I cannot go to your wedding. I’m very sorry, but I just don’t think I could handle you locking lips with that leech. If you really wish for me to go, come down to La Push and talk to me. And please, leave HIM behind if you do. You should be happy to hear that Sam, Jared, Paul, Leah, Quil, and Embry can make it.
I hope to see you later, Jacob
I read over Jacob’s note at least twenty times. I couldn’t seem to make any sense out of it. I knew Jacob was upset, but for him to miss my wedding, that’s a bit extreme.
I checked my watch. It was a quarter to six. I only had an hour and fifteen minutes before Edward would get here. He never came a second past seven.
I did the math in my head. It was ten minutes to La Push, if I drove fast. So there and back would be twenty minutes. That gave me a little under an hour to talk to Jacob. I’ll take that.
I hurried down the stairs, taking two steps at a time.
When I reached the bottom, Charlie looked up from his place on the couch. “Hey Bells, why in such a hurry?”
“imgoingtolapushtoseejacob.” I replied, my words were stringing together as she fumbled to pull on my shoes .
“Come again?” he asked, “slower this time.”
I scowled, parents sometimes. “I said I am going to La Push to visit Jacob.” I said it as slowly as I could, just to annoy him. I even threw in a few hand motions to get the point across.
“Ohhh, Jacob! That’s good; you never hang around him anymore. Nowadays you spent all your free time with Edward.” There was venom in his voice when spoke Edward’s name. He never really got over the fact that Edward and I were getting married.
“Mmhm, anyway I’ll see you later tonight.” I shouted just as I left out the front door.
As soon as I got into my old truck I flipped open my cell phone and punched in Jacob’s phone number. The phone began ringing as I fired up the car. The engine roared to life, but then pitifully sputtered out. “Come on..” I grumbled, turning the key again. This time, the engine roared and didn’t go out.
“Yes!” I exclaimed.
“Uh, hello, Bella?”
“Oh! Jacob!” I said, not realizing he’d picked up the phone. I blushed, not knowing how much of my celebration he’d heard. “Sorry, I didn’t realize you picked up.”
Jacob laughed softly.
“Anyway, I got your letter, I’m coming.” A smile was beginning to form on my face. “Now.”
“And the leech?”
My face suddenly hardened. “I’m coming alone.”
“Great, see you soon.” The long, obnoxious beeping on the other line told me that Jacob had hung up. By that time, I was already more than halfway to La Push.
My mind panicked on her short drive to La Push. Images of Edward danced happily in my mind, but were constantly cut off by images of Jacob, smiling and shaking his long black hair. I was going to marry Edward, but I knew that I still had feelings for Jacob, even if I don’t want to. By the time the horrifying thought ceased, I was already pulling into Jacob’s house. Jacob was waiting outside on the small porch, which didn’t surprise me a bit. Though he had been laughing on the phone, his face was hard and serious. His lips were pulled into a tight line and his eyebrows were furrowed.
I slammed my truck’s door shut, a little more than necessary, and strolled up to the porch. “Jacob, I thought you were okay with all this.”
Jacob’s expression remained the same, but he turned and faced me. “I thought so, too.”
I fought the urge to wrap myself in his arms, the way we used to, but I knew if I did, it would only be harder for him and me. “Jacob, what’s wrong?”
“What do you mean?”
I gave him a, you-know-just-what-I’m-talking-about, look. “What did I do? Why are you upset?” My voice crackled a little.
“You didn’t do anything. I did. I let this happen. I should’ve never-“
I cut him off. “What are you talking about? You never let anything happen. Marrying Edward is my choice. You had nothing to do with it. Don’t blame yourself.” I was panicking a little. Jacob didn’t need to blame himself for everything I’ve done. It’s my fault he’s sad and upset. It wasn’t like him to blame himself.
“No, Bella, you don’t understand.” His hard expression smoothed out. His eyes became mournful and he quickly looked away, avoiding my eyes. “It’s MY fault I ever loved you. I should’ve known something like this would happen. I should’ve known I’m not good enough. I’m not up to your perfect-as-Edward standards.”
I was getting upset by now, too. For him to say she thought he wasn’t good enough was insulting. “Do you really think I’m that shallow?! I’m sorry Jacob, but Edward was here first. It’s not your fault I love him and it’s not mine either. It just happened.” I checked my watch. Six-forty, I only have twenty minutes to get home.
“I’m sorry Jacob, but I have to get home.” I snapped as I turned to face the car. To my surprise, Jacob said nothing. I was a little upset by this as I walked in silence to my car. I would have to leave with no goodbye..
“Jacob?” I said, turning around just as I was about to open the car door. But Jacob had already gone inside. My eyes reddened and began to water. I choked back sobs as I hopped into my car and sped home.
By the time I got home, it was six-fifty-six, and I was bawling. Jacob’s pain was my pain and it was even worse that it was me who caused his pain. I ran inside, ripping the front door open and dashing through the kitchen. Dashing through the family room, past Charlie, sitting on the couch.
“Bella what happened?” I heard Charlie get up from the couch as I ran up the stairs, two at a time. I ignored his question and darted into my bedroom, slamming the door shut behind me.
I had a complete breakdown in my bedroom. I collapsed on my bed the second I was inside, and alone. Tears streamed down my face, and just kept coming nonstop. “J-J-J.” I sputtered between sobs. “J-Jaacooob!”
I hadn’t noticed when Edward silently slipped in my room. I hadn’t heard him when he’d asked me what was wrong. I didn’t even feel him when he sat next to me, rubbing my arm and forehead. All my thoughts were centered on Jacob.
I’d never been this upset about Jacob before. Maybe I have, but I never reacted so badly.
“Bella? Bella, are you alright. What happened?” Edward’s soothing voice finally processed in my head and I finally felt him lying next to me with his arms wrapped protectively around my body.
I ignored Edward’s continuous questioning. I buried my head into his thick wool sweater and wrapped my arms around his waist. It was in this position that I sobbed myself to sleep that night.
