Chapter 28

Two people unfamiliar to me chased me in the dark streets, making me get lost in the labyrinth of alleys. It was dark out; new moon was passing. The thunder above rumbled, showing the climax of this moment.

A burst of light above caused by lightning allowed me to better see the two far behind me. Both wore dark grey cloaks, and had crimson eyes, like large rubies. Or human blood.

I tried to get away, becoming invisible. But then I heard a taunting whisper on the breeze…

“You know you can’t run Bella. You know what will happen if you do. We’ll find them and kill them. We’ll bring Edward here though, and make sure he sees your betrayal before he dies, while you watch…”

I never had heard this threat before, but I never would risk doubting it. If I did, they may kill Edward.

And I knew what I needed to know. The two in Seattle were the two vampires chasing me.

With that knowledge, I stopped and turned, letting them come at me. They both grinned macabre smiles, and lunged at me…

I sat up, my chest heaving as I panted. I looked wildly around the dark room, so familiar to me now after spending months in it.

I was with Aaron, Becka and Alex in our cottage. Edward and his family had to go and hunt and Becka had taken the opportunity to have me come over and spend time with my family.

With the nightmare still fresh in my mind, I got up and walked outside. I could hear the others sleeping, and knew I was alone in the woods.

I quietly tripped down to the lake. It was as dark as it had been in my dream, and everything was cast a grey hue. The water looked like a black carpet, gently moving with the wind brushing against it.

Something about my dream had seemed too real, like it was something that would happen soon, and my mind was preparing me for it. But what could happen that would involve such horror?

Whatever it was, I knew it had something to do with the two people. I had seen them in real life, and now in my dreams. Clearly, something important was trying to brake through.

Who were those two? I wish I could just find out like Alice. She could just see them, and then relay everything to the rest of us. It would make things so much easier.

But a part of the dream, where I was in the alley ways, they seemed familiar, as if I had been there before. Walking down the ancient path, going to meet the most terrifying vampires in the world…

I sat up with a gasp. I realized that I recognized one of the two vampires. I didn’t know their name, but I had seen her in Italy. She was one of the body guards that protected Aro, Caius and Marcus. The Volturi had seen the four of us.

With a pang in my stomach, I realized I had given myself away. The Italian vampires had known about Becka, Aaron and Alex already. Now they knew about me. Really, what human could destroy a vampire? It was an obvious answer.

None.
