Deja Vu

or Not on My Watch AU from chapter 3 of New Moon. Bella is taken to Florida with Renee. However, she is even more heart-broken without Jacob Black to cling to. She is sent to an asylum by a distraught Renee. Alice wasn't looking. She'd promised to leave Bella alone. But sometimes the visions come before you ask. She couldn't help it. She sees Bella being sent off and goes to convince Edward she really isn't better off without him. "Because I'm not going to let you do this to her! I know what it's like in there, Edward. Maybe I don't remember it, but... look. What more harm can you do?"

I disclaim. Alice's POV.

Edward whispers his name, again and again. Each time she screams. Finally, he has a little mercy. Instead, he says her name.

She weeps.

“Why do you cry?” he asks, like he honestly doesn’t know.

Jasper is nearby. He holds my hand, practiced as he is with my strange visions turning painful. He knows how to deal with this brand of sorrow, and I am comforted.

She can’t speak. He doesn’t know. He can’t tell the reason. It’s him. It’s all because of him. He left and took everything with her, so much she can’t even speak those words now. She can’t speak at all.

Another thing he’s stolen. Her voice, her heart… What more can he take?

“That idiot,” I mutter and Jazz laughs.

“Our brother?”

“If he ever comes home… remind me to kick his butt.”

I join in the laughter. “I’ll be too busy with that myself, though.” Suddenly, though, I sober. “Oh, Jazz. I’ve never seen anyone so sad.”

“As who? Him, or her?”

“All that pain, Alice. All that… agony. It’s excruciating to remember. It’s like… it’s the worst thing I’ve ever felt,” he whispers. I touch his face gently. His eyes look so woeful.

“I’m sorry…”

“I can’t imagine how it must be for them.”

“For her. I don’t feel sorry for him. It’s his own fault. Bella… Bella never asked for him to leave her.”

“Alice, I don’t think… I don’t think Edward did anything except exactly what he had to, dearest. I don’t blame him. He only did what he had to.”

“He almost killed her. She had to be locked up because she couldn’t do anything! She still can’t…”

“I know she’s your friend. I know it hurts to see her like that, especially after what happened to you… but I know how Edward feels. There have been times when I did things… that made me want to leave.”

I wince.

“Not because I ever stopped loving you!” he protests quickly. “Because I loved you so much. I can’t stand to see anything bad happen to you, and Edward thinks he’s something bad, Alice.”

“Well, he’s my brother, and I know better,” I insist, somewhat cowed.

“Will you let me explain?”

She moans. “Nuh…” It’s the only sound she can make. He ignores it.

“Bella…” she freezes, screaming again. He sighs. “I left…” scream “because I love you.”

She turns her head with a vast visible effort. “No. No. No. No. No. No.” She shakes her head mechanically, repeating again and again.

“Should I go?” You see his pain, though he tries to hide it.

She clutches her stomach and screams.

“Should we go back?” I ask.

“No. He needs to figure this one out himself,” Jazz says, and I know he’s right.

“It’s hard to watch. It hurts to watch.”

“I know. I know, I know. But you have to.”

“I know. I can’t leave him by himself. He’ll only hurt her again, although, in all honesty, what more harm can he do?”

Jasper sighs. “He could actually kill her.”

“I’m not sure that would be so much worse.”
