Tears Don't Fall

Edward must leave Bella, but Bella is reluctant to let him go.
Bella is overwhelmed with sadness. Then, she finds out she is plagued with an incurable illness. Can she keep Edward by her side until the very end? This takes place in around chapter 2 of New Moon. I wrote this based on nothing, so forgive me if the information is inaccurate. DISCLAIMER: All characters, real or fake, belong to Stephenie Meyer. Mmm... I always wondered what would happen in these kinds of situations.

Even sitting beside Edward, nearly a foot apart from him, I felt closeness to Edward. He was still my Edward, in my mind. He had not changed, even though now, he did not know who I was.

“Edward.” I spoke his name. He turned to look at me. “I love you.” I whispered, wishing on every candle on every birthday cake I ever had. An unidentifiable expression crept across his face.

“I’m sorry, Bella. For all the pain I’ve caused you.” Edward said. Confusion rippled through my shoulders. “I never stopped loving you. I have always loved you. I always will love you.” He wrapped his arms around me and closed the foot-long gap between us. Tearless sobs erupted deep in his chest.

“Edward.” I whispered, my hands moving to hold myself even closer to him. “Why?” The rush of understated pain moved through my chest. I thought I was going into cardiac arrest once again.

“When I tried to leave you… I lied about everything. I never stopped loving you - and I would stay only as long as it was good for you. After the birthday party, I took a step back and realized how much I was holding you back from. I didn’t want you to be unable to live a full, normal life.” Edward said exasperated.

“How could you ever think that?” I demanded. “How could you think that leaving was good for me?”

Edward laughed nervously. “I am an idiot.” He whispered in my ear. I wanted so badly to twist around and stare at his flawless face. “And then you collapsed. Carlisle convinced me that leaving would not be the best thing to do. But I promised you peace without reminders. Keeping Carlisle’s advice in mind, I convinced him to play along to my foolish plan. We would pretend like we had never met you before.”

“How could you just… Do you know the pain…” I began, interrupted by Edward when he laid one cool finger against my lips.

“I did not think of this at the time. Please remember, that I only tried to do what was good for you. I had absolutely no consideration for the aftermath.” Edward stared at me. “Now… Now… You’re going to leave me. Did you consider that?” His glass smooth finger ran across my lips, causing an electric feeling underneath my skin.

“I love you, Edward. Change me, and I’ll be with you forever.” Pain meant little to me now. All I wanted; all I needed was Edward. I could deal with bone-crunching pain.

“I won’t do that, Bella. Understand that - I love you. I will not end your life.” Edward said, his amber eyes darkening with each passing moment.

“I’m going to die, Edward. Very soon.” I reminded him. The fact that I knew death was coming sooner and sooner for me did not frighten me. The only thing that frightened me was that I would lose Edward forever in the result of death.

“No, Bella! I refuse to condemn you to an eternity of night!”

“Maybe then you don’t love me as much as I thought,” I whispered, almost believing this for myself. I began to shake with distress.

“Bella…” His voice was clogged. He did not finish his sentence, or maybe, I just didn’t hear him. A crippling pain arose in my chest. Then I began to slip into unconsciousness.

I hear some noise. Lady, come from that nest
of death, contagion, and unnatural sleep.
