right.

“Yes, actually. Alice had a vision that Victoria was coming here. Emmett and Jasper are searching the woods for her right now.”

I looked out the window. So Becka and Aaron didn’t kill Victoria like Alex and I thought. She must have gotten away.

“They don’t have to do that,” I whispered almost inaudibly. I didn’t want them to get hurt when I could take care of myself. I wasn’t a weak little girl anymore.

“You don’t need to worry. Jasper and Emmett can take care of themselves. They want to help you,” Edward assured me.

I pursed my lips and stood up. “I need a human moment. I’ll meet you downstairs, okay?”

He grinned and nodded. I grabbed my bag of toiletries and went into the bathroom. I took a quick shower and dried my hair as fast as I could. I got on some jeans and a green sweater I had gotten a month ago with Becka.

Edward was waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs. “Why don’t we go out for awhile?” he said into my hair as he pulled me into a hug.

“That sounds nice,” I breathed as his lips caressed my neck. He straightened up and towed me to his car. Only when we were in it did his eyes widen.

“I forgot you need breakfast. I’ll get you something on the way,” he promised.

I tried to hide my horror. “No, it’s fine. I’m really not that hungry right now,” I reassured him. He stared into my eyes for a moment, and then shrugged.

“Alright then. You do need to eat though,” he reminded me. I knew he was upset that I didn’t eat enough anymore. I just shrugged in reply.

“Where are we going?” I asked, changing the subject quickly. He smirked slightly at me.

“I thought you might like to come to my house,” he told me.

I grinned. “That sounds good,” I said happily. He just chuckled.

We drove on in a comfortable silence. We pulled into the long driveway obscured by ancient trees, and came up to the large old mansion.

Before I could get up, Edward was at my door. He opened it with a smile on his face. I grinned back at him and stood up. We walked hand in hand into his house.

“Hey there Bella,” Emmett said from the couch where he was watching TV. He turned around. “You haven’t been over in what, a week? That’s a new record for you.”

I looked down, a faint blush covering my cheeks. I couldn’t full out blush like I used to be able to. I didn’t have enough blood in me.

“Oh, leave her alone Emmett,” Edward said playfully. I sighed.

“I’m just a source of entertainment for everyone, right?” I asked to no one in particular.

Emmett beamed at me. “That about sums it up,” he laughed. Edward shook beside me, trying to hold in his laughter.

I rolled my eyes. “Oh, go ahead,” I said to him. He burst out laughing, his velvet voice making music with the carefree sound.

Abruptly, he sobered. I looked up at him to see that he was looking up at the ceiling with an angry face.

“What is it?” Emmett asked, serious.

“Alice had a vision of Victoria…” Edward said distantly. I guessed that he was still listening to Alice’s mind.

I looked to Emmett, who cursed. “Jasper and I just got back! We couldn’t find her anywhere!”

“She must have a gift for escaping,” I murmured.

“I think you’re right,” Edward said, putting his arm around me. “She keeps slipping through all of our openings.”

I nodded absently. That must be how she got away from Becka yesterday. Only someone with a gift could escape her.

“Well, I guess I’m off again,” Emmett said as he heaved himself off the couch. I stiffened.

“It’s alright Bella,” Edward whispered in my ear, his sweet breath sending shivers down my spine.

“I hope so,” I muttered.
