Chapter 34

He carried me on his back, just like old times. The cool air whipped my face, but it wasn’t unpleasant. It felt like soft hands caressing my face, letting me forget all my troubles for a few minutes. I felt peaceful, and content. And the fact that Edward carried me made it even better.

When we got to the meadow, the sun was just beginning to go down. It cast an orange light upon the field, making everything seem brighter than before. The sun itself seemed larger, and it looked just like my eyes when I shifted.

Edward pulled me off of him, and then pulled me down to sit next to him on the slightly damp grass. I leaned against his cool chest, hard as diamond, just like me.

I closed my eyes with a sigh, and I was forgetting everything except him and me in the meadow. The Volturi, the wolves, the murder I had committed…it all left my mind. I felt peaceful finally.

Edward seemed to have the same thoughts as me. He was relaxed against me, no tenseness like usual. It was like neither of us had any problems and it was just us alone in the world together.

After a long, comfortable silence, he shifted underneath me, pulling me into a sitting position. There was an odd look to his face, like he was sure about something, but unsure.

“Bella,” he asked hesitantly. I looked at him, noting the conflicted emotions on his face. I couldn’t imagine what would cause them. I looked at him curiously. “You know that I love you, right?”

I nodded. “Of course I do. You tell me everyday.” I had a feeling that I knew where this was going, and I felt anxiety hit my stomach. If he proposed…

His eyes scorched into mine, and I forgot what I was just thinking about. I forgot everything, even my name. This really was unfair, him doing this to me. He knew I couldn’t think straight when he unleashed the full force of his eyes on me. I was only dimly aware of my mind screaming at me to get it together, since I was a vampire and this shouldn’t be happening to me still.

Obviously the rest of me disagreed.

“If I asked you to marry me, what would you say?” he asked as he leaned into me, breathing his sweet scent on my face. My mind became even more hazed.

“I think I would say to wait,” I got out, my breath slightly uneven. My mind swam with his closeness.

He raised his eyes at me. “Why would you want to wait?” he demanded playfully, knowing I wasn’t in control of my thoughts. Darn him, he really was being persuasive. I might actually say yes.

“College…and other stuff,” I mumbled, as my mind suddenly came up with something I wanted to push down and ignore. It would only hurt us both. I couldn’t do it, not at all.

“What is other stuff?” he breathed into my hair, pulling me closer to him. I swallowed, trying to regain my coherency and not give anything away. It was hard, but I did it.

“Charlie and Renee…” I trailed off, horror coming into my voice. I was more scared of my mother than the entire Volturi.

“We wouldn’t have to tell them,” he whispered, looking me right in the eye. Just as I opened my mouth to say something, he suddenly leaned in, kissing me hard.

This kiss was different. It was persuasive, and full of the passion he usually kept in check. It seemed that he wanted this bad enough to break his rules.

I kissed him back though, my body taking over. I tangled my hands in his hair, drawing him closer. He fell back, and I was lying on top of him. He put his hands on my face, and leaned it upward so he could kiss my neck and jaw. I opened my mouth with a sigh, and he pulled back.

Both of us were breathing hard now. His eyes were slightly darker than they had been before, but not from bloodlust. It made my muscles tighten slightly.

“Please Bella. We can wait as long as you wish. I just want people to know that you are mine in some way,” he almost pleaded.

The force of his eyes made me see how serious he was, how much it would please him to do this. But I was about to hurt him so bad…

This brought back my idea from earlier. The one I tried to push back and ignore, and hopefully forget. It seemed I hadn’t though.

If I said yes, it would almost make my death seem more real. If I said no, and then died a week later, he would know something was wrong. He would search for me, and get hurt.

So with his safety in mind more than mine, I looked him in the eye and nodded. “Fine,” I said quietly. “I’ll marry you.”

His face was suddenly triumphant, and he pulled me up into the air, spinning me around happily. I laughed, his happiness making my sadness disappear. The sun broke through the clouds, and he sparkled with his joy. It seemed like the sun was shining just for us right now.

Too bad there were clouds on the horizon.
