Mending hearts or breaking them?
It’s been seven years since Bella has left Forks. Edward decides that a trip to Forks is due, and Bella agrees. But how are the residents (aka Jacob) of Forks going to act?
Obviously not well.

9. Chapter 9

I struck a fire with two sticks within seconds. I smiled as I remembered attempting to make a fire as a child. It is almost impossible to strike a fire with sticks as a human. Edward tossed parts of a body into the fire. I cringed as I heard the pieces burn. I helped Edward gather the rest of the pieces and threw them into the flaming fire.
I glanced over at Jacob’s still form. His strong heartbeat could still be heard over roar of the fire. I quickly walked over to him.
“Edward, just give him a quick look over please.” I said shakily
He strode over and took my hand. He squeezed it reassuringly. I smiled weakly. This was not an experience I would like to repeat. I took a few moments to calm myself as Edward bent down and examined Jacob.
Edward glanced up at me. “He’ll be out for a little, and he’s going to have a major headache when he wakes up, but otherwise, no harm done” He grinned.
Edward picked him up and we ran slowly in silence towards the Black house.
Never mind the treaty; I told myself, Jacob needs to get home. I’m sure they’ll understand. We were just about to cross the border when a huge wolf leapt at us baring his teeth.
“Sam” Edward said coolly, stepping closer to me. The wolf jumped out of sight but was back within moments, as a tall Sam.
“What are you leeches doing here?” He hissed, glaring suspiciously at Jacob’s body in Edward’s arms.
“He’s fine. Jacob encountered a rather irate vampire. You dogs killed her mate a few years back, she wanted revenge. She’s gone now.” Edward explained.
“I always knew this fascination with Bella would lead to trouble.” Sam muttered under his breath.
Edward and I glared at him.
Sam snatched Jacob away as gently as possible.
“Thanks for you help, leech, but we don’t need your help anymore” Sam hissed and strode away.
I watched him go away with my mouth hanging open. Edward closed my mouth with his fingers.
“DOES HE KNOW WE JUST SAVED JACOB?!?” I all but screamed
“He just doesn’t understand.” Edward rubbed circles in my hand soothingly. I sighed. “Why don’t we just take a quick look at Charlie, then leave? This visit was a bad idea” I said dejected.
“No love, it wasn’t. I’m glad we came to see Jacob; at least he knows how you are. And tomorrow you will be relieved you came and saw Charlie.” Edward reasoned. “Why don’t we stay tonight, watch Charlie in the morning, and then go home?” he asked.
Suddenly I straightened. “Edward! We should go to our meadow!” I said excitedly.
Edward grinned his award winning smile.
Billy’s POV (Yes I know, this is a new one, but bear with me)
I waited patiently at the kitchen table for Jacob, entertaining myself with the daily crossword puzzle. The eerie silence was suddenly broken by a loud knocking at the door. I quickly wheeled myself to the door and unlatched it. Sam burst in with a lifeless Jacob in his arms, cast a glance at me, strode into the living room, and set Jacob down on the couch.
I got there as fast as possible
“He’s fine” Sam said gruffly. I went over and cast a sad glance at my son’s figure. I sighed.
“What happened Sam?” I asked.
“Apparently some vampire tried to seek revenge and Edward and Bella ‘saved’ him” He said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
That’s probably what happened, even if Sam doesn’t believe so. Those are good kids, Bella and Edward. Not kids exactly. But they returned my Jacob safely so I cannot possibly doubt them.
I sighed. “Thank you Sam. I can take care of him now”
“You must tell him they have left,” Sam said darkly.
“I see no reason to lie to my own son!” I protested strongly.
“NO REASON? They are the CAUSE of every trouble that has ever happened in Jacob’s life and HERE!” Sam shouted furiously, his eyes churning with anger.
He sat down, seeming to regret his words. “I think it would be for the better Billy, especially for Jacob”
I agreed, seeing the reason behind the heated words.
“Please leave Sam. You can check in on him in the morning.” I said.
Sam nodded and left without another word.
I sighed once again. Sometimes I was not sure Sam was the best leader for the group.
I watched Jacob all night, thoughts raging through my head as to the safety of my son. Vampires were dangerous creatures, but Bella can’t be dangerous. She was too kind as a human to be cruel.
Jacob stirred, and moaned. His eyes cracked open.
“Good morning Jacob! How are you feeling?” I asked forcing cheer into my voice.
My head hurt immensely.
Billy forced a greeting out. It was heavily forced.
“Good morning Jacob! How are you feeling?”
“Not so great” I squeezed my eyes waiting for the pounding to go away. It didn’t.
CRAP, I suddenly remembered.
“Dad, where’s Bella?” I started to panic and I sat up. Stars swarmed my eyes
Billy pushed me down gently.
“Edward and Bella left” he said nonchalantly.
“WHAT?” I sprang up, ignoring the persistent hammer in my head.
“Jacob sit down” Billy commanded.
I obliged. “WHY?” I demanded.
“I don’t pretend to know the thoughts of vampires Jacob. They left, and told me to tell you they weren’t coming back” Billy’s coolness unnerved me.
I slumped back defeated. Why? Bella would come back to see if I’m alright…I think. This doesn’t make any sense. And we didn’t even resolve anything. Bella never leaves things unresolved. Unless… Sam.
“Sam” I muttered out loud.
As if on cue, someone knocked on the door.
Billy raised his eyebrows and Sam walked in.
I almost leapt at him, but Billy put his hand on my shoulder. I emitted a low growl.
“Jacob, I forbid you from going after them. They will hurt you. We can’t afford to lose another member of the pack, besides, your father needs you.” Sam said trying to keep me under control.
You can’t tell me what to do! I shouted silently
Yes, I can. I am the alpha, the position you so willingly gave up. Anyways, when have I ever failed you or been wrong? Sam replied
I glanced at Billy, who was watching me and Sam carefully.
I glared at both of them.
“I won’t go after them. But that does NOT mean I’m happy.” I stated and folded my arms. The alpha had spoken and it was almost impossible to break his orders.
Sam forced a smile. “Thank you Jacob. I’ll come back to check on you later. Get some rest.” He patted me and Billy escorted him outside.
I slowly went up to my room feeling defeated.
The question ‘why?’ kept ringing in time to the pounding in my head.
