13. Chapter 13

The rest of my day was a bore fest. I sat in my room and watched just about all of the DVDs we had brought with us. Alec and Lucas joined me for some of it, but they got really bored really fast.

Like one of my friends used to say, “Guys have the attention span of a squirrel on crack.”

I wondered around after that, not tired enough to sleep for the night yet. I don’t know where around the tiny house I went, but I found myself sitting on the piano bench and playing absentmindedly soon enough. Once I was finally able to be ready for sleep, I went upstairs to my new room, and went to bed.

I woke up to the same, unfamiliar sunlight streaming through my windows. The clock on the bedside table said it was eight in the morning. I rolled over to gaze around the room as I had done yesterday. It all still looked a little alien.

There was a soft tap on my door, softer than the knocks yesterday. I crawled out from under the warm blankets, feeling the cool carpet between my toes as I walked to the door. The cold air in my room prickled against my skin and there were Goosebumps up and down my arms.

I opened the door and, not to my surprise, found Ryan standing in the doorway. He was dressed in his usual designer clothes, like me, and his hair was just a little more disheveled than Edwards would have been.

“Good morning sleepy head.” He said stepping into my room.

“Morning.” I said back, trying to stifle a yawn.

I turned around after closing the door to find him sitting on the end of my bed, like Lucas had been yesterday. I walked back over to him, joining him on the end of the bed, and leaned into him, inhaling the sweet scent that used to linger all around my house.

He wrapped his arms around me, cradling my small and curled up body in them. The chill of his touch was welcoming, but my body gave an involuntary shiver. I found it odd how unused to the cool touches and scent of a vampire my body had become in just about a day. He must have felt the shiver, for his arms loosened and one went to rest behind the small of my back. I leaned my head in the small nook of where his collarbone met his shoulder, letting him know that the reaction was involuntary.

We sat like that for a while. It only felt like a couple minutes, but when there was another tap on the door, I glanced at the clock and it read half past ten. I got up to find that my right leg and left arm had fallen asleep. There were tiny, imaginary, needle poking at the drowsy limbs of my body as I half walked, half hobbled to the door. I opened it to find my self face to “face” with Alec’s collarbone.

“Morning.” I said, stepping back as to allow his giant form to enter my ever shrinking room.

“Morning.” He answered with a pleasant smile. I turned to follow him, well, really to go back to sitting in Ryan’s lap, when I noticed Ryan had left. I then remembered that the two of them were not even close to ever being friends and that one would have to stay away from the other.

Alec sat down on the bean bag chair that Lucas had poofed up for us yesterday; I sat in the one to his left.

“So, you hungry?” Alec asked, “I haven’t seen you go down for breakfast yet.”

“No, I’m fine.” I said smiling up at his large, golden face.

“You sure? You should really eat something.”

I didn’t answer, it was the easiest way to end a conversation with Alec that I didn’t want to talk, or argue about.

“Nothing much to do around here huh?” He asked.

I nodded in agreement then said, “No, there’s really not anything too exciting to do yet. Lucas has us covered on food for the most part, and well, everything else too. I bet if we asked him to give us an x-box he would.”

“You’re probably right. Seems like he’d do anything you ask him to. It’s like he’s your slave or something weird like that.” He said with a laugh. I joined in, but mine was half hearted. Alec didn’t seem to notice.

There was a large growl from my right and I turned to see Alec with a hand on his stomach.

“Are you hungry?” I asked, teasing him about his over-social stomach.

“Yeah. I’m starved.” He said.

“When’s the last time you ate?” I asked in amazement.

“’Round seven or eight.” He said laughing at my expression.

“If your stomach keeps acting like that then we’ll be out of food by lunch!” I teased.

“Good thing we’ve got that unlimited food catcher.” He grinned back.

He got to his feet and walked to the door, “You coming?”

“Nah, I’ll grab a bite later.” I flashed him a reassuring smile and he disappeared down the stairs at the end of the hall.

“Ryan.” I whispered, “The coast is clear now.”

He was in my room before I could finish, sitting in the same spot he had been earlier. I walked back over and took the same seat in his lap. His chilling touch not as cold to my skin as it had been before, but there was still the involuntary shiver.

“You should eat.” Ryan whispered into my ear.

“What if I’m not hungry?” I whispered back.

“It doesn’t matter, you still need food.”

“I’ll eat later.” I said leaning my head a little deeper into the nook. He held me as before, but he was now rubbing circles on my arm with his thumb. I found the small motion soothing. I was completely relaxed in his arms, so much so that I closed my eyes and drifted into a midmorning nap.

I awoke to find myself still cradled in Ryan’s arms. His hands were clasped together, making them a steel bar that wrapped around me.

“Someone must either be really tired, or really stressed,” He said looking down at me with his soft golden eyes, “I’m going to guess stressed.” He smiled a classic crooked smile that always took mom’s breath away when Edward did it. I now knew why it did. His smile was the most perfect, most angelic thing I had ever seen; his teeth, perfectly straight and perfectly white, shown like diamonds and his eyes literally sparkled.

I couldn’t help but look at him while he wore that beautiful smile. I lost my train of thought the way mom did around Edward sometimes.

“What were we talking about?” I asked, my mind returning piece by piece.

“We were discussing why you were so stressed recently.” He said, still smiling.

“Well, I guess I’m kind of stressed because of all this.” I waved my hand around the room and pointed out the window, “I guess I’m not used to moving without everyone else. I miss them too. I talked to mom and Edward yesterday. They were really worried about where I was and who I was with. I think they think I’m in Denali, with Tanya and the others.

“I just didn’t want them to worry, so I gave them as little information as possible, but being completely truthful. I said I was with friends who we had known for a while. Edward and I have different definitions of a while. I also said I couldn’t tell him where I was, and why. He didn’t like that.

“Bella was overjoyed to just know I was alive, for now anyway. Once she gets her head, who knows what she might want to know. I just really don’t like not being able to talk to them.” I finished sighing and leaning into Ryan again. He was now stroking my hair, the way Bella did.

“I know how you feel. I felt the same way with mom and dad, after the transformation. It was worse for Chad I suppose, being a year younger than me. At least we had each other back then. I wonder how he’s dealing now. He erased all memory of the plan he had right after he left the room I think. There’s no way he could possibly know where we are, he must be scared.

“After I was transformed, oh it was torture; I wanted to go home so much, to see mom and dad, and you again. But Carlisle and them wouldn’t let me within a fifty mile radius of any city for a long time. They promised me that everyone else was fine, that you were okay and at home with Bella and Edward. But I still worried.

“The most impossible images and scenarios came into my head every moment I wasn’t occupied with feeding or fighting for control. I knew all of them could never happen, but then I also wondered. I wondered a lot about what could happen; the things that would happen to Chad and me, to Ang and Ben, to you. I worried about you most of all I think. You were just so small, so helpless. You were so… so… vulnerable.

“I hated all of the images of things that could happen. I wanted to be sure they wouldn’t happen. That’s when my power showed up. I was fretting over random things in a dark forest somewhere in the middle of Brazil one night, and then, a moment later, I was in the middle of a very barren looking desert. I later found out that I had traveled to the Sahara to make sure that no one was shoving your head under the sand to suffocate you. I was relieved when I didn’t find anyone with you, based on all of my theories of torture my mind had created.

“I stepped into the future a lot after that. I checked on my parents, who will be doing fine for the next forty years or so. I checked on you, to see what might happen. When I did try to find you, you weren’t there. I looked with Edward and Bella, you weren’t there, with the rest of your family, every other foster parent I could think of, I even checked with the Volturri. I couldn’t find you anywhere. That’s when I decided to return to the present and find you myself, here, while nothing could really get to you.” He finished.

I held my breath, not knowing what to say.

“Liz? I’m sorry if that was a little too much for you.” He said softly, his voice just above a whisper.

I tilted my head so I could face him.

“It’s okay,” I whispered, “I- I… I just didn’t expect that you went through all of that. Why did you want to find me so much?”

“Because, you were my little sister, I couldn’t let anything bad happen to you. I wanted to make sure that you could live as close to a normal life as possible.”

“Now you’re starting to sound like Edward. He hates himself you know. He doesn’t think he deserves Bella; that he doesn’t deserve to exist.”

He gave a small laugh. It was hard for everyone to see Edward’s logic, unless you got in his head a lot; even then it was hard to understand why he felt so bad.

“Edward deserves to exist so much more than the Volturri do.” He whispered playfully, “He’s done what no other vampire ever could, he’s loved a human, and he has a beautiful, biological daughter who loves him with most or all of her heart.” He finished, tapping me on the nose. I felt like I was five.

“Do you still see my as your little sister?” I asked, my mind returning to my original question.

“I consider you a little more than just a sister,” He whispered back, “you’re one of the first non-vampiric friends Chad and I have ever had. And…I think I might… feel something… more.”

Oh no! Please say he’s not “In love” with me too! That makes possibly four guys if Jeremy’s treatment in the beginning counts for anything at all. I can’t handle four of them. I can hardly manage three! Now what?

He looked down at me for a minute, I fought with myself, trying to not meet his gaze and let him see how undecided I was about this type of stuff. I lost. My eyes drifted up to his wondering gaze, I couldn’t answer his mental question if I felt the same way about him or not, how am I supposed to tell him that I’m already engaged to Lucas, and I think I might be in love with Alec, and Jeremy’s still after me? He’d leave, and I didn’t want him to. I wanted him to stay here with me, forever.

I was saved from his gaze by a loud ping from my laptop, announcing I had mail. I reluctantly got off of his lap and walked over to my desk to see what was up.

It was Lexi, and she had flooded my phone’s inbox as well as my e-mail, sending me the same thing over and over again, asking where I was and if I wanted to hang out again today. I could picture her sitting at her desk and video messaging me asking the same thing over and over again. I turned on my camera and microphone before she had the chance to send the video, and invited her on ichat.

“Hey Liz!” She shouted in greeting.

“Hi Lexi, how are you today?”

“I’m fine, hey, where are you?!? I’ve called your cell like a bazillion times, I even called your house! Your dad picked up and said you weren’t there. I’ve already been to Francis’s and the park, pond, and Eric and Aaron haven’t seen you either!” She paused and looks at the room behind my face on her screen. She then gasped.

“Where are you?”

“Away.” I answered.

“Were you kidnapped?” She asked frantically, just like Lexi to over react to everything.

“No.”

“You ran away?!?”

I didn’t answer, I instead changed the topic.

“So, where’d you think I went?”

“I don’t know, now I think you’re back in America, in a hotel or someplace maybe. Am I close?”

“Not even. You’re ice cold.”

“So you’re still on this side of the planet?”

“Yep.”

“Will you tell me where?”

“Nope.”

“Aw come on! That’s not fair! Don’t you remember when I ran away to your house? You promise you’d tell me before you ran, if you ever did, and that you’d tell me where.”

“Honestly, I wish I could tell you where I was, but I have no idea.”

“WHAT?!? You don’t know where you are?”

“Not exactly. No.”

“Is someone else there with you?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“Some old friends.”

“But I’m like your oldest and best friend!”

“I have other friends too. Think about it Lex, I moved to the states for a year, I made other friends, and I’ve been there before.”

I had finally told her some of the truth, now to see how she’d react.

“Wha- WHAT?!? You’ve lived in the US before?”

“Yeah.”

“When?”

“When I was like from one to three.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t know how you would react.” I’m not like Alice. I thought.

“Is there anything else I should know about you?” She asked suspiciously.

“There’s some other stuff I’ve never told anyone before.” I told her plainly.

“What is it? I now know you’re super strong. Are you like some kind of superhero?”

“What if I’m the bad guy?” I asked, quoting Edward.

“I don’t know, but I’d still like to know.”

I glanced over at Ryan, his face was perfectly masked.

Don’t tell her. He thought, if she knows, the Volturri would kill her if they found out who your friends were. But you can probably tell her about the speed, just not the pedigree and perks.

I turned back to the computer.

“Who is that?” Lexi asked before I could answer her earlier question.

“Ryan.” I said.

My phone then started ringing.

“Can I take this Lex?” I asked.

“Fine.”

I reached for my phone, “Hello?”

It was Edward, “So, Ryan’s with you?”

“Dad! I can’t believe you’d do that! Why are you… um? Why?”

“I want to know where you are.” He answered.

“Dad,” I wined, “I’m fine! How many times do I have to tell you that?”

“It won’t matter how many times you tell me, I’ll still worry.”

“Bye dad.” I said hanging up and turning my phone off.

“Hey Lex, I think I’ve got to go. A friend is calling from downstairs.”

“Okay, but I still want to know what’s up.”

“I’ll tell you later, Bye.”

“Bye Lizzie.”

I then turned my computer off.

“Ugh.” I said as I walked over and fell face first onto my mattress and sighed. Ryan thought my annoyance was amusing. He laughed.

“Hey,” I said into the sheets, “I never laugh at you when you’re angry, do I?”

That shut him up for a while.

The rest of the day I was glued to my computer trying to answer all of the questions Lexi was asking me. One message at a time. Ryan offered to help, but I turned him down. Lexi could tell who was typing; she made that very clear when I sent her a prank message from Megan’s account.

Lucas came in halfway through the e-mail trivia and was shocked that I had contact to the outside world.

“You were the one who put in a wifi system.” I reminded him

“Yeah, but I never thought you would use it for trivia.”

“Well I’m not the one asking the questions. Lexi is.”

“She sure is curious isn’t she?” He asked looking at the two or three hundred unread messages.

“Yeah. Once she’s picked a topic, she sticks to it for about a month. It gets really old after a while. Even with the super speed typing.”

“Are you a wizard?” He read one of the most recent questions aloud.

I typed the answer without looking at him.

“She’s guessing?” He asked.

“Yeah. We’ve been through superman, superwoman, the incredible hulk, the other super heroes, but she hasn’t started on villains yet. She’ll probably never get it totally right seeing that I’m a half-breed, but she’ll get the mythical creature part eventually.”

“Won’t that endanger your life even more if she knows.” He asked.

“No. As long as I don’t tell her I’m not one completely. She might have to suffer, but Edward promised to keep an eye on her for me.”

“Hey, I um, came to ask you something.” Lucas said after a while of typing.

“Yeah?” I asked not looking up from the screen.

“Somewhere private maybe?” He suggested.

“Okay.” I got up from my desk, “I need to stretch my legs anyway.”

Ryan stood up to follow us out.

“It’s okay Ryan. I’ll be fine. Lucas is pretty powerful anyway.” I said to reassure him.

Ryan stepped sideways to let us pass; Alec stuck his head out of his door.

“Where are you going?” He asked.

“For a walk.” I answered, “Alone.”

“Fine.” Alec said ad closed his door. Ryan sat down on the back porch to wait as Lucas and I disappeared into the woods.

It didn’t take us very long until we reached the rocky beach that I could see from my windows. It was cooler out here than it was in the trees. Lucas led me over to where there was a large pile of boulders that jetted out into the water. Scaling the rocks was easy for both of us, and we sat on the very edge of the farthest rock.

“So, what did you want to talk to me about?” I asked.

“Well, you see, there’s this ‘party’ next week in Nymth, and I was wondering if you’d like to go, with me. You know, as a friend. It would be a great time to meet my parents, Darren and Gina, they’re great. You’d love them.”

“Wait, I thought your ‘parent’s’ names were Klagomon and Aserath.”

“Those are their real names, but they change them to more common ones every century or two. So, do you want to go?”
