Edward. No, it-it just can’t be! He left, he left. Why was he here? And did he just call me “ma’am”? Oh no! I am not the oldest one in the room here! He is one hundred and twenty-two, I am thirty four!”

“Edward,” I choked out, “nice to meet you.” I smiled sweetly and shook his hand.

“So how old are you?” asked Jeremy.

“Seventeen.” He replied. Then I got an idea and decided to have fun with the situation.

“Jeremy, how about you let Edward have some peaches?”

“Oh no I don’t think-”

“Oh, but you must try them,” I cooed, “They’re so delicious.”

“Here,” Jeremy handed him the peach, “they’re real good.”

“Well, thank you but I’m allergic to peaches.” He lied smoothly.

“Oh, well how about some bananas?”

“Uh, well, I-” Alice handed him a banana and he looked at me. He stared and mouthed please? I just grinned evilly. I saw him lift the fruit to his mouth and eat. He looked like he was in pain. Good. I was just getting warmed up.

“Alice, Jeremy, how about you drive up to La Push and say hi to papa?”

“Mom” said Jeremy, “I really don’t think-” I cut him off.

“It would be nice to see him, kids.”

“What about Edward?” asked Alice.

“Oh, I’ll drive him home, go see papa.”

“Now.” I said in the most parent-like voice I had. Jeremy and Alice left quickly and I went into the kitchen once I heard the car leave the driveway.

“Bella I-” Edward stopped talking when I hit him on the head with one of the buckets. “Hey!”

“You lying, evil, stupid, cruel, VAMPIRE!” I kept whacking him until I began to cry.

“Bella…” I hit him again, but dropped to me knees. He was here, I still loved him. But I had kids, I had a life, I had an age differential. “Bella, it’s you.” He touched my arm and I slinked away. “You left,” there was hurt in his voice, “I-I was too late. I’m so sorry.”

“Yeah, well you should be!” He was the reason I went to Jacksonville! He was the reason I was hysterical for months! He was the reason I met Jack! He…I thought for a minute and realized something I never did. I jumped up and hugged Edward. “Thank you! Thank you so so so so much!”

“Bella?” he asked obviously confused.

“THANK YOU! You gave me my kids!” then I pulled away, “I still hate you, but you gave me my children…thank you.”

“I still love you…” he stopped, wrong thing to say. But he didn’t know how much I wanted to hear it. I loved him after all these many years. I loved him too, more than he knew. “I apologize, I should leave.” He turned to go, but I stood in his way.

“Don’t go again,” I barely whispered, “We should talk.” I led him into the living room and we sat down. “I can’t believe I’m saying this but…I missed you. I think I deserve to know why you came back.” He paused for a long time then looked me square in the eye.

“I couldn’t be without you, I didn’t eat for months. When Emmett and Jasper came to find me they convinced me to return home with them. I thought if I came back then maybe…” he stopped and looked out into space. “I thought you might still love me. I was too late. I’m so sorry.”

“Edward, I need to tell you something. My husband Jack, he…he died three years ago in a car crash. During a police chase he…he shot the tire of the suspect and the car slammed into his. He was alone and killed instantly. But when I got married to Jack, I married him because I loved him. You hurt me so much, that pain can never go away.”

“Bella, I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have said what I said. I-I do love you though, I always did.”

“I always did too Edward, I just can’t. I can’t do this again and have my heart broken. I can’t just pick up were we left off. Even if you would never ever hurt me again, what do you think I would tell my kids?”

“Bella, I will help you tell your kids. I will do anything for you. But it’s your choice. I should just stay away, but I can’t…I just can’t.”

“Edward I need to think. I am so angry right now…Just leave, Edward. I’ll sort this out soon enough.”

“As you wish, goodbye Bella.” With that, he left.

Jeremy POV

“…And don’t you think it’s weird that she would stay home with him? Edward’s seventeen, do you think she has the hots for him? Oh God, what if she does?! I mean I never understood mom, especially since…you know, dad. But this is just weird. Why would she feed him fruit? I just don’t get it!” Alice was hysterically yelling in the car and I had a major migraine.

“Al, I really don’t think mom was being…odd. I just think you might be overreacting to your new environment. Edward’s only a year older than us, how about instead of going “Nancy Drew” on me, we be friends with him and have a good summer. I hear that at least seven baseball teams have drafted us and…”

“JEREMY CHARLES MCCLEARY!” she yelled, “How can the only thing you care about be baseball?!”

“Now wait,” I was becoming very irritated, “I was trying to make this a good situation. You are the one going psycho on me here, not the other way around.”

“Well you sound like a psychiatrist, Jeremy. I don’t need that right now. I’m only saying…CRAP!”

What?!” I slammed on the breaks.

“We forgot the peaches for papa.”

“Jesus Al I thought you were dying! Here, we can go back and get them. This is not a matter of national security.” I made a u-turn and drove back to the house. When we pulled up I saw that mom’s van was still in the driveway. Weird.

“I’ll go in and get them,” Al got out of the car and went up to the house. She stopped abruptly and went around to the back. What was she doing? She came back five minutes later without the peaches and a panicked look in her eyes. She jumped in the car and slammed the door. “Drive!”

“What’s wrong? Where are the peaches?”

“Forget the peaches, drive!” I drove.

“What is your deal?”

“I saw mom in the kitchen hitting Edward with a bucket! Then they went into the living room and he said that he loved her! And she didn’t do anything! She said “what about my kids?” Oh my God! They’re having an affair! He’s only seventeen! Oh my God!”

“Al, settle down,” she has got to be exaggerating, “are you absolutely sure those were the exact words you heard?”

“YES! I heard it and saw it! Jeremy what are we going to do?!” I paused and thought for a minute.

“We’re going to go to La Push, put on happy faces, pretend nothing’s going on, then we’re going to come back home and be happy children, and then once we’ve done that we’re going to see what the hell is really going on.”

“I love you Jeremy.”

“I don’t blame you.” What have we gotten ourselves into now?
