More Than Words Can Say

By iluvedwardcullen

He sits in class, waiting for the teacher to arrive, listening, but not hearing, Quil and Embry endlessly about Jacob and the pack. He’s thinking about all the homework he has to do to tonight, before he’s allowed out with the boys on patrol. They realize that he’s not really listening, and try to pull him back to reality.

“Jared!” says Quil.

“Yeah?” he answers, coming out of his reverie.

“What’s up?” asks Embry.

He’s about to answer, when something takes his breath away. He looks up at the sound of someone walking in the door, and then he can’t look away. Kim.

She’s laughing as she enters the room, talking to her friends. He can’t stop looking at her russet-coloured skin, and her long eyelashes. She’s so beautiful. It’s like he’s never seen her before.

He’s definitely never noticed her this way before, even though she sits next to him everyday in class. He stares, and suddenly he realizes what is happening. Imprint.

“JARED!” an impatient Embry finally yells.

Jared looks up at him, for a second, shrugs, and then turns his gaze back to Kim.

Quil and Embry stare at him. They follow the direction of his adoring eyes and see Kim. They look at each other confused, until Quil understands.

“I think he’s imprinted, Embry!” he whispers.

Embry stares back, shock on his face. The teacher enters the room, and calls the class to order. Embry slowly turns to face the front, still wondering about his friend’s strange behaviour.

Kim takes her seat beside Jared. She notices him staring at her, and turns away, blushing. She tries to concentrate on what the teacher is saying, but keeps getting distracted by Jared’s romantic gaze. She can’t figure out what’s going on. He’s never taken much notice of her before.

He looks into her nervous eyes, and takes a deep breath. He has to speak to her, otherwise he’s going to look like a staring idiot. He swallows, and she turns to look at him. She blushes again, waiting for him to speak.

“Kim?” he asks, his voice cracking.

“Yes, Jared?” she answers, whispering.

“D’you wanna go out with me tonight?” he asks, dreading her answer.

“I guess,” she replies, a little weirded out by this sudden show of affection. Inside her heart is leaping, and she can’t seem to slow it down.

Jared breathes a sigh of relief, and says, “I’ll talk to you after class, ok?”

She nods, and he is finally able to concentrate on what is happening in class, his heart singing underneath his light shirt.

He sits in the movie theatre, barely breathing. He’s never been this close to Kim before, and it’s making him nervous. He can’t keep his eyes off her face, and she finds that she can’t either. She can’t look away from his tender, adoring gaze, and couldn’t care less about the movie screen in front of her.

They sit like this until the movie ends, until Jared decides to be brave and take her hand. He holds her small, smooth hand in his large one, and his heart flips over in his chest. The intense heat of his hand surprises her, but it’s comforting and she feels completely safe.

They walk together back to his car, and he opens the door for her. She hesitates, and before she realizes what is happening, his lips are on hers. She feels as if a fire has erupted in her stomach. His hands are wrapped around her small waist, and she can feel the heat radiating from his body. She pulls herself closer, wanting more.

Jared thinks it feels like home.

Jared and Kim walk along First Beach, holding hands and barefooted. He needs to tell her about the pack, he knows, but he can’t think of the right way to do it. He doesn’t want to frighten her; he wants her to trust him. Sam had given him some advice, and he tries his hardest to remember what he said. The longer he waits, the more nervous her becomes. He decides to get it over with.

“Kim?” he asks quietly.

“Yeah?” she answers.

Jared takes a deep breath. “I need to show you something, but I don’t want you to get scared. Just remember I’m not going to hurt you.”

Kim looks nervous, and that doesn’t help his resolve, but he’s already started, and now he has to finish.

He smiles faintly at her as his body starts to shake. She eyes widen in shock as she watches him transform into a werewolf before her very eyes. He watches her, trying to gauge her reaction. He takes a tentative step towards her, and she steps back, away from the huge wolf. He shakes his head, and phases back.

She can’t believe what just happened. Her boyfriend could not have just transformed into a mythical creature, could he? Jared walks slowly towards her, and her breath comes in little gasps. She can’t breathe.

He looks at her in shock when he realizes she’s stopped breathing. He runs towards her and takes her in his warm arms. He holds her tight until her breathing returns to normal. Her heartbeat slows, and he breathes a sigh of relief.

“It’s ok, Kim. It’s ok,” he whispers over and over again, trying to soothe her. He rubs her back comfortingly.

She sniffles, takes a deep breath, and pulls herself away to look him in the eye. She stares at him in disbelief. She’s no longer frightened in his arms. Instead, she’s intently curious. He can see it in her eyes, and he lets out a low chuckle.

“How?” she asks.

“It’s too hard for me to explain. But Billy and Old Quil are great at telling the stories. I’ll bring you tomorrow night, and they’ll explain everything,” he answers, smiling at her.

He kisses her gently on the mouth, and she knows that everything is ok.

She sits around the campfire, her head resting on Jared’s invitingly warm chest, listening to the stories. She’s not the only first timer; Jacob’s friend Bella is there as well. She listens until the end, and Jared offers to drive her home.

They sit in the car out the front of her house, holding each other and kissing tenderly. She lifts her head, looks him in the eyes, and whispers, “I love you, Jared.”

He smiles warmly, and whispers back, “I love you, more than words can say.”
