My head was pounding like I had a hangover, and honestly I wish that was the reason for it hurting. My eyelids felt like they weighed a ton and it took me many tries to open them. My vision was still a little fuzzy but my eyes were starting to focus. Jacob’s face slowly began to grow less and less blurry and sharper by the second.

“There you are.” Jacob smiled down at me.

I tired to sit up but he placed his hands on my shoulders and held me down on the couch, “Where do you think you are going?”

“What happened?” I asked becoming aware of my surroundings. I looked down at my once again bruised arm and clearly remembered, “Oh,” I moaned.

“Get me some ice will ya?” Jacob asked someone I didn’t see. I again tried to sit up on the couch but his hands would not budge from my shoulders. “Stay there.”

“Well that….that guy hit you and I sort of flipped out.” Jacob fought for the right words.

“Well did you whip him good for me?” I asked with a small chuckle but then changed to a moaned forgetting about my soar body.

“Let’s just say he won’t be around here anytime soon. Who was he by the way?” Jacob asked handing me the towel with ice.

HE was an ex. A very stupid me used to go out with him,” I said placing the ice to my pounding head, “I’ll explain later.”

“Okay, do you think you can get up?” Jacob asked cautiously.

“I have been trying but you won’t let me.” I said as I glared at his hands still on my shoulders.

“Sorry about that, I didn’t want you to get up too quick and get a head rush and black out again.” Jacob said helping me sit up on his couch.

“You have some explaining to do. What was that earlier?” I asked with a hushed voice not knowing who was in the house with us.

“I’ll explain that later also.” Jacob said with a wicked smile.

I stayed at Jacobs house until my parents got home, of course Jacob had to walk me across the street. I promised to meet him after my parents were settled for the night and he did the same. I also swore that I was not going to tell my parents about what I saw either.

I went up to my room quietly and gathered clean clothes and headed to my bathroom. As I waited for the shower got get hot I surveyed the newest damages. HE only managed to leave me a small cut on my cheekbone and a new bruise on my wrist, where he grabbed me. I would be able to get away with saying I got them at work today and not freak my mom out.

The hot water helped unwind my tight and knotted muscles. I must have been in longer that I thought because eventually the water started running cold and it shocked me enough to get out of the haze I was in. I threw on a pair of sweat pants and a tank top and headed downstairs to get something to eat.

My mom was finishing up cooking when I arrived at the bottom of the steps, “Oh good, I won’t have to yell.”

“What’s the masterpiece tonight?” I asked with a laugh, it had been such a long time since my mother made anything edible for any meal so I was a little skeptical.

“It’s just spaghetti, I can’t mess that up.” She said pouring out the pasta into a colander in the sink.

“How was your first day at work, noting too bad happened?” she asked putting some noodles on my plate.

I got a small flash back of the day and a shiver went down my spine, she noticed so I had to make something up on the spot, “Nothing too exciting happened.”

After my parents were in their room I snuck out of the back door and went to meet Jacob. Out of all my crazy things I did, sneaking out of the house was never one of them. I only had to go just in the edge of the woods before I saw Jacob.

On both sides of Jacob stood Quil and Embry, “Where’s the party?”

“I need some help explaining the whole wolf thing, so I brought them along to help. Don’t worry they will leave when I’m finished.” Jacob said and the boys nodded in agreement.

After what seemed like hours I learned everything from phasing to imprinting which only a few from the pack have done so far. Embry offered to show me a demonstration on how they phase but I remembered from earlier so I was all good, so the other two left leaving me with Jacob.

“Where so I start?” I asked tearing a blade of grass apart.

“Well the beginning is always the best, where did you meet such a foul person?” Jacob asked sitting across from me playing with a stick.

“A mutual friend of my one brothers. He was actually charming in the start but then he just grew mean and more pissed at me everyday. One day he got so mad, I still don’t know about, and he knocked me down a flight of stairs.” I said twisting my wrist around, “That’s how I got this, I had a concussion, got 30 something stitches and multiple bruises.”

“Didn’t your parents do anything about it?” Jacob asked looking down at my scar.

“I told them I fell when I was sleepwalking. They didn’t really believe me, but they went along with it.” I said wiping away a tear that strolled down my face.

“I went with him for almost a year. I was too afraid that if I left him he would hurt me even more than what he had done before. Finally after threatening my life my parents stepped in and my dad got a transfer and we moved here.” I told him pulling back my arm.

“Monroe I’m so sorry,” Jacob said leaning up to me, “I swear that if he ever comes back I will hurt him.”

“Thanks Jacob. It means a lot to me.” I told him, “We should be getting back, and we have to work tomorrow.”

I started back towards the house and almost made it passed the clearing of the woods when I felt Jacob take my hand.

“Monroe I mean what I say, if he ever steps foot around here or touches you..” Jacob trailed off.

Anger flashed in his eyes and my hand started shaking. I looked down at it and quickly recalled what I learned earlier about what happens when they get angry.

“Jake, calm down. He won’t come back any more,” I tried to settle his nerves.

“But what if he does, what if I miss him and he hurts you again?” Jacob went on and his entire body was shaking now.

I let go of his hand and gently grabbed his face, “Look at me Jake. He won’t be back, thanks to you. I’m finally free.”

“You mean it?” he searched my eyes for reassurance.

“I promise, you are my guardian angel, just in a wolfs costume.” I laughed.

I looked deep into his eyes trying to convince him that I was telling the truth. I must have done something right because he stopped shaking and wrapped his arms around me. “Then, I promise to protect you.” Jacob said leaning down to be eye level with me.

“I like the idea of you protecting me.” I said with a smile.

He smiled back at me and I got lost in his eyes. We just stood in the middle of the woods smiling and holding each other for a while. A tornado could have come through and we would still be there holding each other.

After a while gravity or cupid what have you made us grow closer and we kissed. His hands traveled up and down my back finally resting on my hips. I wrapped my arms around his neck pulling him closer to me, so that I wouldn’t have to be on my tipped toes. It felt right being so close to him, I felt so secure being with Jacob. It had been so long since I felt secure that I forgot the feeling.
