I loved Edward. I loved him more than life itself.

He was kind.

He was caring.

He loved me.

He was perfect in every single way…

Alright, no, not every way, Edward needed to change a few things if he were to be my version of “perfect.”

He was a bit too overprotective.

Don’t get me wrong, Edward is incredible, next to my kids he is my whole world. But when he throws a curveball at me, for example, “the family friend is a werewolf who doesn’t have much self control and will kill you at any moment.” That is when things can get complicated.

“Edward, are you absolutely sure of all this? I mean it seems a bit…”

“Crazy?” he asked.

“Farfetched is more the word to describe it. I really don’t think Jacob and his sons and daughters are werewolves.”

“So you have no issues with a family of vampires, but when it comes to werewolves it seems farfetched?” he asked with an acidy tone to his voice.

“Well forgive me,” I snarled, “but what is supposed to happen next? A clan of witches living next door? Or how about a support group of Cyclops’s downtown?”

“Bella, why do you have to be so stubborn, you noticed that the Black boy looks different. I know you did. That means he’s going through the change right now. His father went through it sixteen years ago, as did his ancestors decades ago. I don’t know how complicated that is!”

“Edward Anthony Mason Cullen,” I snapped, “don’t take that tone of voice with me! Just because I am still processing the things you have just told me, does not mean you need to be a jerk! Young man, I am not seventeen and naive anymore!” I crossed my arms and narrowed my eyes at him.

To my surprise, he smiled. And then he laughed, he laughed hard, too. I stood up and tried to keep a straight face and not laugh at the cuteness of him laughing like a little boy.

“And what, may I ask, is so funny?” I spluttered, trying to maintain some composure.

“Y-you,” he stuttered, “sound…just…l-like my mo-mother!”

“What?!” he took some unnecessary breaths and calmed down.

“Bella, love,” he smiled, “you sounded just like my mother when I was a boy.”

“I have to kids, Edward. Did you think I would act like a teenager?”

“Point taken.” He kissed me on the lips and kissed back, harder, longing for more. He pulled away and looked at me sternly, “Bella.”

“Sorry,” I paused, “fine. Then what exactly do werewolves do? I mean, do they change at the full moon?”

“Hollywood, love. Werewolves change when they lose their temper mostly, hence the lack of control. They rip right out of their own skin in the process.”

“Well, I don’t see how bad that could be with Al and Jeremy.” I said.

“Not so naïve, eh?” he raised his eyebrows, “Bella, when they lose control, they…“Imprint” I believe is the word. They hurt the one love physically by imprinting on them, supposedly showing love. Barbaric.”

“Well, that’s only when they are love, I see no problem there.”

“Bella, it doesn’t mean they can’t hurt anyone! They could kill a person if they really wanted to.”

“I trust Jacob and Joshua. That’s my final say.”

“Bella-”

“Edward, I trust them.” I said firmly.

“Alright. Just be careful. Alice can’t see anything into their territory…due to the treaty.” But I knew his tone was one of total dissaproval.

“We’ll all be careful, I promise.”

“I know you will, I just worry.”

“Yes, I realize.” I heard a car door slam, the kids were back.

“I better go,” he said.

“No, stay. I think Jeremy and Al will be ok.”

We walked downstairs to find Al and Jeremy putting their jackets on the hooks in the hallway.

“Oh,” said Jeremy, “so you two were alone upstairs? Sorry for the interruption.” Al elbowed him in the stomach. “What?”

“Be nice, jeez, you’re sixteen for Christ’s sake.” She muttered. Jeremy looked like he’d been slapped in the face.

“Come on Al,” he snipped, “are you saying you like him!”

“How was it with Joshua?” I tried to break up the bickering. They both stopped their argument and Al blushed.

“Good,” she muttered, “we…were…um…at the beach, it was fun.”

“Yeah, that Gale Uley is a looker.” Jeremy looked at the ground, guilty.

“All the boys were really nice, too.” Al, too, looked at the floor as she went into the kitchen.

I looked Edward to see that he was stiff and his eyes were black, blacker than I’d ever seen them. He watched Al and clenched his fists, a low rumble erupting in his chest.

“What,” I asked, “What is it?”

“That Black boy, he…kissed her.” He hissed.

“Joshua? Al?” I couldn’t believe it. Al was tomboy, never into teenage guys. I was amazed. “Really?”

“Yes.”

“Oh…wow.”

“Wow?!” he shouted, “that boy kisses her and all you say is wow?!”

“Edward…” I warned.

Too late, Al heard. She came stomping over to Edward and threw the piece of pizza she was heating up right in his face. She had clenched teeth and tears in her eyes.

“Yeah, he kissed me, I kissed him, why do you bloody care?!”

“It’s not safe!” Edward spluttered through frozen pizza sauce.

“Why? Because he’s a werewolf?!” she must have seen the shock on our faces. “Yeah, he told me! Josh is a big mouth! It’s true, so what?! He explained everything and I understand! I actually like Josh, so why is that any of your damn business, Edward?!”

“He could ever hurt you!”

“Why do you care?!”

“Because I don’t want to se you get hurt!”

“Again, why do you care?!” The shouting had reached a point where I had backed off and Jeremy and I stood in the hallway, waiting for the fighting to stop.

“You mean too much to me! You, your mother, and your brother mean the world to me and my family. None of us want to see you get hurt. I don’t want to see you

get hurt.” He looked down at the ground.

I decided to try and settle things down. I hugged Al tight and whispered to her.

“You kissed a boy?”

“Yeah.”

“You like Joshua? I mean really like him?”

“Yes, as much as you love Edward.”

“Alright, we’ll talk later.”

“Ok,” she walked upstairs, “oh, Edward?”

“Yes?”

“Sorry about the pizza in your face.”

“It’s alright. Sorry for upsetting you.”

“Yeah, you better be.” She ran into her room after that.

There was an awkward silence as Edward held me in his arms. I was confused and tired. I now understood why Charlie could be irritable. I was about to collapse in an exhausted heap when Jeremy spoke in a timid voice next to the staircase.

“Um…mom?”

“Yes, Jeremy?”

“Is now the bad time to tell you I made out with Gale Uley?” a smile played at the end of his lips. Not funny.

It was then Edward erupted in a roar and I heard Jeremy yelp and run up the stairs.

This was my life…
