I grinned at her, hoping to be convincing. “Come on, Claire, you can tell me.”

“Nope!”

Her smile was wide, angelic, and extremely irritating. “Please?”

“Nope!”

“This is juvenile!”

“So’re you.”

I stuck my tongue out at her. She smiled only broader.

This was truly frustrating. I couldn’t stand it. What was her big news? What wouldn’t she tell me? I had to know.

And why was she keeping it from me? It couldn’t be caprice. Was she worried about it? Could it be something… “Claire, what is it? Please?”

She looked away. I put a hand on her shoulder, spinning her to face me and staring directly into her eyes… which was a mistake. Instantly, I forgot anything about anything except her. I was lost, and she had won. Again.

Claire turned away for the second time. Obviously, she wasn’t content with defeating me. She also had to taunt me. “Not telling. So, so, so not telling.”

“Why’d you bring it up?”

“I decided we needed some domestic strife. We’ve been getting along so nicely, and I hear arguments are a nessecary part of a healthy marriage.”

“Are you accusing me of being unhealthy?”

“You caught me.”

I laughed quite uproariously and scooped her into my arms. She squeezed my neck.

After a minute, I put her down… and she sighed. Again, she turned away, this time sitting on the ground. Her arms went around to clutch her sides. Unconsciously, I sat beside her, without even weighing the options, not facing her, but close nonetheless. She leaned back to rest against me.

“I’m going to tell you.”

“I knew you would,” I grin, and she doesn’t laugh. “Claire, I love you. You know that, right? I always will.”

“You may have mentioned it once or twice.”

“Seriously, I want to let you know. You have to know. I love you…”

“I love you too, Quil. A lot.”

I sat in silence beside her, waiting. I could scarcely wait for her to speak, and I knew she would, when she was ready.

I never got tired of waiting for her. I had practice, in plenty, and I would always be able to count on how much I loved her. It would get me through. She didn’t talk, though, and the silence grew leaden. Finally, I got bored, even with her leaning against me… “Claire, tell me. Please. I really want to know…” It came out like a whine.

She still wouldn’t turn to look at me, but I held her against me. I could feel her heart racing. She was afraid, and I didn’t know what of.

“Tell me. I promise not to be mad, no matter what it is,” I swore, meaning every word. I was good at my control, especially where Claire was concerned. I’d seen Sam and Emily too often to risk that kind of pain to either of us.

“All right.” She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “Quil… I know it’s really early, and we just got married, and I have to work, and everything, but, but… Quil, I’m pregnant.”
